Augustus Caesar Description Right after Caesar was murdered, Octavian encountered opposition from Mark Antony who wanted take Caesar's place. Octavian quickly made an alliance with Antony to avenge Caesar's murder. After this the two men made an alliance with one of the most powerful generals in the Roman army, and ruled as triumvirs (3 dictators ruling together). The new triumvirs immediately published a list of names who were sentenced to immediate death and who's land was to be seized by the state. Octavian and Antony won a victory over Brutus and Cassius, who were two of the murderers of Caesar, and killed them. After this victory, Antony ruled the eastern part of the empire and Augustus went back to Rome. In 40 B.C. Octavian and Antony ended their partnership and by 33 were at war with each other. Antony divorced Octavian's sister (a marriage arranged for political reasons) and married Cleopatra, who was queen of Egypt. However, by September 31 B.C., Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra off the coast of Actium (which is off the western coast of modern Greece) leaving Octavian as the undisputed leader of Rome. When he became the new leader of the Roman Empire he refused to be called rex (king) or dictator (dictator), but was eventually given the title Augustus which refers to ``one consecrated by religion". ``Victory in the east, the vindication of his political policies in Italy, and the booty of the Ptolemies gave him an unassailable position, soon expressed in terms of divinity." Augustus wisely did not take too many titles or honors from the Roman senate very quickly because he saw what happened to Caesar when he made this mistake. Instead, he acted as if he was going to bring back the republic that many Romans wanted. Doing this, he gained favor with the senate and the people of Rome. Eventually, they would grant him all the power he wanted without he himself ever having to fight for it. Augustus reigned 44 years from 31 B.C.-A.D. 44 and extended the empire greatly during his rule.
