Barney, Natalie Clifford (1876-1922) In addition to being the muse and inspiration of other writers, American expatriate Natalie Clifford Barney, known as the Amazon, was a poet, memoirist and epigrammatist in her own right. Barney was born in Dayton, Ohio, on October 31, 1876; she grew up in Cincinnati and Washington, D.C. Her father, Albert Clifford Barney, inherited a railroad fortune, and when the family lived in Washington, Natalie moved in the highest social and diplomatic circles. The rigid protocol of high society bored her, however, and she was eager to pursue her own adventures in an atmosphere more conducive to sexual, and especially lesbian, expression. As a child, she had visited Europe many times, and when she was twenty-four she settled permanently in Paris. Sponsor Message.

Natalie Clifford Barney
"It seems to me that those who dare to rebel in every age are those who make life possible—it is the rebels who extend the boundary of right, little by little."
—Natalie Barney, 1894
Natalie in Fur Cape, 1897, by Alice Pike Barney. Smithsonian Museum of American Art. With formidable grace, exquisite manners, and a good deal of style, Natalie Clifford Barney shattered the mores of Victorian America, shocked Belle Époque Paris, and was the subject of ceaseless speculation and tittle-tattle from her teens until her death at ninety-six. All this simply because she had the courage to say: "I will live as I choose." Long before rebellion was viewed as a youthful rite of passage, Natalie didn't hesitate to rebel against convention. She dared to be scandalous at a time when scandal too often led to social ostracism. Those of us who enjoy the extended boundaries of right today owe her a profound debt of gratitude. The "Elle's Lettres" Readers' Prize 2003
    Second Prize: "Wild Heart"
"In this nonfiction competition, a send-up of the ways of the wealthy by science journalist and essayist Richard Conniff barely got the best of a rambunctious new biography by literary historian Suzanne Rodriguez. Both books lunched handily on journalist Elisabeth Eaves's account of coming of age as an erotic dancer..." The Elle article quotes letters from two readers of Wild Heart: "What a fascinating woman [Barney was]! Here was a liberal thinker, a lesbian, a great mind, and a wonderfully talented woman who was decades ahead of her time. Given her literary accomplishments, titillating sexual adventures, and the great number of people she strongly affected, Barney's life would be amazing in any day and age." (Nicole Forster, Riverside, MO) "An intelligent, accessible, amusing, informative portrait of an almost completley irredeemable person. I disagree with the author's contention that Barney was open about her lesbianism because she was some kind of crusading revolutionary; I think she was open about it because she was an incredible narcissist so self-absorbed she could barely contemplate a world that didn't revolve around her." (Amy Elrod-Lahti, Albuquerque, NM) Additional Letters from the magazine's readers were posted on Elle's website: Natalie Clifford Barney once wrote, "I want to be at once the bow, the arrow, and the target." Her life story depicts her in each of these roles: Throughout the literary salons of Paris, she became a catalyst between artists; throughout her sexual life, she pierced the hearts of men and women alike. And throughout her life, her passion made her a much sought-after acquaintance, friend, and lover. In

    Natalie Clifford Barney (1876-1972)
Natalie Barney was born in Dayton, Ohio to Albert Clifford Barney and Alice Pike Barney . Both parents came from extraordinary wealth and provided Natalie with every possible advantage. Like most young women in her class in the height of Victorian Imperialism, she was haphazardly educated and encouraged to promote her personal charms in the pursuit of a suitable husband. Extremely independent in her ideas, Natalie questioned such convention and proceeded to live her life in accordance with her beliefs. Her pursuits included French culture, French literature, Greek literature and romancing women. Of these enterprises, her quest for women has been the most notorious. Her endeavers in French and Greek influenced her earliest writings: Quelques portraits-sonnets de femmes, Cinq petits dialogues grecs These works focused on the idealization of Pre-Raphaelite feminine beauty and romantic love between women. Her most acclaimed works, Pensees d'une amazone, Traits et portraits
