Catherine Asaro's faster-than-light (FTL) space drive really works at least on paper. The physicist and science fiction writer has based the "inversion engine" of her Skolian Empire space opera series on her own thought experiments about new forms of space travel. Besides using it to get her characters from place to place, she first wrote about the mathematics of the FTL drive in an April 1996 paper in The American Journal of Physics Searching for breakthroughs in propulsion Research into space travel has been a focus for Asaro's work as a consulting physicist. Last year, she chaired two sessions of the "Breakthrough Physics Propulsion Workshop" at the Space Technology Applications International Forum in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Images

What was the use of being a powerful mage if you couldn't learn the spells? Once Chime had been the most promising mage in the land, feted and celebrated for her potential and future role in the kingdom. Then Iris, her young competitor, made a stunning leap in skill and turned Chime's world upside down.
Now no longer the most powerful, no longer promised to a prince - and still unable to harness her magic properly - Chime was set adrift. As was the new king's cousin - and former heir - Lord Muller. Yet when the neighboring kingdom threatened war, Muller and Chime were tasked with uncovering the plot. Both were flawed, yet unwilling to accept a lesser destiny than they had once known. Could this quest be the opportunity for redemption - or would it lead them to their deaths? Stained Glass Heart In the anthology Irresistible Forces , a trade paperback edited by Catherine Asaro.

A Quickie with Catherine Asaro - (Dec 2, 1997) Last month, feminist scholar Kay Mussell responded to the question: Many readers responded, but today, sci-fi author Catherine Asaro, who includes a very strong romantic component in her writing, responded to the same question. Here is what she had to say: As an author who writes romantic space adventure, a physicist with a PhD in atomic and molecular theory, a former ballet dancer, a wife, and a mother. I have never had the least doubt that romance is feminist. It is the only genre I know of where: What the heroine values is given priority. It is, in fact, the driving force of the story. She is rewarded for what she values by achieving her goals, as well as winning the hero, who is usually a hunk, among other things ("I do too appreciate your mind," she insisted. "Really. I do. I appreciate all of you." ). Which comes to . . . Romance acknowledges the "female gaze." We hear a lot about the male gaze in literature. An author may extol the aesthetic value of the heroine to such length that female readers are tempted to say, "all right, already. Get on with the story."

C atherine Asaro is the author of Primary Inversion Catch the Lightning The Last Hawk The Radiant Seas ... The Veiled Web and Ascendant Sun as well as the forthcoming The Phoenix Code and The Quantum Rose (part of which was serialized in the May-July 1999 issues of Analog ). She has also had several shorter works published in Analog , including the Hugo-nominated novella "Aurora in Four Voices". Dr. Asaro (she holds a Ph.D. in physics) has a gift for creating plausible scientific explanations for such seemingly unlikely phenomena as faster-than-light travel and telepathy. I first became aware of her work after it was recommended to me by my friend (and Strange Horizons Editor-in-Chief) Mary Anne Mohanraj; I picked up Primary Inversion, and I've been hooked on Catherine's books ever since. Although her writing is considered 'hard' SF, with detailed and plausible explanations of the physics behind the technologies she describes, it's also character-driven. Each of her books centers on a love story between two well-developed (and usually very different) characters, and her writing has earned rave reviews in The Romantic Times as well as Analog and Asimov's.

ISBN# 0-373-80203-X This book seems to me to be the kind of thing someone might buy as a gift for a young lady who probably dreams of marrying a prince. [It has a "G" rating in case you are the purchaser and wondering.] In southern Aronsdale, a young lady called Chime Headwind helps her family grow apples. One day the king comes to this hamlet along with one of his advisors, in search of one of the land's rare mages. Chime suspects that she has mage talent, but she does not wish to go live in Castle Suncroft . . . not even if it does mean she might marry the prince. But the king's advisor hauls Chime away from her family anyway. Meanwhile, Prince Muller Downfield does not appreciate being told by his uncle's advisors whom he should marry. He slips away into the woods surrounding the castle just as Chime escapes the king's "magick" advisor. Chime and Muller meet by accident, and accidentally fall in love. Now Prince Muller isn't that easy to fall in love with, nor is this tale simple. Prince Muller, at first glance, appears foppishfor his attire is perfect. It isn't until one gets to know him that one discovers Prince Muller strives for an outward appearance of perfection because he is accident prone. Ah, but there's a very special secret hiding behind those accidents!

Alan P. Scott Rants Reviews
at long last
I'm well aware this review is horribly belated. I read The Last Hawk when it came out in hardback, and now even its paperback release has been out for quite some time. This sorry state of affairs is entirely due to my own procrastination - Asaro's novel is a captivating read. Some details a few paragraphs below might be considered SPOILERS for The Last Hawk ; I don't think so myself but if you don't like to know any thing about a book before you start it you should skip this review. Also, this review contains some comments about Anne McCaffrey's newer book Nimisha's Ship , in which that work suffers by comparison with Asaro's - rabid McCaffrey fans will want to skip this, rather than waste time trying to change my mind about it. Otherwise, please press on... IF an sf writer is going to build a successful universe in which to set stories - I'm not for a moment suggesting that this is the only way to be a good sf writer, but it's certainly one good way - then it helps to build your universe well from the very beginning. Construct a milieu large enough to hold more tales than any one person could possibly write, but confine each individual vision to a comprehensible human scale - no ten-page lists of dramatis personae , please. Place stories in their settings as if they were sonic sculptures, near enough to harmonize but not so close together that they interfere or become cloying. Allow the details that define your universe to emerge from the background in their own time, as much as possible, rather than thrusting them in the readers' faces. And avoid getting

headlong
When I received a review copy of Catch the Lightning , physicist Catherine Asaro's second take on the Skolian Empire, I was already predisposed to enjoy it. I knew I'd have to be very careful not to allow my feeling for the earlier book to have undue influence over my reaction to this one (I went on record raving about her first novel, Primary Inversion Therefore I'm glad to say that I'm honestly able to praise Catch the Lightning , with only a few faint damns here and there. I've already read it twice, in fact. I will admit that Asaro's particular brand of exuberant neo-Campbellian super-science fiction didn't seem quite as fresh as it did when I found Primary Inversion . But the novel suffers only slightly from the symptoms of sophomore slump, and that mainly in comparison with its action-packed predecessor. Her prose still carries a healthy dose of the headlong sense of wonder for which I started reading sf lo these many years ago, and she doesn't let her background as a physicist get in the way of a good story. If you read and enjoyed Campbell's own series of Arcot, Wade and Morey stories, for instance, then you surely ought to give Asaro's books a try. Asaro's milieu is not a mere nostalgic reconstruction of pulp from the 1930s, however; she is able to bring in elements of more modern sf (sex, for one!) without breaking the charm she begins weaving from the first scene of

The Quantum Rose , Catherine Asaro, TOR, 2000, 398 pp. With The Quantum Rose , Catherine Asaro continues her resourceful practice of filling in the gaps of her future history. This time around, Asaro does not use a viewpoint character that the reader is already familiar with (such as Sauscony Valdoria of Primary Inversion and The Radiant Seas , and Kelric of The Last Hawk ), and the story is stronger for that fact. The main character of The Quantum Rose is a woman named Kamoj, and while she encounters a Skolian in the course of the story, she has an outlook on life that is worlds apart from the Skolian outlook that Asaro has explored in her other books. The Quantum Rose Kamoj is governor of Argali Province. She is engaged to marry Ironbridge, the governor of the eponymous neighbouring province, but Ironbridge is abusive, egotistical, and selfish. A strange new aristocrat, Lionstar, has rented some land and a palace from Argali, and soon Lionstar makes Kamoj a marriage offer. Kamoj goes to live with Lionstar, and begins to find out about this strange man. Is she in love? Perhaps, but Ironbridge, the villainous scumbag that he is, does not shy away from violence. What follows is some standard woman-in-peril shenanigans, but Asaro uses it to critique the society of Argali and Ironbridge, and simultaneously poke a few holes in the non-interference policy of the Skolians. Because Lionstar is, of course, a Skolian. The reader doesn't know that immediately, and we follow Kamoj's process of discovery with the same sense of wonder as she does herself. Lionstar's real name is Vyrl, and he is a member of the Skolian imperial family and one of the most sensitive telepaths in the galaxy. In a crucial scene, Vyrl shares some of his past with Kamoj, and it is as wrenching an indictment of politics as could be possible: Vyrl was supposed to be smuggled off an interdicted planet in his father's coffin, but pickup was delayed, leaving him in a torment of sensory deprivation. The Skolian politicians could have ended his agony but that would have meant losing control of him again. Vyrl is only rescued after a month; suffice it to say that he has good reason for his psychological problems. Thankfully, Asaro doesn't let Kamoj be responsible for fixing Vyrl's personal difficulties.
