Electronic scholarly publishing Electronic scholarly publishing is an online publishing project making available "scientific and other scholarly materials" via its Web site, with a specific emphasis on the history of science, genetics and computational biology. A range of materials are available via this site, including digitised books and journal articles. Most texts are in Adobe PDF format and require the Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view them, although some texts are available in HTML format. As well as general articles on genetics and the history of genome research, there is a substantial selection of primary works, including texts by Aristotle, Galen, Francis Bacon, Malthus and Darwin. A timeline is also available which outlines the major developments in genetics and places them in the context of general historical events. The Project is sponsored by the US Department of Energy. The site makes use of HTML frames. Genomics Genetics Computational Biology Malthus, T.R. (Thomas Robert) 1766-1834

Francis Bacon (1909-1992), the eminent British painter known for his large, colorful, and grotesque paintings of the human body, was very controlling of what was written about his work during his lifetime; this book marks the first time that each painting is individually discussed in print. Included in the book are essays that provide great insight into Bacon's life and personality. Especially revealing is an essay by Michael Peppiatt, Bacon's close friend and biographer (he wrote Francis Bacon: Anatomy of an Enigma). Bacon lived a life of heavy drinking, gambling, and socializing, and Peppiatt discusses this lifestyle in relation to the work: "Bacon himself pretended he painted particularly well with a hangover. 'My mind simply crackles with electricity after one of those evenings.'" Along with beautiful reproductions of the paintings are some photographs of Bacon's studio, which is astounding in its filth. The floor is littered with various detritus; brushes and paint tubes are everywhere. Bacon's intensity is as evident in these studio shots as in the paintings with contorted figures and grimacing, bruise-colored faces. You can practically watch the human body decay in front of your eyes.

THE FRANCIS BACON STUDIO AT THE HUGH LANE GALLERY, DUBLIN
"I feel at home here in this chaos because chaos suggests images to me. And in any case I just love living in chaos."
Francis Bacon on 7 Reece Mews Francis Bacon (1909-1992) was born in Dublin and is celebrated as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. 7 Reece Mews in South Kensington, London was the artist's home and legendary working space for the last thirty years of his life and it was here that Bacon produced some of his best work. In 1998, John Edwards, Bacon's sole heir, generously donated the entire contents of Francis Bacon's studio at 7 Reece Mews to the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. This remarkable donation is the most important received by the Gallery since it was established by Sir Hugh Lane in 1908. The Hugh Lane has now reconstructed the studio in Dublin in new spaces designed by leading British architect David Chipperfield. The studio is supported by an Audio Visual room, an Exhibition Gallery and a Micro Gallery is the definitive archive of one of the finest figurative artists ever and one of the greatest European painters of the twentieth century. The database of over 7000 items is the most detailed and technically advanced archive of any artist's studio in the world.
