St.Augustine of Hippo
Woodland Road, St Austell, PL25 4R, Cornwall Visit our website There is a record of the Bishop of St. Pol de Leon, Brittany, finding shelter in a Catholic house in St. Austell in May 1802. He had escaped from the French Revolution, and spent 72 hours in an open boat before drifting into Penzance harbour! Catholic directories from 1857 mention Mass being said here at intervals by clergy travelling from Bodmin or Plymouth, Sclerder or Lanherne, Liskeard, Camborne or Par. The history of the Parish possibly dates from 1911 when a Sunday Mass centre was inaugurated in East Hill, St. Austell, above a painter and decorator’s workshop. In 1918 the Prior of Bodmin asked the Catholic Missionary Society to come to Cornwall. Their visit prompted the establishment of a permanent Chapel in St. Austell. The Dowager Lady Bute donated one hundred pounds for the cost of the site in Ranelagh Road. Twenty four years later, on 25th

A. Review
  • 1. The roles of reason and will in philosophical inquiry: four conceptions
Enlightenment (or Modern): The ideal is to proceed on the basis of "pure" or "cool" reason alone and to make inquiry as free from affection and authority as possible. This is initially accompanied by a robust optimism about the reliability of reason and its ability to lead us to true wisdom on its own [Descartes, Cleanthes, Mill]; but it can easily be turned to skepticism and even pragmatic indifference to the search for wisdom when this optimism proves unwarranted [Philo in his more cheerful and superficial moments].
Post-Enlightenment (or Post-Modern): It is a delusion to think of the search for wisdom as anything but a movement of will or instinct, with reason serving only to rationalize what one already accepts without reasonable grounds. Characterized by both (i) a seriousness with regard to ultimate metaphysical and moral questions and (ii) a suspicion regarding any claim to intellectual authority, including the so-called [sneer stage left] authority of reason [Nietzsche, Philo in his darker and more profound moments].
Classical: At its best, philosophical inquiry is an act of reason, presupposing moral rectitude, by which we are able to discoverwithin severe limitationsmetaphysical and moral truth. [Socrates]

Augustine 354-430 CE Turn off Pop-up blocker to insure hyperlinks work properly. Though his mother was a Christian, Augustine himself did not join the Catholic church until he was 33. He began his career as a teacher of classic Latin rhetoric. His personal intellectual quest, recounted in his Confessions The City of God Consensus of the Gospels Augustine took for granted the order of the gospels in the NT was the order in which they were composed. Moreover, he assumed that each writer had read the work of every predecessor. Thus, Augustine was the first to recognize a direct literary dependence of one synoptic gospel upon another. Since he had such a great influence on later biblical interpreters, his comments in Consensus of the Gospels 1.2.4 deserve direct quotation: Although each of these [gospel writers] may appear to preserve a certain order of narration proper to himself, this certainly should not be taken as though each individual writer chose to write in ignorance of what his predecessor had done, or left out things, which nonetheless another (gospel) is discovered to have recorded, as matters about which there was no information. Rather, the fact is that as each of them received the gift of inspiration, they abstained from adding to their distinct works any extra shared compositions. For Matthew is understood to have undertaken to construct the record of the incarnation of the Lord according to the royal lineage, and to give an account of most of His words and deeds as they relate to this present human life.

Augustine of Hippo: A Biography, Revised Edition with a New Epilogue > Customer Review #1: Impressive Documentation

Browns stated purpose with this biography is to tell about the "course and quality" of Augustine life with a backdrop of the changes in north Africa and in the Roman Empire as a whole. Brown says he wants to show how Augustine himself helped precipitate some of the changes by using the most "up-to-date" treatments of the life Augustine. Peter Brown, writing from All Souls College at Oxford, England, thoroughly documents the events, activities and inner workings of Augustine. The Bishop of Hippos story is interwoven with accounts of the state of the Roman Empire as a whole and North Africa, in particular. Browns telling is so vivid that an artist could chose a stage of Augustines life and then accurately paint Augustine surrounded by his local counterparts with elements of the Empire in the background.

Augustine was raised in Roman north Africa, educated in Carthage and employed as a professor of rhetoric in Milan by 383. He followed the Manichaean religion in his student days, and was converted to Christianity by the preaching and example of Ambrose of Milan. He was baptized at Easter in 387, and returned to north Africa and created an monastic foundation at Tagaste for himself and a group of friends. In 391 he was ordained a priest in Hippo. He became a famous preacher (more than 350 preserved sermons are believed to be authentic), and noted for combatting the Manichaean heresy. In 396 he was made coadjutor bishop of Hippo (assistant with the right of succession on the death of the current bishop), and remained as bishop in Hippo until his death in 430. He left his monastery, but continued to lead a monastic life in the episcopal residence. He left a Rule ( Latin Regula ) for his monastery that has led him to be designated the "patron saint of Regular Clergy," that is parish clergy who live by a monastic rule.

Augustine of Hippo: A Biography
An Updated Classic
Augustine of Hippo: A Biography . A New Edition with an Epilogue. By Peter Brown. University of California Press. 576 pp. $19.95. Reviewed by Robert Louis Wilken My worn and heavily marked copy of the original hardback edition of Peter Brown’s biography of St. Augustine, its binding held together by sturdy book tape, sits on a bookshelf close to my desk as it has since it first appeared in 1967. On the inside cover I have a little note, “Reviewed in Christian Century 1968,” and at the rear a list of words and phrases with page numbers that caught my attention when I first read it. Now there sits beside it a shiny new edition, this one a classy paperback with a reproduction of the Vision of St. Augustine by Vittorio Carpaccio (1460–1523) on its cover. The man who wrote the original work was a promising young scholar in his early thirties at All Soul’s College at Oxford; the person who issues the new edition is Rollins Professor of History at Princeton, the most renowned student of Augustine in the world, and one of the most respected historians of the religious history of the later Roman Empire. The text of the biography remains the same, but Brown has added two lengthy epilogues, the first entitled “New Evidences,” the second “New Directions.” Like the book itself they are wise, engaging, and perceptive, written in the sparkling and graceful prose that Brown seems to produce so effortlessly.

73. Saint Augustine Of Hippo, Christian Travelers, Guides
The Rule of St. Augustine an early monastic rule attributed to augustine of hippo outlining life in the monastery. It deeply influenced the Dominican Order.
http://www.christian-travelers-guides.com/Content/history/augustine.html
The greatest of the Latin Christian Fathers and African theologians and one of the outstanding thinkers of all time. Augustine was of Berber descent and almost certainly Black. His mother, Monica, was a Christian whose virtues he praised. But at Carthage he was drawn into sexual excesses: later, while studying rhetoric and philosophy, he came under the influence of Manichaism followed by Neoplatonism. In the spring of 387, after many sessions with Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, and the study of the Bible, Augustine was baptized. The events of Augustine's life are recorded in his Confessions which is a spiritual classic and the first real work of Christian autobiography. Augustine's Christinaity remained strongly ascetic and his writings display a remarkably African ethos. In 396 he was consecrated Bishop of Hippo and remained a pastor until his death. For more than thirty years Augustine was the leading the theologian in African Christianity. In 410 the Goths sacked Rome and the pagans blamed the Christians whose God they said caused the disaster. Augustine put the capstone on his theological activity by defending the Christians against this charge in his great work The City of God Augustine's theology helped bring about the Protestant Reformation and deeply influenced early Protestant theologians such as Martin Luther and John Calvin who were strongly Augustinian in their outlook.

Saint Augustine of Hippo was an icon of the Christian faith and came from a Phoenician Punic stock. He called the Punic language "our own tongue". Biographical information Saint Augustine of Hippo was born at Tagaste on 13 November, 354. Tagaste, near ancient Hippo-Regius, was at that time a small free city of proconsular Numidia. Hippo-Regius and the surrounding area were Tyrian Phoenician colonies on the west coast of the bay. It was gaven the name Hipponensis Sinus; the surname Regius was bestowed on it as one of the places where the Numidian kings resided. Later it became a Roman colonia and prospered until A.D. 430, when it was taken by the Vandals. Hippo had recently been converted from Donatism. Although eminently respectable, his family was not rich, and his father, Patricius, one of the curiales of the city, was still a pagan. However, the admirable virtues that made Monica (Saint Monica) the ideal of Christian mothers at length brought her husband the grace of baptism and of a holy death, about the year 371.

by Nancy Oliphant Send an E-card with this image Narrative: Augustine was born to a pagan father and Christian mother, St. Monica, in a North African farming village near the border between present day Algeria and Tunisia. In his time, the region was a province of the Roman Empire. Augustine received classical education and training in rhetoric at Carthage. He then held teaching positions there as well as in Milan prior to his conversion and baptism in 387. After returning to Africa, he was ordained and subsequently appointed Bishop of Hippo Regius. He actively tended his episcopate there until his death over 30 years later. Since then, St. Augustine's copious writings have continued to influence Christian dogma and theology.
In this icon, to represent his intellectual contributions and stature as a Doctor of the Church, St. Augustine holds a scroll which is surrounded by flames and bears a quotation from his Confessions, a spiritual autobiography. Augustine's garment reflects those worn in antiquity by Alexandrian bishops. And the swirling golds of the background recall the movements of grace which transform the restless human spirit.
