The activist's daughter by Ellyn Bache Review from Kirkus Reviews, 03/01/1997: "...Bache's warm humor and her zest for period detail make for an engrossing portrait of an era." Review from Lambda Book Report, May 1997: "Unfortunately, Beryl's world is no terribly interesting....While it is clear that Beryl is a young woman on a journey of self-exploration and understanding, Bache doesn't allow her enough intelligence to see the larger picture." Cris Newport Review: Review: Synopsis: This novel about a civil rights activist and her rebellious daughter takes place in 1963.

Ellyn Bache Imperfect I didn't want to be imperfect. Who does? This was Washington, D.C., 1958. Humid as a rain forest and none of the houses air-conditioned. A wicked, steamy place. Our mothers stayed home, and our fathers worked for the government, and on steamy summer nights we found ourselves cooped up in stuffy living rooms with all the fans blowing, impaled by the hot beam of our parents' attention. The only escape was the playground on Riggs Road, where twice a week they showed movies on an outdoor screen. We were too old to care about the films, but we went and flirted with the boys back by the fence.
In those days the girl was supposed to be younger than the boys she dated, but Chip Gordon was a year behind me in school, only fifteen. He was blond, tawny-skinned, a brainy kid with a wild look in his eye. I liked his voice, husky rather than booming, throaty, as if it cost him something to speak. We eyed each other, but that was all.
Then one night we wandered off together to a remote section of the playground where we necked for more than an hour. It wasn't a date, just an act spawned by the heat, unprecedented and never to be repeated. It ended with his fifteen-year-old hand cupped over my sixteen-year-old breast, and me hyperventilating until I almost fainted.
His finger lingered on a place about two inches above my left nipple, playing with a small raised area of skin.

Title: Culture Clash Author: Ellyn Bache Publisher: Banks Channel Books CULTURE CLASH Second Edition Author: Ellyn Bache Publisher: Banks Channel Books First printing: 1st edition, 1982 2nd edition, 1990 Available in: Quality paper, 131 pages. $11.95 (ISBN 0-9635967-0-5)) Summary When novelist Recommended by N. Gail Magee Author Biography Ellyn Bache is the author of the novels Festival in the Fire Season and Safe Passage (which was made into a film starring Susan Sarandon and Sam Shepard), and of the short story collection, The Value of Kindness , which won the Willa Cather Fiction Prize. She lives in North Carolina with her family. Topics to Consider One of the first things that mystifies the author is realizing that the refugees have fled their country without clothing or survival items, but only with snapshots of their families and tapes of Vietnamese music. What would you make of this? Would you come up with the same theories that the Bache family did? Many sponsorships broke down within the first year, because of the same conflicts the Bache family had with Kim and Quang. Are there ways the misunderstandings could have been prevented or at least made less traumatic to each side? How would you set up such a program so that the transition would be easier? The Baches were just one family, with three small children. Many sponsors were churches with large congregations. Each type of sponsorship has its strengths and weaknesses. Is one better than the other? Why?

Short selection from the story.

My cousin Faye had died and none of the out-of-town relatives were going to the funeral. "It would be different if Aunt Millie were still alive," my mother said on the phone, "but it's expensive and Chicago's miserable in August. Most of the family is gone. It's not as if anybody will care." "Howard will care." "Oh, Howard." He and Faye had married late, after they both agreed to sterilization. "He won't even notice." Ridiculous, I thought. I bit back the words. Mother was crankier than ever these days, and I was practicing tolerance. "Well, I'm going," I told her. "You should, too. We owe her." "For what?" Through the receiver, I could hear her drumming her long fingernails on the table. "For being a relative. For dying before we did. For all those times she babysat when I was a kid." Mother grunted. "I'll get your plane ticket," I said. "I have enough frequent flyer miles for both of us." Mother hated to fly. When I was young we always drove to Chicago, a hot, lengthy journey with her at the wheel, hair loose in the scalding wind, in an angry swirl that matched her mood. Uncle Harry was Dad's cousin, not hers, and Mother claimed she'd rather go to the ocean.

Who were your first Literary inspirations? Ellyn: I started writing in an effort to stay sane. My two oldest children were toddlers; we were living in a small town where I knew no one, and I was completely housebound because we had sold our second car so my husband, Terry, could go into business. My first published pieces were real estate features in the D.C. papers about how to finish vacation cabins like the ones Terry was building. Terry gave me a lot of the information, and I could write when the children were asleep. Soon I began to write short stories. I had a M.A. in English, but my model wasn't anything literary. It was the commercial women's magazine story, which I'd been reading since my mother subscribed to Redbook when I was eight. I was lucky to be selling nonfiction, because it took me six years before McCall's bought my first short story. If I hadn't been doing the articles and getting bylines, I would have been awfully discouraged."

stars Susan Sarendon as Mag and Sam Shepard as Patrick. At four-thirty on Sunday morning Mag came up from sleep with her heart thumping and sweat pouring from her, the way she'd awakened years ago when her son Izzy was out delivering newspapers and she found him two blocks away lying on the street with a broken ankle. She sat up in bed, wide awake, sick to her stomach. She hated motherly premonitions; she thought she was through with them. Except for Simon, the seven boys were grown . . . .

Instead, she met Terry Bache - a conservative Catholic Marine raised on a farm and just back from Vietnam, while she was from a liberal, urban, Jewish family. They married and began a 30-year "discussion" of their differences while having the first of their four children. Instead of teaching, Ellyn was soon a full-time mom. Wanting to stay at home but yearning for a professional life, Ellyn began freelancing for the DC newspapers and teaching herself to write fiction. After six years of rejections, her first short story appeared in McCall's . Her nonfiction book, Culture Clash , was also published, about her family's experience sponsoring a Vietnamese refugee family. When her youngest son went to school, Ellyn started her first novel

Abstract
Ellyn Bache, writer of Wilmington, N.C., grew up in Washington, D.C., and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the mid-1960s. She has published non-fiction under the pen name Ellen Matthews, and, with her husband, young adult fiction under the pen name E. M. J. Benjamin. Much of Bache's writing is set in southern locales and deals with race relations and southern culture in general. Papers consist chiefly of writings, including drafts of novels, short stories, and screenplays; journal and newspaper articles; and a musical play. Clippings are of fiction and non-fiction works, mid 1970s-late 1980s. There are also subject files concerning character development and historical research conducted while writing and revising
