  • When many people think about The Wizard of Oz they immediately mention MGM's 1939 classic film. But, the history of Oz is much older and richer than that. The history of Oz began at the end of the 19th century, when L.Frank Baum and illustrator, W.W.Denslow, collaborated to produce the children's classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz . Baum, and his successors, went on to write many other tales about the Land of Oz Click here to read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on-line. From Mother Goose in Prose by Frank Baum
Attention forms part of the larger pattern. Rhymes and rhymed jingles and songs very often assist fanciful creations of children's imagination. What is more, they easily assist in assessing heritage parts.
The material is put in the public domain. One story, about Little Bun Rabbit, was left out.
The language is British English. Words and sentences have been modified apart from that as well. - The editor.
Contents
  • Preface
  • Sing a Song of Sixpence
  • The Story of Little Boy Blue
  • The Cat and the Fiddle ...
  • Three Wise Men of Gotham

    Preface
    Reflections on this collection
The preface is rooted in Frank Baum's introduction of 1897, but it is shorter, after guesswork by Baum has been left out. A few mentions at the third and last part of it were added by me. - TB MANY OF the things which are earliest impressed on our minds cling to them later on. And the snatches sung in the nursery are hardly ever forgotten. They may often be remembered, and they can bring back with them myriads of slumbering feelings and half-forgotten images.
One generation is linked to another by the everlasting spirit of song; and ballads of the nursery are readily brought from memory's recesses to amuse our children or our grandchildren.

    28. The Wizard Of Oz
A synopsis of the classic stage musical by L. frank baum, A. Baldwin Sloane and Paul Tiejens.
    http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/musical016.html
THE WIZARD OF OZ Purchase The Cast Album Sheet Music The Movie (DVD) The Movie (VHS) L. FRANK BAUM Music by Originally Staged by JULIAN MITCHELL Based on Baum's novel First produced at the Majestic Theatre on January 21, 1903, with Fred Stone as "Scarecrow" and David Montgomery as "Tin Woodman". T HE WIZARD OF OZ do manage to find the Wizard. Thus Scarecrow gets back his brains, and the Tin Man his heartmuch to the delight of little Dorothy. The musical score was shared by Sloane and Tiejens. Among the best songs contributed by Sloane were "Niccolo's Piccolo" and "The Medley of Nations", while the best of Tiejens included "When You Love, Love, Love" and "I've Waited for you in Loveland". During the long initial Broadway run, and on its subsequent nation-wide tour, various songs by other composers were interpolated from time to time. Two of these became major successesindeed, they are the leading song hits of the entire show: "Sammy" by James O'Dea and Edward Hutchinson, and "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay" by Vincent Bryan and Charles Zimmerman. Mention should be made that when the excellent motion picture adaptation was filmed, starring Judy Garland, and released in 1939, none of the songs from the original stage score were used. Harold Arlen wrote a completely new score that included "Over the Rainbow", which won the Academy Award as the best song to come from the screen that season, and which from then on served as Judy Garland's theme song.

    31. The Death Of Sitting Bull
    L. frank baum's 1890 editorial on the Lakota leader's death, ending with a call to exterminate the surviving Indians.
    http://www.bgsu.edu/departments/acs/1890s/woundedknee/sitbull.html
A Newspaper Account of the Death of Sitting Bull
    December 15, 1890
The text below is excerpted from "Looking Back at Wounded Knee 1890" by Prof. Robert Venables, Cornell University. Published in "Northeast Indian Quarterly"Spring 1990.
    It reads:
The following quotes were printed in "The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer," a weekly newspaper published in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The first was published immediately after Sitting Bull's assassination by Indian Police Dec. 15, 1890.
"Sitting Bull, most renowned Sioux of modern history, is dead.
He was an Indian with a white man's spirit of hatred and revenge for those who had wronged him and his. In his day he saw his son and his tribe gradually driven from their possessions: forced to give up their old hunting grounds and espouse the hard working and uncongenial avocations of the whites. And these, his conquerors, were marked in their dealings with his people by selfishness, falsehood and treachery. What wonder that his wild nature, untamed by years of subjection, should still revolt? What wonder that a fiery rage still burned within his breast and that he should seek every opportunity of obtaining vengeance upon his natural enemies.
"The proud spirit of the original owners of these vast prairies inherited through centuries of fierce and bloody wars for their possession, lingered last in the bosom of Sitting Bull. With his fall the nobility of the Redskin is extinguished, and what few are left are a pack of whining curs who lick the hand that smites them. The Whites, by law of conquest, by justice of civilization, are masters of the American continent, and the best safety of the frontier settlements will be secured by the total annihilation of the few remaining Indians. Why not annihilation? Their glory has fled, their spirit broken, their manhood effaced; better that they die than live the miserable wretches that they are. History would forget these latter despicable beings, and speak, in later ages of the glory of these grand Kings of forest and plain that Cooper loved to heroism.

Welcome to my Kennesaw Faculty Page! I've been in the Department of History and Philosophy at KSU since 1993. My philosophy is, "No one gets out of my class awake." My research interests and scholarly pursuits Bill Arp , an essayist and humorist from Cartersville (where I live), popular in the late nineteenth century. I've also written about evangelist Sam Jones , another Cartersville figure. A few years ago, I got interested in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. You can also reach these pages by visiting David Parker's Page in History Of my professional service activities, I'm especially proud of my association with Dr. George Tindall's America: A Narrative History , one of the most popular college-level US History textbooks; I wrote eight editions of the Instructor's Manual that accompanied it. For a more complete (but boring) list of my academic activities, you may visit my vita . (A vita , in academic circles, is a resume.)

Coat of Baum's Claim: A second-hand coat selected as part of the costume for Professor Marvel in the film vesion of The Wizard of Oz was later discovered to have been owned by Oz author L. Frank Baum. Status: True. Origins: Actor Frank Morgan played five different roles in The Wizard of Oz: In the Emerald City, he was the cabby who drove the Horse-of-a-Different-Color, a guard at the entrance to the Wizard's palace, the doorkeeper at the Wizard's palace, and the Great and Powerful Oz himself; in the Kansas sequences that opened the film, Morgan portrayed the disreputable Professor Marvel. Nearly all of the makeup and costume designs used in The Wizard of Oz went through numerous revisions and changes before and during filming, and Morgan's outfits were no exception. Since the portions of the film in which Morgan appeared (the Emerald City and Kansas sequences) were the last to be filmed, there was even more time to fiddle with the outfits worn by his various characters. Although Morgan did not make his first appearance before the cameras until 14 January 1939, he posed for makeup/costume test shots of all of his characters in
