t. Augustine was a Third Century rhetorician who became a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. Augustine was also a prolific writer on many subjects such as the liberal arts and Greek Pagan philosophy. His writings greatly influenced the development of the church as well as western culture and education.
Education and Background
Augustine was born to a pagan father and Christian mother in the city of Tagaste, in the Roman colony of Numidia (now known as Algeria). His formal education began at the public school in nearby Madaura, where Augustine was introduced to the polite language of Latin. Up until this point, he had for the most part spoken the Punic dialect of Numidia, and he became enthralled with the world of literature opened up to him through Latin. Augustine's studies of pagan Latin literature (particularly Cicero and Virgil) would greatly influence his style in later writings. After recieving his degree in Rhetoric from the university at Carthage, Augustine went to work as a teacher of rhetoric. It was at this time that Augustine read Cicero's "Hortensius", in which Cicereo places wisdom and th pursuit of truth above the value of Rhetoric. Augustine soon vecame torn between his ambition for a great career as rhetorician, and the pursuit of spiritual truth and wisdom(Fulop-Miller, 1945). His search for answers led him to the philosophy of Manichaeism (Brown, 1967). Augustine returned to his hometown of Tagaste and established himself there as a professor of rhetoric. He used his post there to advance the teachings of the Manichaes. When Augustine's closest friend died, he became disenchanted with this dualist philosophy because it could not produce answers to assuage his grief. This event left Augustine in a state of confusion with a complete lack of confidence. The brilliant rhetorician of Tagaste gave up his teaching to return to Carthage, where he again took up teaching while searching for a philosophy to solve the riddle of his Self (Fulop-Miller, 1945).

Augustine of Hippo
The Early Church
North African bishop and theologian, an architect of western Christian tradition.

A medieval artist's vision of the City of God Born to a pagan father and a Christian mother, Augustine was in his youth a devotee of Manichean teachings. After a period as a teacher of rhetoric, he came under the influence of Ambrose of Milan and was drawn to Christianity. Augustine’s Confessions recount his protracted struggle with the Christian faith and dramatic conversion, in which his Christian mother Monica played a crucial role After living for a short time in a semi-monastic community, he became a priest and soon thereafter bishop of Hippo. He continued in this office until his death. Augustine's work as a theologian and architect of the western Christian tradition as definitively shaped by his tasks as a bishop. Among the most influential of his theological writings was his summary work, On Christian Doctrine.

e-mail: simon@suffolkchurches.co.uk St Augustine of Hippo, Ipswich This is a large 1920's estate church on the south-eastern outskirts. Diocesan architect Munro Cautley observed the letter of Suffolk Perpendicular rather than the spirit. Consequently, the church looks rather dumpy in its concrete rendering. Grander than his St Andrew , it has none of the spirit of its age that you find at contemporary near neighbour All Hallows Mock-Perpendicular rises above mock-Tudor on the Bucklesham Road. Still, this is a landmark building, and it is light and airy inside. It contains the bell from the now-vanished church of St Peter, Linstead Magna , which was derelicted the year before St Augustine was built. Supposedly, the font is from there, too. But it seems possible that the Linstead Magna font was moved to St Margaret, Linstead Parva , and St Augustine inherited the old font from Linstead Parva. A bit like one of those party games. Cautley takes himself rather seriously in south-east Ipswich.

SAINT augustine of hippo BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH—354430A.D. Feast August 28. Saint augustine of hippo. Celebration of Feast Day is August 28.
http://www.ewtn.com/library/MARY/AUGUSTN2.HTM
SAINT AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH—354-430A.D. Feast: August 28 Pope Leo I, during whose pontificate Augustine was canonized, ordered that the feast of this saint should be observed with the same honors as that of an Apostle. In every succeeding age his memory has been held in the highest veneration and his writings have been an inspiration to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Augustine was born on November 13, 354, at Tagaste, a small town of Numidia, North Africa, not far from the episcopal city of Hippo. His parents were citizens of good standing, though not wealthy. The father was one Patricius, a hot-tempered man and a pagan, who, under the influence of his Christian wife, the saintly Monica, learned patience and humility and was baptized shortly before his death. Of this union there were three children: Augustine, another son, Navigius, and a daughter, Perpetua, who became an abbess. He wrote the book, he says, for "a people curious to know the lives of others, but careless to amend their own," to demonstrate God's mercy as shown in the life of one sinner, and to make sure that no one should think him any better than he really was. With the utmost candor Augustine divulges the sins and follies of his youth, and at the end enumerates the weaknesses which still beset him. With a copy of the book which he sent to a friend, he wrote: "See now what I am from this book; believe me who bear testimony against myself, and regard not what others say of me."

Augustine of Hippo (354-430) Although same-sex friendships played a more important role in his emotional and personal life than relationships with women, his hostility to all forms of nonprocreative sexuality caused Augustine to condemn homosexuality. Augustine was born in Thagaste, Numidia (now Algeria), to a Romanized family of Berber origins. Much of his youth and early adulthood was dominated by his mother Monica, a pious and spirited Christian. Having received a traditional literary education, he embarked on the career of a Roman rhetorician. Sponsor Message.
At about nineteen, he was converted to the "love of wisdom" by reading Cicero's Hortensius . Henceforth the promotion of a career would be balanced by intellectual and spiritual pursuits. Being repelled by the Bible's apparent "barbarity," Augustine drifted into Manichaeism. After nine years' involvement with this religion, he became disillusioned of its truth-claims. He traveled to Rome and, after a brief liaison with academic skepticism, was appointed imperial rhetorician at Milan. There he was introduced to Bishop Ambrose, a man whose spiritual intensity was matched only by his political ability. Ambrose's allegorical method of interpretation largely reconciled Augustine to the Christian Scriptures. In addition, he became deeply influenced by the philosophy of Plotinus and Porphyry, and also began an attentive reading of St. Paul's letters. It was in this intellectual-religious context that Augustine committed himself to Christianity.

57. AUGUSTINE'S TRINITARIAN VISION By YVES CONGAR
augustine of hippo S APPROACH TO THE TRINITY AND FILIOQUE. from I Believe in the Holy Spirit vol. 3, p. 8095. by Yves Congar, OP.
http://www.praiseofglory.com/augustinetrinity.htm
AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO'S APPROACH TO THE TRINITY AND FILIOQUE from "I Believe in the Holy Spirit" vol. 3, p. 80-95 by Yves Congar, O.P. The oldest surviving image of Augustine, from the 6th century AD at the Lateran in Rome One reason I think it important to include this essay on my own Filioque Page is that among some voices St Augustine's Trinitarian vision is significantly misunderstood and sometimes distorted seriously as well. A rather blatant example of this distortion of Augustine can even now be found online in a rather well-known essay by Thomas Ross Valentine, giving his own version of the history of the Filioque. Since Mr. Valentine does not give me the permission to reproduce his essay, I link to it so you can read it, most particularly the section dealing with St Augustine and then you may see why I think it good to have this essay by Yves Congar available for the continuing dialog! So if you wish, you can first read Mr. Valentine's History of the Filioque , especially the section under "Objection: The filioque undermines the Holy Trinity." I believe the following essay by Yves Congar shows not only the depth and profundity of St Augustine's Trinitarian vision and Pneumatology but offers some truly balanced insights as well, and indicates some "points of contact" as well with Augustine and the Greek Fathers.
