Snider Image from www.steveaylett.com British writer Steve Aylett has caught the attention of the science fiction community with his over-the-top, almost painfully satirical style. Unlike many authors who insist on churning out bloated, bug-crushing tomes, Aylett delivers slim books that pack the punch of battlefield nukes. His latest novel Atom (see our review ) was published in America in November 2000. Books by Steve Aylett scifi dimensions What was the defining moment in your life when you knew you were going to be a writer?
Steve Aylett: I can’t remember a specific moment - I know when I was about five years old I made little illustrated books based on monster movies. I did a Jason and the Argonauts book in which the heroes would arrive at an island, see a monster, Jason would say ‘Quick - get back to the ship’ - and they’d sail away. This happened at a long series of islands, with different monsters. They never actually fought anyone. I like to think my writing skills have developed a little bit since then. The real motive later on was to write the kinds of books I wanted to read. I’d go into bookshops looking for something with alot of juice and ideas, to counter the general sterility of the time. I couldn’t find anything, so I had to write it myself. I still write the sort of books I’d like to read.

No duplication without express written permission. December 2000 Book Review: Atom by Steve Aylett Four Walls Eight Windows, November 2000 by Amy Harlib British author of "slipstream," avant-garde SF, Steve Aylett, with 5 previous books under his belt, has a reputation for outrageousness that precedes him. Atom , his most recent novel, definitely lives up to expectations. The protagonist, Mr. Taffy Atom, is a private detective of an unconventional and eccentric sort with a sidekick that's even weirder: Jed Helms, who has a voraciously vicious human personality somehow grafted onto a souped-up brain in the body of a giant goldfish! The near-future setting, as in Aylett's novel Slaughtermatic , is the city of "Beerlight" that "sprawls like roadkill." The plot, a bit thin (but then the book is only 137 pages long) takes Atom on a mission to trace a missing brain that vanished the night the City Brian Facility blew up and the grey matter that's gone is none other than that of Tony Curtis. A motley crew of bizarre gangsters will do anything to see that Atom, his gorgeous, smart and tough girlfriend Madison Drowner and Jed Helms don't succeed. Reading Aylett is not reading for depth of character, intense emotional subtlety or intricate background descriptions; rather, it's like reading a manic anime noir where the imagery dominates - stark and startling, with satirically over-the-top metaphors abounding and the pacing lightning-swift, cutting from one scene to the next almost too fast to follow. Yet the language is so clever and witty that the reader is only too happy to go along for the mad car-chase of a ride in order to encounter bits like this: "Industrial gothic was tempered by Bren Shui, the art of exchanging negative energy with the environment through the correct placement of firearms around the house." Laugh out loud moments of this sort are to be found on practically every page of

When you need to speak to one of Eddie Thermidor's boys then you better send the right man. Taffy Atom is that man. He's made his luck on the streets of Beerlight, a city that sprawls like roadkill, and he has a truly monstrous goldfish.
Maybe he can get to the bottom of what happened the night the City Brain Facility blew up, taking with it the brain of Tony Curtis ...
Atom confirms Steve Aylett as one of the most exciting and original voices in fiction today, and Beerlight as a city you really don't want to visit on holiday.

Steve Aylett
Steve Aylett was born in Bromley, England, in 1967. He left school at 17 and worked in a book warehouse, and later in trade and law publishing - here he invented the concept of 'fractal litigation', whereby the flapping of a butterfly's wings on one side of the world results in a massive compensation claim on the other. His first book The Crime Studio , published in 1994, was generally regarded as a 'cry for help'. This was followed by Bigot Hall Slaughtermatic The Inflatable Volunteer Toxicology and Atom . He is published by Orion in the UK and Four Walls Eight Windows in the US, and was nominated for the 1998 Philip K Dick Award (Slaughtermatic). His toured 'Shroud' show, during which he silently impersonated the Shroud of Turin, caused rage and impatience in clubland in the early '90s. His stories have appeared in the bestselling Disco Biscuits anthologies (Sceptre). He lives in Brighton, England. Steve Aylett in his own words: It's less insulting to the reader to say something in a few words, like 'Progress accelerates downhill', than to spend an entire book saying that.

The Entropy Kid: Steve Aylett
Steve Aylett
Interviewed by Barry Forshaw Steve Aylett, in just three novels, has cornered the market in hip, mordant and highly individual crime fiction - if it's crime fiction he writes. As Phoenix House publishes his latest, Slaughtermatic , we try to find out what's behind the dark glasses. Is your new book a lampoon of the crime genre?
Yeah, Slaughtermatic is a sort of crime satire. When people ask about it who haven't read my other stuff, I save time by calling it a kind of Catch 22 but about crime and law, rather than war. I mean that it's a similar satire of aspects of authority, of manipulations too extreme to process or even talk about in everyday chat. And there's some nice gunplay in there too, and jokes about dogs and so on. The guns are quite unusual.
Well I burnt out straight gun fetishism in the course of doing The Crime Studio - that sort of shoot-out just feels like noise now, it doesn't mean anything. So I started to give the guns meanings by inventing software-enhanced guns, fire-by-wires, like the Zero Approach gun which scans the targets aura to see whether they're asking for it, as it were - it seeks their consent. Then there are guns that fire calories, drugs, ideas, charm, guns that ignore the target, guns that can be set for a certain demographic range, guns that can be set for Mexicans, randomizers, glass guns, tantrum guns, all this. So when a shoot-out happens, it means something, it can be like a philosophical exchange. The Crime Bill means people have to design and produce untraceable one-off firearms and that leads to a little bit of inventiveness at least, which is at a premium these days. So you have Hitachis, Mitsubishis, and Macs of course. There are also Microsoft guns, though they take a long time to fire.

Bigot Hall by Steve Aylett reviewed by John Kenny
Original appearance: Albedo one issue 9
I picked up Bigot Hall by Steve Aylett not knowing what to expect and it just blew me away. It is anarchic black humour at its best, filled with witty observations and completely off the wall characters, whose volatile natures and violent dispositions I have never met the like of before. I never laughed so much at such outrageous brutality; I'm utterly ashamed of myself.
There were many things I was reminded of during my journey through this book: the quasi-dimensional eponymous Bigot Hall, which maintains a tenuous grip on reality, had many of the attributes of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast, along with the quirkiness of its characters. Uncle Snapper was very much like Trevor Howard in Sir Henry at Rawlinson's End. There was even a touch of Moorcock in here a la Jerry and Catherine Cornelius' obsessive incestuous relationship.
Yes, it's a crazy mix, but shining through is Aylett's very own wicked sense of humour and style. If I have a quibble it's that the book is episodic with no real sense of a beginning, middle and end, and the price tag is a little steep for such a short work. However, it was a refreshing change from the standard, long-winded epics you tend to find on the shelves these days; definitely a question of 'never mind the width, feel the quality'.

Like the first book in the series, ‘Only An Alligator’, it's set in the city of Accomplice. This strange place has delights such as the Juice Museum and the Church of Automata. In ‘Only An Alligator’, Barny managed to thwart the demons with his unusual affinity with large animals. This seriously narked off the demons especially the leader, Sweeney. In this book, Sweeney seeks revenge and sends Skittermite to 'aggravate him unto death'. Meanwhile, the Major as a diversionary tactic creates the cult, Friends of Cyrl, but it gets out of hand and takes on a life of its own. Banners start appearing such as 'TOO DRY ELUSORY DREAM' and 'LET ROAD MURDERS YOYO'. Barny is totally unaware of Sweeney's intentions and is more intent on loosing his present girlfriend, Magenta Blaze, and chasing after Chloe Lowe. He seeks advice on his love life from the shaman Beltane Carmon. The advice given satisfies Barny but confuses the hell out of the reader.

Steve Aylett was last reviewed in these pages as author of the story Gigantic which appeared in the collection Disco 2000 . This is Aylett's third novel, following The Crime Studio and Bigot Hall , and returning to the city of Beerlight . Additionally, characters like Blince, Parker and Panacea are featured, though are not the central characters. Those roles are taken by Dante Cubit, The Entropy Kid and Rosa Control . As I say, this book is set in a city called Beerlight , a city which Aylett describes: "Where to kill a man is less a murder than a mannerism.
Where integrity is no more than a fierce dream.
Where crime is the new and only art form." With the central characters being proponents of the style - hence the book kicks in with a crime. Dante and The Entropy Kid are robbing a bank - but this isn't merely about money, it's about artistic statement, and as such their target is something special. While The Entropy Kid covers the staff/customers
