    A many splintered thing
Author Julian Barnes sings songs of 'Love, etc.'
The concept of love fascinates author Julian Barnes. "It's the great drama, the great unknowable of most of our lives," he says In this story: Unreliable narratives It's 'only love' RELATED SITES By Todd Leopold CNN (CNN) The sequel is not uncommon in the world of literature. John Updike examined the life of Rabbit Angstrom over the course of four books. Joseph Heller ran into "Catch-22"'s Yossarian again in "Closing Time." Even Scarlett O'Hara made a repeat appearance, albeit one created by another author, in "Scarlett." But, more often, when a book is finished, it's over. The characters are left in whatever position the writer placed them and it's on to the next subject. If you're Julian Barnes, writer of such wide-ranging novels as "Flaubert's Parrot" (1984), "A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters" (1990) and "England, England," (1998), that's quite all right, thank you very much. Certainly, there didn't seem to be much need to continue his 1991 novel, "Talking It Over." The story of Stuart, Gillian, and Oliver three friends who become immersed in a love triangle ended with Gillian, who left the quiet Stuart for the glib Oliver, getting in a violent fight with her new husband as her old one secretly watched from a distance. Oliver drives off in fright, Stuart stands paralyzed with indecision, and Gillian is left in the middle of the street, clutching her baby, pressing a handkerchief to a wound on her face. Three characters in search of love, finding out it's much more difficult than they'd bargained for.

J ulian Barnes is a thin, schoolmasterly man with English teeth and a quiet, prowling English drawl. Relaxed across a small, old couch on the second floor of the house he shares with his wife, literary agent Pat Kavanagh, in a politely Victorian neighborhood near Kentish Town in London, he listens carefully and explains himself with a tutor's gravity and consideration. He is, in fact, the product of three generations of schoolmasters. Behind us, and occupying most of the book-lined room, is the biggest pool table I've ever seen. Barnes' new book is a collection of short stories (his first, if you don't count "A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters," which shares certain properties with a book of short stories, but is, he insists, a novel). Called "Cross Channel," it's about the relationship between the English and the French. What with the advertisements for the EuroStar "chunnel" train posted all over town "London to Central Paris: Direct" and the "mad cow disease" scare on the continent, it's almost as if his publisher had custom-ordered a literary quickie to capitalize on current mass anxieties. But the book is actually a survey of several hundred years of cross-channel history in the form of ten impeccably constructed stories. "Cross Channel" emphasizes the reliable "otherness" of the French vs. beefeating, upright, English science and pragmatism but also a wistful longing for something another country provides, or is supposed to provide.

    37. Wheatdesign | Julian Barnes Thesis

    wheatdesign.com
    music
writing computing life ... design It started off simply enough. I really admired the novels of Julian Barnes and wanted to make them the subject of my master's thesis for an M.A. degree in English. The original idea came to me back in 1995, when my friend James Katowich loaned me a copy of Flaubert's Parrot, certain I'd like it. But due to a misguided (and short lived) move to Philadelphia and a switch from the M.A. program to an M.Ed. program, the thesis got put on the back burner. When you've finished everything but your doctoral disertation, you're said to be All But Disertation (ABD). I don't think there's an equivelent term for being All But Thesis, but perhaps they should invent one. But to make a short introduction shorter, after finishing up my M.Ed., I felt guilty for not ever having finished my M.A., so I finally put my nose to the grind stone, polished it up, and defended it successfully in late April of 2001. For the benefit of people studying Barnes' fiction, I'm posting a PDF version of my thesis here for your pleasure. It's in three parts:
The official-looking frontice-matter. Probably only of benefit to the majority of readers in that it contains the table of contents for the thesis. The first page is blank (don't let that throw you).
