Asaro's a Name to Watch - Harvard Ph.D. in Quantum Physics Dances Circles Around New York Publishing.
By Nancy Berland Propped against the bookcase in Catherine Asaro's second-story home office is the framed diploma for her Harvard Ph.D. in chemical physics. Nearby, dangling from the doorknob, is the bag stuffed with the tights and leotards the attractive brunette wears when she drags herself away from her computer for the one weekly ballet class she still manages to squeeze into her demanding schedule.
With her years of experience as a classical dancer, Catherine could just as well teach that class at Caryl Maxwell Classical Ballet. But as a respected scientist, CEO of her own firm Molecudyne Research and author of several highly acclaimed novels, the remarkably versatile California native has little time for the ballet bar these days. Instead, she's fielding offers to speak at prestigious scientific gatherings and meeting deadlines for novels contracted by two New York publishers.
Tor books publishes Catherine's Skolia novels: PRIMARY INVERSION, CATCH THE LIGHTNING (winner of the 1997 Sapphire Award), THE LAST HAWK (a Nebula nominee), THE RAIDANT SEAS, and, ASCENDANT SUN, all first in hardcover. Soon to be out is THE QUANTUM ROSE. THE VEILED WEB, was released by Bantam Books in December 1999. Her next book, THE PHOENIX CODE, is due out from Bantam in November, 2000. Her novella "Aurora in Four Voice" won the Analog Reader's Poll, the HOMer Award, the Sapphire Award, was selected for the Locus and tangent Recommended Reading lists, and was a nominee for both the Nebula and the Hugo.

from New American Library Price: Customer Review: I bought this for the Bujold story, but expected more finds among the other authors. Three decent stories out of 6 is disappointing. As suggested elsewhere, there seems to be a problem of authors who are good at 400 page novels scaling stories down successfully. While walking home from work one night, seventeen-year-old Tina Pulivok meets a tall stranger named Althor. Despite everything in her upbringing and background, Tina gets involved with Althor which leads her straight into the middle of a futuristic interstellar war. Tina, the main character of Catherine Asaro's second novel, Catch the LIghtning , is a poor Mayan girl living alone in Los Angeles. Orphaned by her mother's death, she was protected by her cousin Manuel until he was killed in gang fight a year earlier. Since that time, Tina has worked at a restaurant, been protected by Manuel's gang and tried to pursue her dream of attending college to receive a degree in accountancy. Unfortunately, Tina's actions do not correspond to what Asaro tells us about the girl. Yes, Tina is very intelligent, but that can not account for her knowledge of space shuttle flight suit design. Similarly, she is able to understand phrases and concepts which should be utterly foreign to a lower class Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles. Asaro implies an explanation for these dichotomies when she has Althor tell Tina that Tina is an empath, but Asaro's explanation of Tina's abilities don't fully explain her ease with picking up so much information. This knowledge may be explained by the fact that Tina is relating what happened in the past and may have gained the necessary knowledge over the years, but it mostly comes across that Asaro, who holds a Ph.D. in chemical physics, is mistaking her knowledge for Tina's.

The Last Hawk is the third novel set in Catherine Asaro’s Skolian universe, along with the novella "Aurora in Four Voices." Fortunately, each of these stories stands on its own. In fact, The Last Hawk Primary Inversion The action begins when Kelric, a scion of the Skolian empire and half-brother to the current Imperator, is shot down over a restricted planet, Coba. The planet, ruled by a matriarchy, is listed as restricted in the empire's databases, mostly at the connivance of the Cobans, who fear losing their autonomy if the empire takes notice of them. The novel follows Kelric through nearly twenty years of trying to fit into their society. Catch the Lightning was set against a mixture of human and Skolian culture
