John Aubrey and the 17 th century coffee house Grant McCracken © Grant McCracken 2002 John Aubrey loved the coffee house.   It was one of the engaging novelties of his age.   The first one appeared in London in 1652 when he was still, relatively speaking, a young man, and he went there often. Well born and well educated, Aubrey was not prosperous in adult life.   Family debts and a series of law suits forced him to sell his estates and throw himself on the kindness of kin.   He was forced, often, to live with relatives and this meant staying up all hours while they favored him with the weight and wit of their conversation.   ( Aubrey found time to write only by rising early and scribbling hard while his relatives, exhausted by their acts of intellectual generosity, slept on.) Aubrey felt his status as a poor relation most acutely at table.    The little dominion of the table was controlled by the host.     It was the host who determined who would sit at table.   It was the host who determined the ebb and flow of conversation.    And it was the host who demanded a poor relation’s full deference.   Aubrey was obliged to be obliging and in this he was England Every subordinate at every table was there at the indulgence and the direction of the host.

Aubrey's 'Brief Lives'
April 5, 2002 John Aubrey (1626-1697) was singularly unsuccessful in his worldly affairs. He was born wealthy, but lost all his property in a tangle of disastrous lawsuits. Without property or responsibility, and well-loved by a large circle of friends (including some of the leading men of his time), he was free to devote himself to sociability and his antiquarian interests. Aubrey was a pioneering archaeologist and an indefatigable researcher. He had lived through the English Civil War and the Commonwealth, and he was acutely aware that since then everything had changed: continuity had been broken, the whole pre-Puritan world had passed out of existence, and he felt a strong urge to preserve what he could. Nevertheless, Aubrey lived in the present: he was one of the original members of the Royal Society and he remained fully abreast of the advances of his day. The dreadful Oxford don Anthony Wood, who was preparing a dictionary of Oxford writers and churchmen, enlisted Aubrey to collect biographical information. Aubrey's biographical researches soon took on a life of their own. He wrote and collected vast amounts of material, but he was constitutionally unable to bring any work to a finished state. He managed to see only one book into print in his lifetime, his

    SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION
SEC V. W. DAVID BLUNK, AUBREY JOHN ELAM AND STANLEY C. EAVES, Civil Action Number 5:99-CV-372-3(M.D.Ga.) SEC SUES DAVID BLUNK, AUBREY JOHN ELAM AND STANLEY C. EAVES FOR OFFERING TO SELL FICTITIOUS PRIME BANK SECURITIES TO MERCER UNIVERSITY On September 22, 1999, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, alleging that a Texas lawyer, W. David Blunk, and two Charlotte, North Carolina businessmen, Aubrey John Elam and Stanley C. Eaves, committed securities fraud by repeatedly offering to sell fictitious prime bank securities to Mercer University. According to the complaint, when officials of Mercer became suspicious that the defendants' proposals were too good to be true, they met with members of the Commission's staff and other law enforcement authorities. Subsequently, Mercer instructed Blunk, Elam and Eaves to conduct all future negotiations with an undercover FBI agent posing as the University's investment consultant. The complaint alleges that Blunk, Elam, and Eaves made numerous misrepresentations in connection with their offers of securities to Mercer. According to the complaint, they repeatedly misrepresented that an investment of $5 - $10 million dollars would generate returns of 120% per year and that the safety of Mercer's principal would be guaranteed by one of several well-known European banks. The SEC alleges that Eaves and Elam also misrepresented what they were told about the investment by officials of a prominent Charlotte bank and by an FBI agent they spoke with in London. At other times, they misrepresented that the University could earn a return of 50% on an investment of $10 million in just 25 days.
