YORKTOWN BIOGRAPHIES Lauzon, Armand Louis de Gontaut-Biron, Duc de. 1747-1793. Armand Louis de Gontaut-Biron, Duc de Lauzon, was the archetypical French aristocrat. Commissioned in the Regiment of French Guards before his 14th birthday, he distinguished himself in several campaigns before serving in the American Revolution. In 1778 he personally financed and organized his own "Foreign Legion", consisting of two companies of infantry, two squadrons of cavalry, and one artillery company. Lauzon's Legion campaigned independently during much of it's tenure in America, and acted as a seperate flanking force during General Rochambeau's march to Yorktown. During the siege, Lauzon based his force in Gloucester County, bottling up the British force at Gloucester Point, across the York River from Yorktown. Lauzon's forces were selected to provide the "guard" around Surrender Field as the British grounded their arms. After that war, Lauzon was promoted to lieutenant general, and served with the French Revolutionary Government. In 1793, Lauzon fell out of favor with the Revolutionary forces and was arrested and sentenced to death for "political crimes". Before his execution on December 31, 1793, he offered his jailer some white wine, stating "You must need courage in your profession."

Born to the possession of illustrious rank and educated in the most polished court of Europe; the idol of its women, the example for its men; it is not singular that his mind should have been strongly tinctured with a taste for chivalry." The Duc de Biron, Artist unknown This memoir of the Duke de Lauzun, who later took the title of Biron and died as Citizen Armand Louis de Gontaut, appeared in February 1800 in the Monthly Magazine; it was almost certainly written by Mary Robinson , one of many women who knew him very well. She continued: "His person was manly and prepossessing; his countenance pleasing and benignant; his conversation lively, interesting and well-informed; and his temper so irresistibly fascinating that he seldom was known to lose the affections of those with whom he had once lived on terms of sociability." Men liked him too: Talleyrand (that wily cynic who served under every government in all the twists and turns of French politics between the Old Regime of the 1780s and the reign of the Citizen King Louis-Philippe in the 1830) who rarely had a good word to say for anyone in fifty years of Machiavellian politics, wrote of Lauzun in his Memoirs that he was, "courageous, romantic, generous and witty."

Since mid-1994 he has lived and worked in Prague, where he teaches seminars at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University and edits the x-poezie chapbook series. His essays, poetry and short prose have been published in journals internationally, as well as in two anthologies: Infernal Cinders (1993) and The Zone (1994). In June 1997 Armand was awarded the Max Harris Prize for poetry at the Penola Festival, in Adelaide. His publications include, Inexorable Weather (Arc Publications), The Garden and Strange Attractors , (both with Salt), and Land Partitions and the newly released Malice in Underland (both with Textbase). Z Armand-Hippolyte-Louis Fizeau Physicist, b. at Paris, 23 Sept., 1819; d. at Nanteuil, Seine-et-Marne, 18 Sept., 1896. His father, a distinguished physician and professor of medicine in Paris during the Restoration, left him an independent fortune, so that he was able to devote himself to scientific research. He attended Stanislas College and then began to study medicine, but had to abandon it on account of ill-health and travelled for awhile. Then followed Arago's lessons at the Observatory, Regnault on optics at the college of France, and a thorough study of his brother's notebooks of the courses at the Ecole Polytechnique. In 1839 he became interested in the new photography and succeeded in getting permanent pictures by the daguerreotype. Foucault came to consult him about this work and became associated with him in their epoch-making experiments in optics, showing the identity of radiant heat and light, the regularity of the light vibrations, and the validity of the undulatory theory. Just as they were ready to develop the experimentum crucis (see FOUCAULT ) overthrowing the emission theory, they parted company and worked independently.

The Saint Gervais organ : the Couperins Armand-Louis Couperin Nicolas Couperin's son and ' cousin, he was provided his musical education from his father, like the other members of the family. When Nicolas died in 1748 , he succeeded him to Saint Gervais; he was then twenty one years old and was already a recognized virtuoso. In 1752 he married Elisabeth Blanchet, the daughter of the famous harpsichord maker, and thus got a relative well-off. His library, unusual for a musician, gives evidence of his large culture and its curiosity. However, his works are victims of too much ease to follow the fashions of that time and they did not survive him. He accumulated many posts of organist and then he owed, as it was usual, be frequently replaced by one of his three children, who all played the organ. Armand-Louis was killed a few months before the French Revolution in a traffic accident by going from the Sainte-Chapelle to Saint Gervais. Previous page
