Contact Us Introduction Matthew Arnold, the Victorian poet and critic, was 'the first modern critic' , and could be called 'the critic's critic', being a champion not only of great poetry, but of literary criticism itself. The purpose of literary criticism, in his view, was 'to know the best that is known and thought in the world, and by in its turn making this known, to create a current of true and fresh ideas', and he has influenced a whole school of critics including new critics such as T. S. Eliot, F. R. Leavis, and Allen Tate. He was the founder of the sociological school of criticism, and through his touchstone method introduced scientific objectivity to critical evaluation by providing comparison and analysis as the two primary tools of criticism. Arnold's evaluations of the Romantic poets such as Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, and Keats are landmarks in descriptive criticism, and as a poet-critic he occupies an eminent position in the rich galaxy of poet-critics of English literature.

It currently is available in Irving Babbitt, Character and Culture (New Brunswick, N.J.: Transaction Publishers, 1995). Two or three good articles on Matthew Arnold have been written, notably that by Mr. W. C. Brownell in his Victorian Prose Masters , but Professor Sherman has the distinction of writing the first good book. Without being blindly partisan, Professor Sherman is himself a convinced Arnoldian, and so his interpretation has something of that 'indispensable personal gusto' of which he speaks. . . . Now that Arnold and his message have been put thus persuasively before Americans, one is naturally tempted to inquire what value this message is likely to have for them. In answering this question, it is well to insist with Professor Sherman on a point that is often missed—on Arnold's essential modernity. What is more, one may affirm that Arnold was misunderstood by his contemporaries, not because he was less modern, but because he was more modern than they, and that he is still misunderstood for the same reason. One needs, however, to protect this statement by a definition of the word modern. This word is often used, and no doubt inevitably used, to describe the latest thing; but it is not in this sense merely that men like Goethe, Sainte-Beuve, and Renan use it—Renan, for example, when he speaks of Petrarch as the 'founder of the modern spirit.' It is not in the sense of the latest thing that Arnold uses the word in his address on

Matthew Arnold December 24 April 15 ) was a Victorian era poet and critic. He was the son of Thomas Arnold , the legendary headmaster of Rugby School who was celebrated in the novel Tom Brown's Schooldays Matthew Arnold himself attended Rugby and then Oxford University Balliol College ). He wrote most of his best-known poetry before the age of forty, after which he turned to literary and cultural criticism. His poem " Dover Beach ", with its depiction of a nightmarish world from which the old religious verities have receded, is sometimes held up as an early, if not the first, example of the modern sensibility. In a famous preface to a selection of the poems of William Wordsworth , Arnold identified himself, a little ironically, as a "Wordsworthian." The influence of Wordsworth, both in ideas and in diction, is unmistakable in Arnold's best poetry. He was led on from literary criticism to a more general critique of the spirit of his age. Between and he wote Culture and Anarchy , famous for the term he popularised for a section of the Victorian population: "Philistines", a word which derives its modern cultural meaning from him.

Matthew Arnold, Culture is "High Culture" From Culture and Anarchy Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was a preeminent poet of the Victorian era, a lifelong educator, a pioneer in the field of literary criticism, a government official (Inspector of Schools), and an influential public figure. But one of his most enduring legacies is his extensive body of writing on the topic of culture. Arnold saw culture"contact with the best which has been thought and said in the world" (cf. "high culture" in the glossary) as the crucial component of a healthy democratic state. Arnold's view of culture as involving such characteristics as "beauty," "intelligence," and "perfection" is a Neoplatonic one that is, it tends to assume that these values exist in the abstract and are the same for all human societies. His argument, then, is openly political: he feels that if more people will share and pursue his notions of beauty, truth, and perfectionof culturethat the world will be a better place. Matthew Arnold Arnold was educated at Rugby, where his father, Thomas Arnold, was the influential headmaster from 1827 to 1842. Arnold senior was a Broad Churchman: he advocated the reform of the Anglican Church, supported measures such as Catholic Emancipation, and attacked the Oxford or The Tractarian Movement . His educational practices combined lots of athletic activity to foster team spirit and "manliness" with a strong sense of moral purpose; the next generation's application of these principles in their Christian Socialism became known as "muscular Christianity." Both muscular Christianity and Arnold's Rugby were fictionalized in Thomas Hughes' novel Tom Brown's Schooldays Matthew Arnold studied on a fellowship at the University of Oxford, and later became an inspector of schools, a post he held for most of the rest of his life. Although he fell in love with a French woman, written of as "Marguerite," during travels in Switzerland in 1848, they did not marry, and Arnold later married an English woman. Arnold is important both as a poet and as an essayist. He wrote most of his poems, of which "Dover Beach" is one of the best-known, by 1855, after which he turned almost entirely to essays and lectures. In 1857 he was elected Professor of poetry at Oxford.
