4-18 July 2004 (Every year)
Yokuzuna (grand champion).
As a spectacle Sumo is amazing. The men are giants and when they collide the forces at work are beyond comprehension. In front of a packed house they attempt to eject each other from the four-and-a-half metre circle or throw each other to the hard clay floor. The backdrop to the action provides constant reminders of the history and reverence of the occasion, from the Gyoji
The best seats in the house are those situated closest to the dohyo (ring) but, be warned, these are extremely difficult to get hold of. However, the large arena provides many seating alternatives, ranging from a simple cushion in the isu-seki (balcony) to a box-seki (similar to a corporate box) in the Kokugikan at the back. Make sure that you order tickets early though, they go on sale up to four months in advance and they sell out quickly.

Matsuo Basho
Nationality: Japanese
Career: Poet
Also known as: Basho Haiku:

Of a pheasant.
Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) was one of the greatest Japanese poets. He elevated haiku to the level of serious poetry in numerous anthologies and travel diaries. The name of Matsuo Basho is associated especially with the celebrated Genroku era (ca. 1680-1730), which saw the flourishing of many of Japan's greatest and most typical literary and artistic personalities. Although Basho was the contemporary of writers like the novelist and poet Ihara Saikaku and the dramatist Chikamatsu Monzaemon, he was far from being an exponent of the new middle-class culture of the city dwellers of that day. Rather, in his poetry and in his attitude toward life he seemed to harken back to a period some 300 years earlier. An innovator in poetry, spiritually and culturally he maintained a great tradition of the past. The haiku, a 17-syllable verse form divided into successive phrases or lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, originated in the linked verse of the 14th century, becoming an independent form in the latter part of the 16th century. Arakida Moritake (1473-1549) was a distinguished renga poet who originated witty and humorous verses he called haikai, which later became synonymous with haiku. Nishiyama Soin (1605-1682), founder of the Danrin school, pursued Arakida's ideals. Basho was a member of this school at first, but breaking with it, he was responsible for elevating the haiku to a serious art, making it the verse form par excellence, which it has remained ever since.

los angeles, ca. 90036 +1.310.384.9396 tel fasonista iChatAV/AIM Boutique website Basho Consulting click to enlarge While developing an online editorial and design publication business plan, I met Erik Wingren at Basho Consulting. He had recently landed in San Francisco as an International Business Consultant and had a need for a more large scale presence online. In exchange for some vertical marketplace consulting I worked with Basho to design their visual image. This included a website, corporate logotype and lockup, and letterhead and business cards. It was important that the online site illustrated the locality of San Francisco in the imagery, so we shot some photographs of the surrounding city landmarks to include in the site design. Basho was also very concerned that the breadth of information about his person and company were easily navigable. We came up with a top level navigation that allowed for any section in the site to be accessed via no more than two mouse clicks. In essence the navigation also served as a site map, but, it was accessible from any page you were on anywhere within the site. These menus could be turned on and off individually so a site viewer could look at the entire sectional reference to the site all at once. We accomplished this using D/HTML and multiple layers of content embedded in each section of the site. The entire site used only three (3) discreet D/HTML pages, each containing the entire sections content and subcontent layers. The site also included a XML newsfeed from moreover.com sourcing technology news headlines.

The Tokyo basho are held at the Kokugikan in Ryogoku. In the last few years, Sumo's popularity has dropped off so that tickets are not usually sold out like they were for several years in a row. Same-day tickets can often be bought for the first ten days or so of the 15-day basho and advance tickets are even easier to get. Unfortunately, you'll have to go to the venue to buy them. If you're really stuck, ticket touts are usually somewhere in the area - they'll find you if you look desperate for a ticket. Towards the end of the 15 days, the tension builds as rikishi (wrestlers) try for their kachikoshi (winning record) or vie for the yusho (championship).

    Basho and Sleeping Butterflies
    You never know what you'll learn at the library... while wandering past some plants. My favorite garden at the Bainbridge Island Library is the Japanese garden ( picture ). Yesterday while walking through it on my way to pick up a book, I saw this sign carved into a rock, a haiku by Basho:
    Wake up, wake up
    sleeping butterfly -
    let us be companions
    I liked how the blooming iris placed near the rock provided a "butterfly". I came home and did some research... It seems that Basho, a poet, was named after the banana plant Basho (bah-shoh), pseudonym of Matsuo Munefusa (1644-94), Japanese poet, considered the finest writer of Japanese haiku during the formative years of the genre. The haiku written on rocks that decorate our island garden were inspired by ones in Japan Scattered along the Nakasendo, at Shinchaya, Shimo-suwa, and Karuizawa, are rocks on which are inscribed poems. Composed by Basho, the poems evoke the local landscape at a particular time of year and are much appreciated by local residents who have erected the stone memorials to the poet. This longer biography provided some description and speculation...

    March 10 ~  Bamboo From Bamboo Haiku Journey
    L e a r n about pines from the p i n e, and a b o u t bamboo fr o m the bamboo." ~ Matsuo Basho Poet Matsuo Basho , ("banana plant", 1644-1694), the son of a low-ranking samurai, created the modern haiku form and is considered to be one of Japan 's greatest literary figures. "Seek not to follow in the footsteps of men of old; seek what they sought," he once said. An adherent follower of Zen Buddhism , Basho's book of his travels The Narrow Road to the Deep North (1689), captured prose and haiku. "Long conversations beside blooming irises/ joys of life on the road," he wrote. The haiku poet or "haijin" described nature and life simply, with lightness, to create profound expressive poetic form. Basho's poetry brought spirituality and richness to haiku unheard of before his time. According to Japanese critic and scholar Makoto Ueda, " ideas on verse writing Basho insisted upon" were sabi (loneliness), shiori (pity), hosomi (slenderness), inspiration , fragrance, reverberation, reflection, and lightness. Creation of art comes from meditation and is a sacred form of expression.
