M UST I, who walk alone,
      come on it still,
      This Puck of plants
The wise would do away with,
      The sunshine slants
      To play with,
Our wee, gold-dusty flower, the yellow clover,
Which once in Parting for a time
      That then seemed long,
Ere time for you was over,
      We sealed our own?
      Do you remember yet,
      O Soul beyond the stars,
      Beyond the uttermost dim bars
      Of space,
Dear Soul, who found earth sweet,
      Remember by love's grace,
In dreamy hushes of the heavenly song,
How suddenly we halted in our climb,
Lingering, reluctant, up that farthest hill,
Stooped for the blossoms closest to our feet,
And gave them as a token
      Each to Each,
      In lieu of speech,
In lieu of words too grievous to be spoken,
Those little, gypsy, wondering blossoms wet
With a strange dew of tears?
      So it began,
      This vagabond, unvalued yellow clover,
To be our tenderest language. All the years
It lent a new zest to the summer hours,
As each of us went scheming to surprise
The other with our homely, laureate flowers.
      Sonnets and odes
      Fringing our daily roads.

Don't You See America The Beautiful Don't You See The day was hotter than words can tell,
So hot the jelly-fish wouldn't jell.
The halibut went all to butter,
And the catfish had only force to utter
The carp he capered and the horn-pout pouted. The sardonic sardine had his sly heart's wish
When the angelfish fought with the paradise fish.
'T was a sight gave the bluefish the blues to see,
The day it went from bad to worse,
Till the pickerel picked the purse-crab's purse. And the crab felt crabedder yet no doubt,
Because the oyster would n't shell out.
The sculpin would sculp, but had n't a model, And the coddlefish begged for something to coddle. But to both the dolphin refused its doll, Till the whale was oblidged to whale them all. - Katharine Lee Bates America The Beautiful beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plaint America! Katharine Lee Bates
(Redirected from Katherine Lee Bates Katharine Lee Bates August 12 March 26 ), is remembered as the author of the words to the anthem America the Beautiful Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts Cape Cod . The daughter of a Congregational pastor, she graduated from Wellesley College in 1880 and for many years was a professor of English literature at Wellesley. The first draft of America the Beautiful was hastily jotted in a notebook during the summer of 1893, which Miss Bates spent teaching in Colorado. Later she remembered,
"One day some of the other teachers and I decided to go on a trip to 14,000-foot Pikes Peak . We hired a prairie wagon. Near the top we had to leave the wagon and go the rest of the way on mules. I was very tired. But when I saw the view, I felt great joy. All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse."
The words to her one famous poem first appeared in print in The Congregationalist , a weekly journal, for Independence Day , July 4, 1895. The poem reached a wider audience when her revised version was printed in the

The following information was taken from the writings of Robert Bidwell, past president of the Falmouth Historical Society. November 1996
By Robert Bidwell While Katharine Lee Bates' childhood years in Falmouth have been described by her biographer Ruth Burgess as the most carefree years of her life, she grew up during a time when there were many losses at sea of Falmouth men, when the Civil War was raging and when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Her mother's widowhood was always evident as her mother never wore colors after her husband's death. It was also a time when she frequently played in the Old Burying Ground off Mill Road with her close friend, Hattie Gifford. Together they would trace the weathered epitaphs and spell out the names of those buried there. All of this must have impressed Katie quite early with an awareness of death, for while still only twelve years old, she carefully wrote out her first will, which was witnessed by her chief beneficiary and executrix...

The following information was taken from a newspaper article (no paper or date given in reference) Contributed by Robert Fitzpatrick America the Beautiful first appeared In print in The Congregationalist , a weekly journal, on July 4, 1895. Over the years, It has become the country's unofficial second national anthem. Miss Bates, long-time professor at Wellesley College, couldn't have known that those four stanzas, hastily scribbled into a notebook on a trip West in 1893, would attain such fame. Atop Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colo., she was electrified by the beauty that was her country, and In writing what later became America the Beautiful , passed on that intense love for her country to all Americans. Miss Bates, who was lecturing at the summer session at Colorado College, joined an expedition to the summit of Pikes Peak In a prairie wagon. She wrote, "It was then and there, as I was looking out over the sea-like expanse..." She rewrote some sections, and the new version was published In The Boston Evening Transcript The only payment Miss Bates ever received for her efforts was a small check from The Congregationalist when America the Beautiful was first published.

KATHARINE LEE BATES OF FALMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS
Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929) was a noted American poetess and the author of the poem for "America the Beautiful." Katharine was born in Falmouth on August 12, 1859. At the time, her father, William Bates, was the minister of our First Congregational Church of Falmouth. Her mother was Cornelia (Lee) Bates. Later, Katharine became an English professor at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. In 1893, Katharine traveled up Pikes Pile. It was the view from that 14,110 foot summit, overlooking Colorado Springs, Colorado, which inspired her to write about spacious skies, amber waves of grain, and purple mountain majesties. See a live view of Pikes Peak and Views of the Region KATHARINE'S FATHER William Bates graduated from Middlebury College in 1837 and Andover Theological Seminary in 1840. He was licensed to preach April 7, 1840 by the Andover Association. For a time he supplied the Congregational church in Dudley, Massachusetts. He was ordained as a Congregational minister and installed as Pastor of the First Congregational Church in Northbridge, Massachusetts on November 5, 1845. On June 16, 1858, William was installed as Pastor of the First Congregational Church of Falmouth. William's health failed not long after moving to Falmouth. He died September 19, 1859, due to a spinal tumor which may have been the result of an earlier injury. He strained his back in 1853 when, in rescuing fellow passengers from a train wreck, he was obliged to rip a seat out of the floor. Rev. William Bates is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Falmouth.

    America The Beautiful
"America The Beautiful" was written by Katharine Lee Bates, Wellesley Class of 1880, in its original form in the summer of 1893 after a trip to Colorado Springs. It first appeared in print in The Congregationalist two years later, and within a few months Silas G. Pratt set it to music. In 1904, after receiving many requests for use in publications and special services, Katharine Lee Bates rewrote it to simplify the text. She made one additional change in the wording of the third stanza a few years later, to give us the version we know today. Over sixty original musical settings, some by distinguished musicians, have been written for the hymn. The music by S.A. Ward became the most widely accepted version and is the one still used today. Amazed by its immediate and lasting success, Katharine Lee Bates wrote: "That the hymn has gained, in these twenty odd years, such a hold as it has upon our people, is clearly due to the fact that Americans are at heart idealists, with a fundamental faith in human brotherhood."
