Definition: The first Roman Emperor. His real name was Octavian, and he was Julius Caesar's adopted son. He played a large role in the civil war that followed Julius Caesar's assassination, and his victory and strength made him an ideal candidate to fill the void in government left by Caesar's death. In between, he was a member of the Second Triumvirate, along with Marc Antony and Lepidus. When Antony became involved with Cleopatra (Egypt's pharaoh) and decided to fight Rome, Octavian played a part in defeating Antony's forces. Once Antony was out of the way and Lepidus was forced to retire, Octavian was free to become Augustus Caesar. Related Resources:

He then took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus. When Caesar was assassinated in March 44 BC , his young heir was with the army at Apollonia, in what is now Albania . He crossed over to Italy and recruited an army from among Caesar's veterans. At Rome he found Caesar's republican assassins

    Augustus Caesar
    Dynasty XXXII
    63 B.C.E. - 14 C.E.
Octavian Augustus is known as the first, and one of the greatest, Roman Emperors ever. Octavian enabled the long, peaceful time of the Pax Romana by changing Rome from a fragile, crumbling republican government to a mighty empire. Octavian was born on September 23, 63 B.C.E. His great-uncle was Julius Caesar and, therefore, he had many political connections in Rome. Caesar favored Octavian from an early age. In 48 B.C.E., Caesar had his fifteen-year-old great nephew elected to the priestly college of the pontifices, and he also enrolled him in the hereditary patrician aristocracy of Rome. Octavian joined Caesar in 46 B.C.E. on a campaign against Pompey Cleopatra and Antony. Octavian defeated his foes at the naval battle of Actium and became sole ruler of Rome. In 27 B.C.E., Octavian made a bold and clever political move by declaring the Republican Government restored. He immediately offered to resign from the position of consul, but the Senate, instead of accepting his offer, decided to give him the position of princeps. The Senate also gave him the name Augustus, meaning "revered one". The Senate decided to give Octavian control of the provinces of Gaul, Syria, Spain and Egypt. These areas had large numbers of troops stationed within their borders giving Octavian almost total military authority. While the household managed the daily affairs of the empire, Octavian made it his duty to beautify the city. He once said that he had found the city in brick, and left it in marble. Octavian reformed the tax system by taking a census to determine how much each province should pay in taxes. He held strong beliefs in traditional Roman religion. He restored over 80 temples and passed strict moral laws that mirrored older Roman values. When Octavian died in C.E. 14, his achievements seemed remarkable, and they would only become more remarkable as time passed. Octavian had adopted his stepson Tiberius and made it clear he would be his successor.

    From Octavian to Augustus:
Images Illustrating His Rise to Power
During the decades leading up to Julius Caesar's dictatorship, Roman coinage took on an increasingly personal character, displaying designs with a clear propagandistic message promoting the family or the political favorites of the moneyer who struck the coins for that year. Types commemorated victories, beneficent legislation, famous ancestors, and the like. The trend reached an extreme in early 44 BC when Caesar, stockpiling money to pay for his imminent Parthian campaign, had coins struck with his own portrait, a first for the official coinage of Rome (the images of living Romans had appeared on coins at the periphery of the empire as early as ca. 196 BC, but never on Rome's official state issues). This move was counted as one among many which showed Caesar's tendency towards monarchical behavior and which resulted in his assassination. Far from removing this problem of self-aggrandizement on coinage, however, Caesar's death left the field open for a wide array of would-be rulers who copied the trend to promote themselves, first among the soldiers who supported their causes (for pay and rewards of booty), secondly among the rest of the populace. Thus, we have today a most interesting numismatic documentation of portraits and propagandistic messages of the men who struggled for power in the political vacuum left by Caesar's sudden departure; more to the point, we also can trace the rise to power of Octavian, who ultimately became Rome's first Emperor, known otherwise as Augustus. These are presented below.

Augustus Caesar and His Role in the Pax Romana
    Deanne Winnat
University of Central Arkansas During the 1st century BCE, Rome was experiencing difficulties within the Republican government. In the later half of the century, one man rose to power and completely changed Rome. By using the army and republican institutions, he turned Rome from a declining republic into an empire that would last for centuries. This man was Octavian Augustus Caesar. Octavian was able to be a part of the political scene in Rome because he came from a Patrician family who had connections within the Senate of Rome. Octavian was born on September 23, 63 BC, to Atia, the niece of Julius Caesar. As the great-nephew and adoptive son of Julius Caesar, Octavian was able to gain entry into the political sphere of Rome. In 48, at the age of fifteen, Octavian, through Caesar's influence, was elected to the priestly college of the pontifices, and in 45, he went to Apollina, in Illyria to round out and complete his education. His education was interrupted in 46 B.C., when he went to Spain with his great-uncle and adoptive father, Julius Caesar. While he was in Spain he and his uncle fought against the sons of Pompey the Great.

    Augustus Caesar
Written by: Unregistered The year 509 BC Rome finally became a Republic and thus started the Roman empire. As Rome rose to power they went through many wars and many conflicts between the plebeians and patricians. The republic was made out of 3 groups, the consuls which were 2 men elected from the senate, the senate which was made of 300 patricians, and the assembly made from plebeians. Many years later Rome started to reject the republic when it went into a series of civil wars. 3 men form the first triumvirate, Julius Caesar, Pompeii, and Crassus. Julius Caesar became the victor. He was then rewarded dictator for life. On the date September 23, 63 BC a boy was born. He was originally Caesar's grand-nephew. This boy would later grow to a power and change Rome for good. Around the years 16-15 BC, was formed the beginning of a civil service in Rome. This had never been done before but was destined to become an essential feature of the imperial system. Around the same time, a completely reformed administrative structure of Rome, Italy, and the entire empire was matured. The empire's financial system at the time was far more superior to anything else in the entire empire. This great financial system was based on the central treasury, but the details of its relationship with the treasuries of the provinces, and most of all the province of Augustus, are still unsatisfactory understood. Mainly because, even though the emperor proudly recorded his gifts to the central treasury, he did not report what funds passed in the opposite direction.

    Worship of Augustus Caesar

    by Alexander Del Mar

This very rare work shows how the worship of the Roman emperors delayed the establishment of Christianity as the chief religion of the West for several centuries. This material derived from the study of coins, monuments, astrological and astronomical cycles is used to establish a new chronology and survey of history and religion.
    From the preface:
"The worship of Augustus has been admitted.... Its religious significance lies in the inferences that are to be drawn from it.
... Augustus Caesar set himself up for that Son of God whose advent, according to Indian chronology synchronised with the reappearance of the Oriental Messiah; the date being A.U. 691 (B.C. 63) the alleged year of Augustus' birth; that this claim and assumption appears in the literature of his age, was engraved upon his monuments and stamped upon his coins; that it was universally admitted and accepted throughout the Roman empire as valid and legitimate, both according to Indian and Roman chronology, astrology, prophesy, and tradition; that his actual worship as such Son of God Divus Filius- was enjoined and enforced by the laws of the empire, accepted by the priesthood and practised by the people; and that both de jure and de facto it constituted the fundamental article of the Roman imperial and ecclesiastical Constitution.

    Augustus Caesar (63 BC-AD 14)
    Roman emperor
The first Roman emperor, Augustus established an era of peace and prosperity throughout Rome and was himself one of history's most astute and innovative leaders. He restructured government, reformed the money system, built a vast network of roads, and in the capital itself erected many buildings of architectural importance.
Octavian - his name until he acquired his imperial title Augustus, meaning "Venerable" - was the great-nephew and adopted heir of Julius Caesar . When his great-uncle was assassinated, in 44 BC, he traveled to Rome to claim his inheritance. The following year, after becoming a senator and a consul, he formed a triumvirate with Mark Antony and Lepidus to govern Rome. He eventually rid himself of his corulers, and from 27 BC until his death wielded absolute power.
Caesar Augustus, was a complex man, capable of both cruelty and kindness, baseness and nobility. As testament to his historical significance, for centuries despots and dictators have attempted to recapture his mystique and emulate his splendor.

    The Death of Julius Caesar
See my poster. See my 3-D project. Julius Caesar was murdered by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius, who led a group of aristocrats in a plot to kill Caesar. They killed him on March 15, 44 B.C. They stabbed him to death as he entered a Senate meeting. He got over 20 wounds from men who had accepted his favors and who he had believed were his friends. The murder led to a war between Augustus and other rivals. The outcome was the empire. Octavian and his partner Mark Antony conquered Macedonia from Brutus and Cassius who were 2 of the republicans who plotted against Julius Caesar. While Antony settled the east Octavian had the task of settling veterans in Italy. In Caesar's will, Octavian was adopted and made Octavian his heir. He got the help of the orator Circero to legalize his adoption over the objections of Antony, Caesar's chief lieutenant who seized Caesar's money and papers. After Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide together, Augustus was the sole ruler of Rome. Antony had controlled Rome after the death of Caesar, but when Antony died Octavian took over.
    Augustus the Emperor
In 27 B.C., when Octavian became the first emperor of Rome, the Senate changed his name to Augustus meaning exalted and respected one. His official name was Imperator Caesar Augustus, but he was called Augustus. He proclaimed the restoration of the republic but was not willing to step down. In office he was given military command for 10 years and also the administration of the army in the provinces that the army was needed in. In 23 B.C., he received the tribunician power for life and assumed in this way the role of protector of Roman people.
