Baldwin, James Baldwin, James, , American author, b. New York City. He spent an impoverished boyhood in Harlem and at 14 became a preacher in the Fireside Pentecostal Church. His first two novels, Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953), reflecting his experience as a young preacher, and Giovanni's Room (1956), which dealt with his homosexuality, were written while he lived in Paris. He returned to the United States in 1957 and participated in the civil-rights movement, later returning to France where he lived for the remainder of his life. Another Country (1962), a bitter novel about sexual relations and racial tension, received critical acclaim, as did the publication of the perceptive essays in The Fire Next Time (1963). His eloquence and unsparing honesty made Baldwin one of the most influential authors of his time. Other works include the play Blues for Mr. Charlie (1964); a volume of short stories, Going to Meet the Man If Beale Street Could Talk (1974), the story of a young black couple victimized by the judicial system; and Just Above My Head (1979). Collections of essays include

Baldwin, James Arthur (1924-1987)
page: James Baldwin, a pioneering figure in twentieth-century literature, wrote sustained and articulate challenges to American racism and mandatory heterosexuality. The circumstances of Baldwin's birth were unremarkable: He was born on August 2, 1924, at Harlem Hospital in New York City to a poor, unmarried, twenty-year-old woman named Emma Berdis Jones. But his death sixty-three years later on December 1, 1987, at his home in southern France was an event reported on the front pages of newspapers around the world. Indeed, his journey from a difficult childhood in Harlem to his eventual status as a legendary artist with a large and loyal international audience constitutes one of the most compelling American life-stories of the twentieth century. James Baldwin's Foreward
STAGOLEE

I'd kept my notes concerning Bobby Seale and Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver, so many years ago. It was, actually, only a little over ten years ago, but it seems much longer than that. Everyone was so young-except Eldridge, there was always something of a deacon about that one. Huey was the dedicated poet, and strategist. Bobby was the firebrand.
I first met Huey in San Francisco, but don't remember meeting either Bobby or Eldridge then. My first recollection of Eldridge is in Hollywood, at the Beverly Hills Hotel; he was part of the Black Panther escort for Betty Shabazz. As for Bobby Seale, I first met him, if memory serves, with Marlon Brando, in Marlon's hotel suite, in Atlanta, the day of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s funeral. He had been sleeping, was still groggy-was as tense and quiet as the air becomes when a storm is about to break. This was certainly due, in part, to the climate of that momentous day, but it was also due to a kind of intelligence of anguish living behind Bobby's smoky eyes.
The south was simply the hell which our parents had survived, and fled. Harlem was our rat and roach infested haven;

    James Baldwin
    James Baldwin. His last essay: Whose Harlem Is This, Anyway?
    http://www.tstonramp.com/~jpw/

    Short essay uses Harlem as a starting point for an examination of community, identity, and race relations. Last page has a couple of good links; most, unfortunately, are broken. John Stevenson. James Baldwin: An Appreciation.
    http://www.bookwire.com/bbr/interviews/baldwin.html

    Excellent critical essay from the Boston Book Review that carefully examines some of the major themes Baldwin struggled with: race, identity, politics, love, power. Brian W. Fairbanks. James Baldwin's Notes of a Native Son: On Loving and Leaving America.
    http://www.angelfire.com/oh2/writer/NativeSon.html

    Unusual perspective on Baldwin's writing through the perspectives of nationalism and expatriation. Many may not ultimately agree with the author's conclusion that "the America of Crevecoeur, Franklin, and Jefferson is the America of James Baldwin, as well," but the essay certainly makes for interesting reading.
