Readers of Iain M. Banks's Culture novels might have developed some strange notion that the Culture is more or less invulnerable, that its awesome size, its technological sophistication, its liberal idealism might secure it against any threat. Excession , Banks's first Culture novel for six years, puts the Culture resoundingly in its place. Not only has it barely left its own galaxy, it doesn't even know how to leave its own universe - and something else does: the excession of the title and the Culture's very own Outside Context Problem. An excession, broadly, is anything which threatens the Culture's existence and, in this case, takes the form of a small black body sphere which has parked itself in a reasonably remote corner of the galaxy and done absolutely nothing. Its accidental discovery, however, provokes a complex chain of events involving different factions within the Culture and a minor but thorny problem of some uncivilised but quite clever jellyfish called the Affronters. Drawn into this is Genar-Hofoen, a Culture diplomat whose love affair with Contact agent Dajeil forty years earlier has left them both emotionally devastated. Excession presents some intriguing developments of the Culture cosmos: minds getting religion, entire civilisations "subliming" to a higher state of existence, and a noisy endorsement of Andrei Linde's idea that "our" big bang was just one of many and that the universe is incalculably larger than we think it is. Banks injects the slightly tired device of converging plots with some new vigour and subtlety, using it to place more or less equal weight on the emotional lives of two people on the one hand and the vast backdrop against which their story is told on the other - the universe is

Look to Windward
Iain M. Banks
Look to Windward is the latest of Iain Bank's science fiction novels, and it lives up to everything I have come to expect from this highly talented author. Previous Culture novels have included The Player of Games (a personal favourite) and Excession, he is also critically acclaimed for his non science fiction work such as The Wasp Factory and The Crow Road. Set in a distant galactic future where the dominant civilisation is the Culture, humans have overcome even death and live out near Utopic lives, basic life needs having been met millennia before. The culture is benevolently "ruled" by near godlike artificial Intelligences, which reside in spaceships or control whole worlds. In Look to Windward a widowed survivor of a civil war is sent to the Culture world of Masaq, apparently to persuade a composer to return to his home world from his self-imposed exile and help heal his people. But the mission, as the composer Ziller suspects, is not all it seems to be.

Pocket Books. 483p. c2000. 0-7434-2192-2. $6.99. A The setting is in the far future on an artificial satellite world called Masaq' Orbital, home to about 50 billion members of the Culture. This story takes place some 800 years after the particularly nasty Idiran war, which took out several planets, killing all inhabitants. Composer Ziller, who lives on Masaq', is informed that an emissary, Major Quilan, from Chel will arrive soon. Everyone thinks Quilan is coming to bring the extremely talented composer home to Chel, while Ziller thinks Quilan is coming to kill him; in fact, Quilan is a plant with deep-seeded instructions to blow up the entire orbital as retribution for the souls lost during the war. It seems the Chel believe that these lost souls will only reach heaven by taking an equal number of Culture casualties. With sentences like, "The sky above you brightened first, then the rising star seemed to coalesce out of the infrared, a shimmering vermilion specter emerging out of the haze line and then sliding along the horizon, shining dimly through the Plate wails and the distant abundances of air and only gradually gaining height, though, once it had properly begun, the daylight lasted longer than on a globe," on the same page with, "She nodded vigorously, 'Absofu#!ing-lutely!;" this is quite a piece of fiction. I will be the first to admit that the characters are highly unusual and "alien." But I spent most of the book waiting to get the gist. When I got to the last sentence. "Life never ceases to surprise," I knew I wouldn't. Although toted as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, YA readership will be limited to those who like their SF way out there. Sherry S. THE CULTURE AS AN IDEAL SOCIETY
Thomas Gramstad Laissez Faire City Times Vol 4, No 23, June 5, 2000 The State of the Art
In his science fiction novels, British author Iain M. Banks projects a future human society that seems to embody all the essential virtues of Objectivist social theory, while at the same time suggesting how two widespread and major shortcomings of current Objectivist thought may be corrected. The Culture is a machine-symbiotic human society. There are artificial intelligences and other mechanical persons enjoying individual rights. Biological persons (humans) are enhanced genetically and biotechnologically, they have a lot of extra glands and add-ons that expand volitional control of body functions and mind states. This includes the ability to change sex back and forth by will, or to have both sexes (intersexuality) or no sex. The Culture is an abundant society, with no scarcity economy. One Culture adage is, Money is a sign of poverty , meaning that money only has a function in a scarcity economy, and therefore its existence betrays a pre-abundant (poor) society. The Culture is a stateless society, continually expanding its size and accumulated knowledge. Erik Vasaasen has described 'The Culture' as

a critical list with discussions
Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by Iain M. Banks
This is a brief discussion of Iain M. Banks and, of course, of some books by Iain M. Banks.
This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Banks; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the' title so you know what's what.)
I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Banks tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Banks worthy; in sum, to help you rank Banks (and the works by Banks listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.

Ambiguous Reparations: Iain M. Banks' Look to Windward
Reviewed by John Aegard
S cotland's Iain Menzies Banks is a prolific fellow with a literary double life. He's produced at least one book every year since The Wasp Factory came out in 1984, alternating between "mainstream" fiction (as just plain Iain Banks) and SF (as Iain M. Banks). His latest SF effort, Look To Windward takes us back to the Culture, the space opera utopia introduced over a decade ago in Consider Phlebas and expanded with three sequels since. The Culture is a cozy interstellar society in which everything is plentiful, no one is exploited, and very little is forbidden or even impossible. All of the details of its day-to-day operation are handled by benevolent hyperspace AIs called Minds, leaving its inhabitants free to pursue whatever pleasures they crave. The whimsical hedonism of the Culture is rather convincing quite like Banks has taken the Western world and divorced it even more completely from the indignities of physical want. And remarkably, he's refrained from knocking this obvious target from its sheltered doldrums. Through the eight hundred years covered so far in his novels, the Culture has remained mostly unchanged. This is Banks' primary point of divergence from modern space-opera virtuosos such as Dan Simmons, Vernor Vinge, or Peter Hamilton. The Culture does not exist merely so that it can be violently transformed in the course of a novel. Even Consider Phlebas' cataclysmic Idiran War was never posed as a Culture-changing event. The Minds of that novel had calculated the exact circumstances of their victory well in advance, and, despite billions of tragedies, the Culture as a whole sailed on unaffected.

Home Bookshop Science Fiction Iain M Banks is one of the UK's best science fiction writers. Most of his books are set in an impressively-realised Utopian future, known as the Culture. If you are interested in buying any of the following books, please click on their covers to link to amazon.co.uk Consider Phlebas (1988) The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Within the cosmic conflict, there was an individual crusade: deep within a fabled labyrinth lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it. The first of the Culture novels, 'Consider Phlebas' created a very plausible and fascinating future world. While the story isn't as great as some of Banks's later works, it's still an excellent novel. The Player of Games (1989) Bored with success, Gurgel - The Player of Games - travels to the Empire of Azad, cruel and incredibly wealthy, to try their fabulous game. This is a game so complex, so like life itself, that the winner becomes emperor. This is probably my favourite of the Culture series that I've read; strong characters and some extremely well realised cultural differences make for an excellent read.

Danks.
