Caroline Schermerhorn married William Backhouse Astor in 1853. She brought long lines of established social background to the Astor fortune and became the undisputed queen of American society. Caroline Astor insisted upon being called "The Mrs. Astor" by family and friends. With the help of a southern gentleman, Mr. Ward McAllister, she devised the famous "400," a list of 213 families and individuals whose lineage could be traced back at least three generations. Beechwood was built in 1851 for a New York City merchant named Daniel Parrish; the architects were Andrew Jackson Downing and Calvert Vaux. William Backhouse Astor, Jr., purchased the mansion in 1881, and it became the social center for New York Society for twenty-five years of the Gilded Age. William B., as his wife called him, was the grandson of John Jacob Astor , the German immigrant who made himself the richest man in America by investing in fur trading and real estate. As recent as 1999, he was listed as the fourth-wealthiest American ever (Microsoft's Bill Gates is fifth). The Astors hired architect Richard Morris Hunt to create an atmosphere at Beechwood that would be worthy of America's finest citizens. The family invested two million dollars in the renovations. Caroline Astor presided over countless social activities during the eight weeks each year she visited Beechwood. The highlight of every summer season was Mrs. Astor's Summer Ball. Mrs. Astor retired from social life in 1906. She lived quietly until her death in 1908.

Astor, John Jacob —1763-1848 John Jacob Astor was born in Waldorf, Germany in 1763 and emigrated to the New World at the close of the Revolutionary War, when he was 21. He arrived in Baltimore, penniless, but was shrewd and ambitious. He opened a small fur shop in 1786 in New York City and soon became a leader of the China trade.
In 1790, John Jacob Astor married Sarah Todd, whose mother was a Brevoort. Sarah Todd met Astor when she came to buy furs to make herself a coat. Her ability to judge furs and make them up won the heart of the dealer. The marriage brought young Astor into "the best Dutch New York society." This marriage was a business partnership as well as marital and proved a success in every way. His AMERICAN FUR COMPANY (1808) created the first American monopoly on the fur trade in U.S. territories. The Lewis and Clark Expeditions had opened his eyes to new opportunities in the Northwest Territories. He sent out two expeditions of his own to establish a fur trading post at Fort Astor, which eventually became the city of Astoria, Oregon. " You should buy Manhatten, they aren't making anymore of it."

    John Jacob Astor IV
John Jacob Astor IV July 13 April 15 ) was a businessman, inventor, and writer. A great-grandson of the fur trader John Jacob Astor , he was born in Rhinebeck, New York to William Backhouse Astor Jr and his wife, Caroline Webster Schermerhorn Astor In 1897 he built the Astoria Hotel, which became part of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. As a writer, his works include A Journey in Other Worlds , a utopian fantasy set in the year 2000. In 1891, he married Ava Lowle Willing, a Philadelphia socialite. Ava was beautiful and rather turned off by her husband, whom she married for the sake of a "good" social match. Ava bore John Jacob, known to his friends as Jack and his Harvard buddies as "Jackass", two children. The first child was William Vincent Astor , known to everyone as Vincent. He would later become Jack's heir. The second child was named Ava Alice Astor, always known as Alice. There was always speculation that Alice was not Jack's child due to her birth being 11 years after Vincent's and Ava's flirtations with other men during her marriage. A look at a photograph of Alice in later years shows a strong resemblence to Jack. A divorce was imminent and finally obtained in 1909 following the death of Jack's mother, Caroline. The dicorce forbade Jack of marrying in the state of New York during Ava's lifetime. Jack decided, nonetheless, to marry a young girl who was the slightly younger in age to his own son. Madeline Talmadge Force, age 18, married John Jacob, age 44, in his mother's ballroom at the Beechwood Estate in Newport, Rhode Island with his son as his best man. Society was not kind to the new Mrs. Astor and even Vincent, himself, was somewhat against the marriage. The solution was for the couple to disappear. So they went on an extended honeymoon in Egypt. Soon the girl-bride was pregnant and she and her husband wished to return to the United States for the birth of the child.

    Testing the Role of
    Government
    Burton W. Folsom, Jr.
What was the first industry in U.S. history to receive a federal subsidy? That dubious honor seems to go to the fur trade. If we study the story of the fur trade, we can see why government-supported companies so often fail and why entrepreneurs tend to provide better products at lower costs. The buying and selling of furs was a major industry in America throughout its early history. The key animal in the fur trade was the beaver, whose pelt made hats that were in style all over Europe in the 1700s. The fur trade was a worldwide enterprise. It linked fashionable women in Paris to New York exporters, to frontier traders, to Indian trappers. The pelts of beavers, muskrats, otters, and minks went one way and kettles, blankets, axes, and muskets went the other. At first, fur trading in the United States followed established patterns. The French and British had traded with the Indians for more than a century and the Americans simply picked up where they left off. Trapping methods, river routes, and trading posts were all in place.

    LITTLE JOURNEYS
    TO THE HOMES OF
    GREAT BUSINESS MEN
BY ELBERT HUBBARD JOHN J. ASTOR The man who makes it the habit of his life to go to bed at nine
o'clock, usually gets rich and is always reliable. Of course,
going to bed does not make him richI merely mean that such a
man will in all probability be up early in the morning and do a big day's work, so his weary bones put him to bed early. Rogues do their work at night. Honest men work by day. It's all a matter of habit, and good habits in America make any man rich. Wealth is a result of habit. JOHN JACOB ASTOR LITTLE JOURNEYS Victor Hugo says, ``When you open a school, you close a prison.'' This seems to require a little explanation. Victor Hugo did not have in mind a theological school, nor yet a young ladies' seminary, nor an English boarding-school, nor a military academy, and least of all a parochial institute. What he was thinking of was a school where peopleyoung and old were taught to be self-respecting
