SOUNDER by William H. Armstrong Illustrations by James Barkley William H. Armstrong grew up in Lexington, Virginia. He was graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and did graduate work at the University of Virginia. Mr. Armstrong teaches history at the Kent School in Kent Connecticut, where he lives on a rockey hillside overlooking the Housatonic River. William H. Armstrong continues the story of Sounder in Soul Land. James Barkley was born in New york City, where he attended the School of Visual Arts and later taught at the Parsons School of Design. His work has been honored by the Society of Illistators and the American Intitute of Grafic Arts. Mr. Barkley's illistrations appeared in the first edition of Sounder, in 1969. Sounder is a good book. It won a Newbery Award in in 1970. It is about a poor African-American family that lived in the south in the 1800's. There are three boy's a mother a father and a dog. The father is a sharecropper, struggling to feed his family. The mother works for rich people that live down the road from them as a maid. One night a sheriff and his deputies came to their cabin and took the father to jail and it changed the boy's life forever. Back to Library

HOME VERIF. AMERICANS WILLIAM ARMSTRONG — S30831 State of Kentucky, Caldwell county, SS. On this 20 th day of August 1832 personally appears in open court before William Lauder, Morton A. Rucker, Coleman Ratliff, and James Weller, justices of the county court of said county, now sitting at the courthouse in ( ?). William Armstrong, a resident of said county of state, age seventy nine years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make this following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed January 7, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and serves as herein stated. That in the year 1780 in the county of Lincoln, state of North Carolina (where he then lived) he was drafted in the militia of that state for a three month tour against the British in South Carolina. William George, Baron Armstrong ) was an English industrialist, the effective founder of the Armstrong-Siddeley manufacturing empire. Born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne , Armstrong was originally launched on a career in law. However, his major interest was in engineering . In , he invented a hydraulic engine, following it up with other electrical and labour-saving devices, including the hydraulic crane. In , he founded the Elswick works at Newcastle, to produce various electrical devices and engines. The Armstrong breech-loading gun was one of his more successful developments, and in the works also began building ships. In , the firm merged with Joseph Whitworth Lord Armstrong purchased Bamburgh Castle as one of his residences, and also built the Victorian extravaganza, Cragside (now a National Trust property), further inland. The latter was the first house in Britain to be entirely powered by hydro-electricity, generated by a system of Armstrong's own design.
