43. Bold Type: Margaret Atwood
Features an interview with atwood, an audio clip, and an excerpt from the novel Alias Grace.
http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0597/atwood/
A good historical novel is not easy to write: only thorough research and keen attention to detail can create a story which plausibly and accurately invokes the past. In Alias Grace, Margaret Atwood does just that with the tale of Grace Marks, one of Canada's most notorious female criminals. A servant girl convicted of murdering her employer in the 1840s, Grace tells her story in a remarkably vivid voice, from her childhood in Ireland to the hardships of being a servant and a member of the underclass in colonial Canada.
In this issue, Atwood shares with us some thoughts about her work on Alias Grace and the reaction it has received, and her editor, Nan Talese, tells Bold Type what it's like to work with this mischeviously clever writer. You'll also find an excerpt from Alias Grace, as well as a special Bold Type exclusive: a letter from a friend of Thomas Kinnear, whose murder is at the center of Alias Grace, to Kinnear's family in Scotland, informing them of his death and the circumstances surrounding it.

Atwood, Margaret Rape Fantasies
Genre Short Story (8 pp.) Keywords Power Relations Rape Society Women's Health Summary Written in 1977, "Rape Fantasies" appears to be a recap of a conversation among several women during their lunch hour, a few of them playing bridge, oneChrissy the receptionistreading aloud from a tabloid. When Chrissy asks the question, "How about it, girls, do you have rape fantasies?" the story unfolds with each woman's response, all retold from the perspective of Estelle, who's doing her best to deflect the entire conversation by concentrating on her bidding. The conversation is tragically ironic, moving from woman to woman, Darlene calling the entire subject "disgusting," Greta describing a Tarzan-like scenario, Chrissy describing hers in a bubble bath, when Estelle, ever the voice of reason, reminds them that what they're describing are sexual fantasies: "Listen . . . those aren't rape fantasies. I mean, you aren't getting raped, it's just some guy you haven't met formally who happens to be more attractive than Derek Cummins . . . and you have a good time. Rape is when they've got a knife or something and you don't want to" (104.)

This essay will examine the female protagonists of Margaret Atwood's Bodily Harm and The Handmaid's Tale . Rennie, of Bodily Harm and Offred, of The Handmaid's Tale are both women in their thirties used by the author to explore how they react to 'oppression in all its manifestations, both physical and psychological' [1]. Atwood, in her later novels and poems, seems to focus on the struggle in which she sees men and women as being caught up: 'Who can do what to whom and get away with it.'
Bodily Harm 'focuses on the contrast between affluent thinking and the brutal reality of power and sexual politics.' [2] The protagonist Rennie is a 'lifestyle journalist' who has just had a mastectomy. Atwood traces her internal torment in dealing with this, her troubled childhood, her relationship with men and a violent society at large.

Abstract
In her collection of short stories, Good Bones (O. W. Toad, 1992), Margaret Atwood has included Gertrude Talks Back , a piece that rewrites the famous closet scene in Shakespeare´s Hamlet . The character of Hamlet´s mother has posed problems of interpretation to readers, critics and performers, past and present, and has been variously or simultaneosly appraised as a symbol of female wantonness, the object of Hamlet´s Oedipus complex, and an example of female submissiveness to the male principle (Hamlet´s as much as Claudius´s). Like other revisionist rewritings produced by women writers in the last few decades, Margaret Atwood´s short story challenges received concepts of the female, and particularly the "Frailty, thy name is woman" notion that has marked so much canonical literature.
Margaret Atwood 1939 -
Revisionist rewritings are one of the strategies that can serve that purpose; I need not mention the by now many rewritings of such canonical texts as

59. Reconstructing The Wilderness: Margaret Atwood's Reading Of Susanna Moodie
Essay by Susan Johnston.
http://www.arts.uwo.ca/canpoetry/cpjrn/vol31/johnston.htm
Reconstructing the Wilderness: Margaret Atwood's Reading of Susanna Moodie
By Susan Johnston The literary relation between Atwood's The Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970), and Susanna Strickland Moodie's 1852 sketches of immigrant life, Roughing It in the Bush, or, Forest Life in Canada has been the subject of a number of critical analyses, many of which adopt the heuristic metaphors of "violent duality" and "paranoid schizophrenia" that Atwood applies to Moodie in the "Afterword". This Afterword has had an effect on Moodie and Atwood criticism very similar to that described by Anna Balakian as "false influence," in which a model text is distorted or transformed by a new text which illuminates the model text and inspires followers. So powerful is Atwood's reconstruction that not only most interpretations of The Journals of Susanna Moodie, but many independent discussions of Roughing It in the Bush as well, have succumbed to its lure. A new reading of this literary relation seems called for, one which considers Atwood's response to Moodie in terms of the creative relation Moodie achieved, by accepting and resisting inherited European aesthetics, with the wilderness landscape of colonial Canada. Such a reading is suggested by Atwood's poetic concern with the relationship of Canadians to their own landscape, and by the explicit stance of her criticism: "For the members of a country or culture, shared knowledge of their place, their
