Classroom Issues and Strategies
Problems with teaching Barnes are also opportunities. They include: (1) Her life and complicated childhood, e.g., a suffragist grandmother, a lecherous father; (2) her Bohemian adulthoodshe lived and worked in avant-garde circles in New York and Europe and was also bisexual; (3) her comic wit and anguished vision; and (4) the range of her writing. Because she was a professional writer, with no other income for the most part, she took on a gamut of styles (journalism, plays, poems, stories, burlesques). She often parodies older forms, e.g., Ryder , the bildungsroman, and picaresque novel. If students don't know the original, they miss her great wit. Her biography is still emerging, but tell the story of her life. Let students see her courage, adventurousness, and harsher characteristics, e.g., she traveled in hard-drinking circles. Critics/readers are rediscovering and recovering Barnes, seeing afresh how much she did, who she was, what her circles were, how much it mattered that she was a woman writer, how destructive that ghastly childhood was. Make the class part of the process of rediscovering and recovery, part of the adventure. Show students, too, what she was parodying, what part of literary history she was utilizing. Help students with her dualistic vision, her sense of contradiction and irony. We are born, but born to die. The womb is a tomb. We are corrupt, but we love and desire. We descend in order to ascend.

First Words
How novels begin
Barnes, Djuna, Nightwood "Early in 1880, in spite of a well-founded suspicion as to the advisability of perpetuating that race which has the sanction of the Lord and the disapproval of the people, Hedvig Volkbein, a Viennese woman of great strength and military beauty, lying upon a canopied bed of rich spectacular crimson, the valance stamped with the bifurcated wings of the House of Hapsburg, the feather coverlet an envelope of satin on which, in massive and tarnished gold threads, stood the Volkbein arms - gave birth, at the age of forty-five, to an only child, a son, seven days after her physician predicted that she would be taken."

The play is unusual; even the author observes in her cautionary note that a misreading of The Antiphon is not possible; and she herself described the work as a closet-drama. However, upon its original publication, Dag Hammarskjold translated this highly poetic and theatrical play into Swedish, and it was performed at the Royal Swedish Theater to mostly positive reviews. There have been few notable productions since then, but The Antiphon remains on of Barnes's most compelling poetic achievements, fitting comfortably alongside the great prose masterwork Nightwood PRODUCT CODE: 1892295563 USA/Canada: US$ 12.90 Australia/NZ: A$ 29.30 Other Countries: US$ 20.20 convert to your currency Delivery costs included if your total order exceeds US$50. Profile "There is always more surface to a shattered object than a whole." Djuna Barnes to Emily Holmes Coleman Djuna Barnes, Tortured Genius 1892 - 1982 by L. Margaret Pomeroy
The tones and themes that fill the poetry and fiction Djuna Barnes wrote were set early in her life. Born into a dysfunctional New York family in 1892, her childhood was anything but normal. Barnes was born near Cornwall-on-Hudson, growing up there and on a Long Island farm. Her father was Wald Barnes (having chosen his mother’s name over his father’s), an extreme nonconformist who did not work at a real job until after his mother's death when he was in his fifties. Djuna’s mother was Elizabeth Chappell, an English wife who obediently endured her husband’s views, mistresses, and sexual molestation of their daughter. Zadel Turner Barnes , Djuna’s grandmother, also lived in the home, though she would remarry later and live abroad, but her influence on her granddaughter remained strong. In fact letters that she wrote to Djuna were pornographic, implying sexual activity between them, and leaving scholars to wonder if her grandmother, as well as her father, had an incestuous relationship with young Djuna. Also in Djuna’s childhood home were her two younger brothers as well as the mistress of the day and any children she might have had. Barnes’ novel
