Bill Barth, a musician and cultural figure of under-rated importance, passed away of a heart attack in his sleep, at his home in Amsterdam, Holland on Wednesday July 15, 2000, at the age of 57. Acting on information developed by researcher Gayle Dean Wardlow and obtained from musician Ishmon Bracey, Bill Barth, John Fahey and Ed Denson located 1930's blues great Skip James in a Tunica, Mississippi hospital in 1964.  After paying James' modest medical bill, the trio drove their rediscovered legend to the Newport Jazz Festival, where his surprise appearance delighted the audience and set in motion the second and more influential musical career of Skip James.   Bill Barth spent the last twenty years of his life in Amsterdam, in self-imposed exile from the music business,  focusing the bulk of his energies on the study of life extension through nutritional supplements.  He continued to play and write, occasionally jamming with well-known artists like Alex Chilton, Taj Mahal and Sam Duffy, as well as local performers, but Bill chose to publish his own work on the internet, a sample of which may be found at the IUMA website.  His last public appearance was in New York City in 1999. Some of Barth's own tales of his days in Memphis appear in "Confessions Of A Psychedelic Carpetbagger" on BLUES WORLD.

John Barth Selected to Chair National Minority Supplier Development Council
- May 17, 2004
Email
Print NEW YORK, May 17 /PRNewswire/ John M. Barth, chairman and chief executive officer of Johnson Controls, Inc. has been named as chairman of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC). The NMSDC works to increase procurement and business opportunities for minority businesses of all sizes. Johnson Controls, a global leader in automotive interiors, automotive batteries and facility management and control, spends more than $1 billion annually with diverse businesses, making it one of only 12 U.S. companies to achieve this milestone. NMSDC recognized the company's minority supplier development initiatives, as well as Mr. Barth's personal commitment and leadership, with its national "Corporation of the Year" award in October 2003. Johnson Controls works with 1,100 diverse suppliers in every state in the union, representing 50 commodity and purchasing areas. The company's annual spending with diverse suppliers represents approximately 15 percent of its controllable purchases. "Johnson Controls and its customers are helping to bring increasing numbers of the nation's fastest growing population segments into the economic mainstream," Mr. Barth said. "I welcome the opportunity to help the NMSDC build awareness of the significant growth opportunities that are created by partnering with minority suppliers."

M ORE than thirty years ago, in August of 1967, an essay by a distinguished thirty-seven-year-old novelist and critic then teaching at the State University of New York at Buffalo appeared in The Atlantic Monthly. The essay was in part an appreciation of the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. It was also an unsparing assessment of a number of popular art forms of the time which, the author slyly noted, had a tendency to "eliminate not only the traditional audience ... but also the most traditional notion of the artist." The essay's final section speculated that the triumph of Borges's work might be seen as evidence of the "used-upness" of certain literary forms, the "exhaustion of certain possibilities." The author was John Barth, and the essay was titled "The Literature of Exhaustion."
A dozen years or so later, in an Atlantic piece titled "The Literature of Replenishment," Barth sought to set the record straight about his earlier "much-misread essay." He had not, he insisted, meant to say "that literature, at least fiction, is kaput.

    Introductions to Literature
    By John Barth
Writers who hang out in academia to help pay the rent are likely to find that their job description comes to include inviting other writers to visit their campus and then hosting them through their visit, introducing them to their lecture audience, and sitting in on the informal sessions with students that typically complete the visitor's tour of duty. Such visitations are, I believe, a generally worthwhile feature of any college writing program: beneficial to the visitor, obviously, who gets paid or otherwise rewarded and may possibly gain a few additional readers; potentially enlightening for the visitor's audience (even those whose curiosity may be more sociological, anthropological, or even clinical than literary); and at least marginally beneficial for the host as well, as I shall attempt to illustrate. intoxicating poetry reading I've ever heard. Indeed, I can summon the cherub-faced Welshman's majestic voice yet, bidding us Yankee undergraduates

John Barth Reads from Unpublished Novel
Novelist John Barth spoke entertainingly from unpublished new work to about 75 people in the Montpelier Room the evening of Nov. 6. His prose was read at breakneck speed in an Eastern Shore accent and punctuated with cardboard signs he held up over his head. "It was a dazzling demonstration of his inventive style, verbal wit and satirically apocalyptic commentary on the end-of-the-century American culture," said Alice L. Birney, American literature manuscript historian in the Manuscript Division. A Maryland native, Mr. Barth is a sailor whose enjoyment of the Chesapeake Bay is often a theme in his work. Introducing him, Prosser Gifford, director of the Office of Scholarly Programs, which sponsored the program, said: "The shallow southeastern Chesapeake is ringed by swamps, bogs, fens and marshes, and these play through John Barth's writing as musical strands through a symphony." He noted Mr. Barth's "exuberant proliferation of the options of every day." The title of the reading was "
