Francis Bacon (Philosoph)
aus Wikipedia, der freien Enzyklopädie Francis Bacon 22. Januar 9.

Francis Bacon
About three hours after we had despatched our answer, there came toward us a person (as it seemed) of a place. He had on him a gown with wide sleeves, of a kind of water chamolet, of an excellent azure color, far more glossy than ours; his under-apparel was green, and so was his hat, being in the form of a turban, daintily made, and not so huge as the Turkish turbans; and the locks of his hair came down below the brims of it. A reverend man was he to behold. He came in a boat, gilt in some part of it, with four persons more only in that boat; and was followed by another boat, wherein were some twenty. When he was come within a flight-shot of our ship, signs were made to us that we should send forth some to meet him upon the water, which we presently did in our ship-boat, sending the principal man amongst us save one, and four of our number with him. When we were come within six yards of their boat, they called to us to stay, and not to approach farther, which we did. So he returned; and awhile after came the notary to us aboard our ship, holding in his hand a fruit of that country, like an orange, but of color between orange-tawny and scarlet, which cast a most excellent odor. He used it (as it seemed) for a preservative against infection. He gave us our oath, "By the name of Jesus, and His merits," and after told us that the next day, by six of the clock in the morning, we should be sent to, and brought to the strangers' house (so he called it), where we should be accommodated of things, both for our whole and for our sick. So he left us; and when we offered him some pistolets, he smiling, said, "He must not be twice paid for one labor:" meaning (as I take it) that he had salary sufficient of the State for his service. For (as I after learned) they call an officer that taketh rewards twice paid.

The World hath been much abused by the Opinion of Making of Gold : The Worke it selfe I judge to be possible; But the Meanes (hitherto propounded) to effect it, are, in the Practice, full of Errour and Imposture; And in the Theory, full of unsound Imaginations. For to say, that Nature hath an Intention to make all Metals Gold ; and that, if she were delivered from Impedients, shee would performe her owne Worke; And that, if the Crudities, Impurities, and Leprosities of Metals were cured, they would become Gold ; And that a little Quantity of the medicine , in the Worke of Projection ,will turne a Sea of the baser Metall into Gold , by Multiplying : All these are but dreams: And so are many other Grounds of Alchymy . THE NEW ORGANON
OR TRUE DIRECTIONS CONCERNING THE INTERPRETATION OF NATURE Francis Bacon [Note on the Text] AUTHOR'S PREFACE Anticipation of the Mind , the other Interpretation of Nature APHORISMS [BOOK ONE] I Man, being the servant and interpreter of Nature, can do and understand so much and so much only as he has observed in fact or in thought of the course of nature. Beyond this he neither knows anything nor can do anything. II Neither the naked hand nor the understanding left to itself can effect much. It is by instruments and helps that the work is done, which are as much wanted for the understanding as for the hand. And as the instruments of the hand either give motion or guide it, so the instruments of the mind supply either suggestions for the understanding or cautions. III Human knowledge and human power meet in one; for where the cause is not known the effect cannot be produced. Nature to be commanded must be obeyed; and that which in contemplation is as the cause is in operation as the rule. IV Toward the effecting of works, all that man can do is to put together or put asunder natural bodies. The rest is done by nature working within.

Bacon, Francis (1561-1626)

English philosopher, and later Lord Chancellor of England, who was displeased with the state of natural philosophy. He felt that knowledge is not abstract reason, but the application of facts. This drive towards applications was novel in physics. Like Descartes , Bacon was skeptical of both reason and observation. He grouped the ways in which human reason could be deceived into Idylls of the Cave (a person's views are influenced by those around him), Idylls of the Marketplace (erroneous arguments can appear convincing), and Idylls of the Theater (theories about the world can be erroneous). Bacon believed that the senses can't be trusted, but neither can reason be relied upon. He maintained that nature could only be understood using instruments to actively "torture" it (vita activa) and reveal its secrets. He believed that understanding could not start from first principles (which only lead further astray), but must be obtained by performing a series of experiments and making generalizations by induction. This approach, published in

Bacon nahm seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit wieder auf und beendete sein Werk History of Henry VII The Advancement of Learning, die dann den Titel trug: Werke The Advancement of Learning Novum Organum oder Indications Respecting the Interpretation of Nature Ampliative Inference

Shakespeare Authorship
Francis Bacon "There be some whose lives are as if they perpetually played a part upon a stage, disguised to all others,
open only to themselves."
Francis Bacon from The Essay of Friendship The clearest indication of Bacon using another name for his work is in Tobie Matthew's letter to Bacon , in 1623, written from France: "The most prodigious wit, that ever I knew of my nation, and of this side of the sea, is of your Lordship's name, though he be known by another. In 1603, Bacon wrote to a friend of his, the poet, John Davies , who had gone north to meet the King: "So desiring you to be good to concealed poets, I continue, yours very assured, Fr. Bacon." "The wisdom displayed in Shakespeare was equal in profoundness to the great Lord Bacon's Novum Organum William Hazlitt
"Lord Bacon was the greatest genius that England, or perhaps any country, ever produced."
Alexander Pope , 1741 "In Shakespeare's plays we have Thought, History, Exposition, Philosophy, all within the round of the poet. It is as if into a mind poetical in form there had been poured all the matter which existed in the mind of his contemporary Bacon. The only difference between him and Bacon sometimes is that Bacon writes an Essay and calls it his own, while Shakespeare writes a similar essay and puts it into the mouth of a Ulysses or a Polonius." orthodox Professor David Mason "...The subjects which most engrossed the mind of Bacon, the opinions which he most strongly expressed, the ideas which he desired especially to inculcate, are those which are found chiefly pervading the plays. Those things which are explained in the prose works of Bacon are to be found repeated, or alluded to, or forming the basis of beautiful metaphors and similes, in the Plays. And the vocabulary of Bacon and Shakespeare is to a suprising degree the same."

Name:
Francis Bacon Dates:
Born: January 22, 1561
Died: April 9, 1626 Biography:
Francis Bacon was a British philosopher whose work was vital to the development of the British empiricist tradition, influencing Locke, Hume, Mill and Russell. Bacon's thinking was very practical and utilitarian in nature, although he seems to have been pessimistic as to whether or not human progress was really possible. At least on the surface, Bacon professed allegiance to Christianity and belief in Christian doctrines, but it is uncertain as to whether or not that was really his true position. Regardless, in his efforts to dethrone scholasticism, he argued for a complete separation of reason and revelation (as part of a general separation of reason from personal interest, social conventions, human passion, etc.). Bacon believed that this separation would facilitate the development of science, and he was right. But, once widely adopted, it also lead to the eventual separation of church and state, religion and morality, and more. Thus, Bacon's philosophical work was an important foundation for modern, rationalistic, skeptical atheism.
