Excession - Iain M Banks Banks is, without a doubt, one of the most awe-inspiring writers to have emerged on to the literary scene in the last 20 years. Adroitly straggling the fence between two great genres, he alternates between publishing delightfully odd fiction as Iain Banks and frighteningly grand science fiction as Iain M Banks. Excession is another romp into the world of his future civilisation, the Culture. The Culture is a pan-galactic society overseen by the benign paternal efforts of vast artificial intelligences called Minds. Guardianship by these Minds has ensured that humankind has rocketed beyond any problems of scarcity and disease and emerged into a hedonistic age where they can attain any mood they wish via the use of internal ‘drug glands’, never have to work, can change appearance or gender and enjoy an average lifespan of 400 years. This perfect, if rather uneventful, existence is offset by the antics of some rather less ‘enlightened’ species in the galaxy such as the Affront. This race of tentacledÜber-Klingons are highly aggressive party animals who view the Culture as a bunch of spineless do-gooders who they’d love to get an advantage over given half a chance. Into this background appears an ‘Out of Context’ problem, the Excession. An artefact billions of years old and of immeasurable power. It was last seen in a little used corner of space when a star mysteriously vanished, and now it has returned setting off alarm bells amongst the great ship Minds as well as thoughts of avarice from the Affront. The Culture’s aim is to try and make contact with this black body sphere, the Affront simply want to rape any technological knowledge they can to give them a power advantage in the galaxy.

Iain (M) Banks One of the UK's most wildly imaginative authors talks to Scrawl about sex, space and smugness...
Iain Menzies Banks is Scottish. He was born and raised in and around Dunfermline, Fife, educated at Sterling University. Along with fellow Scot, Irvin Welsh, Banks has become known as one of the most startling of modern British writers. Scotland seems to be producing more than its fair share of literary talent and recently that talent has began to make a notable impact on British SF, with Iain M Banks and Ken MacLeod pushing the vanguard. Is there something north of the border responsible for this top-heavy distribution of word-wielding talents? ‘I think it’s mainly just coincidence,’ Iain conceded, ‘But it is true that a good proportion of good British writers are Scottish... A cultural divide does exist and most English people don't understand the breadth of it. Writers in that situation develop a different voice and are more determined to express it. ‘I think Alasdair Gray’s Lanark is a landmark - the best Scottish novel this century! Scotland has been producing more than its fair share, in terms of literature, ever since - we’re just ten per cent of the UK, but we've got more than ten per cent of the best writers...’

    Going Through the Motions :
"The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul" by Douglas Adams
The holistic detective Dirk Gently returns when confronted with the strange case of an exploding check-in counter at Heathrow airport. He and an American journalist will pursue the case as it encompasses a mysterious disappearance, a rest-home and Norse mythology. "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" was a pleasant surprise after the steady deterioration in Adam's work. It was entertaining, intriguingly convoluted and had a clever and ludicrous plot that slowly fell out into perfect sense. All in all it was pretty snappy. Its sequel fumbles badly and reads a lot like some-one trying to imitate "Dirk Gentlys". Perhaps Adams (as has been reported for some of his other books) had to be locked in a hotel room to finish it. The delicious unveiling of the plot in "Gently's" is replaced by an incoherent and arbitrary mess. Some of the humour is still worthwhile but overall, it can't be recommended. T welve years and fourteen books since the publication of his debut novel The Wasp Factory, Iain Banks has become one of Britain's most prominent and prolific writers. Whether writing mainstream novels as plain "Iain Banks" or science fiction under his ubiquitous "Iain M. Banks" nom-de-plume, Banks has mastered the tricky art of attracting both bestseller status and critical acclaim. Now 42, Banks' most recent books, the sci-fi epic Excession and the religious cult thriller Whit

Sharon Jackson (then editor of Trinity's Alternate magazine) and I interviewed Iain M. Banks in February 1997 in the lobby of the Royal Dublin Hotel at Trincon 2, TCD's science fiction convention. A very slightly different version of this interview was published in Alternate magazine.
I am quite a big fan of Banks's work; I've read almost everything he's written, whether as Iain Banks or Iain M. Banks, and consider him one of the best novelists currently writing in English.
For the pedantic among you: I refer to him as Iain M . Banks here because we were at a science fiction convention.
Sharon Jackson: So, to start with a classic question: what are you working on at the moment? Iain M. Banks: Damn, if you'd asked me that on Friday evening, I could've said "tomorrow's hangover". But in fact, the next book is pretty well finished, the only thing that remains to be done is copy editing. It's mainstream, short and bitter. Back to grim again. I'm veering wildly across the road of literature, from the cosy sentimentality of The Crow Road and Whit to the deeply unpleasant, gratuitously nasty stuff like

Cultured futurist Iain M. Banks creates an ornate utopia
By Nick Gevers ain Banks is one of Britain's most versatile and ambitious novelists, the recipient of an enviable combination of popular and critical acclaim. A restless experimenter, at home in a host of genres which he effortlessly hybridizes, he has, as Iain M. Banks, produced a stream of major SF novels. Pyrotechnic, action-filled, satiric, outlandish, deep and frivolous all at once, these bravura space operas and planetary romances juggle galactic scale, political argument and personal perspective with a revelatory energy rarely matched in speculative fiction. Banks' analyses are complex and at times heart-rending; the Culture's Contact Section and its Special Circumstances operatives, mirroring the CIA in disconcerting ways, are very far from infallible. Their adventures feature in Consider Phlebas The Player of Games The State of the Art Use of Weapons Excession Inversions (1998) and Look to Windward (2000). Two novels not concerning the Culture
