Book cover art by Tim O'Brien. PATRICIA ANTHONY Cold Allies is one of the most chilling and memorable 90's SF novels I've read, and it's all the more remarkable for being Patricia Anthony's debut. The story is set during the Third World War, and yet this is not the simple pushbutton nuclear holocaust most of us have been conditioned to imagine WW3 would be. A famine-motivated assault on the West by the Arab National Army has nearly brought the disparate and disorganized Allies to their knees. Even the continental U.S. is mostly a wasteland of violent refugee camps where hopelessness holds sway. If things weren't bad enough, suddenly a new group of players injects itself into the conflict: sentient alien globes of blue light that hover across Earth's battlefields. Both sides of the conflict find themselves at a complete loss when confronted with these apparitions. In some cases, the lights seem entirely benign. One even follows the aforementioned battle robot like a curious lost puppy. Yet other times, the lights seem far less friendly, joining in the fray and killing wantonly on both sides, leaving ghastly wounds from which all their victim's bodily fluids are sucked dry. Nice.

62. Patricia Anthony's "Cradle Of Splendor"
patricia anthony s Cradle of Splendor. ©1997 L.Timmel Duchamp. patricia anthony s Cradle of Splendor is a fascinating, provocative political thriller.
http://ltimmel.home.mindspring.com/cradle.html
Patricia Anthony's Cradle of Splendor
Patricia Anthony's Cradle of Splendor is a fascinating, provocative political thriller. While its extended opening scene only hints at the stakes of the characters' often covert contention, it reveals straight off the tendency of the characters to (a) talk (or perceive) at cross-purposes (sometimes with grievous consequences), especially where sex and gender are concerned and (b) always serve associations and interests that are either invisible to arrogant eyes or deliberately concealed. But then Anthony's characters across the spectrum of her novels generally do not enjoy mutual knowledge of one another; power relations always figure seriously in how her characters perceive and relate to one another. Signs 12, 4; Summer, 1987.) Such talk sounds and feels cool and cute and in-control to the men but Anthony makes the significance of the linguistic conflation inescapable, especially as she reveals the source of the Brazillians' technology. (It's all a question of instrumentality, I suppose one could say.) Interestingly, the men themselves are confused about the relative power found in science and that found in raw military force. (I.e., they aren't sure where the real phallus is when the powers of science and the military are competing in an all-out pecking-order struggle.) We see this explicitly played out with Roger, the NASA nerd who is terrified of the CIA officers who are running him, and in the simultaneous articulation of idolization of Roger's scientific knowledge by the CIA station chief (who has been running him) even as he is preparing to kill him. This station chief, by the way, also indulges a riff about romantic love and how romantic love almost requires battering and murder and how the ultimate form of romantic love is necrophilism and beyond (the "beyond" being the deliberate "creation of the corpse" solely to have it to idolize, and not simply to possess the object of the romance i.e., deliberately creating the object to idolize with the full intent of doing so, rather than simply trying to control the object after one finds oneself idolizing her or him).

A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
In Flanders Field the poppies blow .... To Flanders in 1916 comes Travis Lee Stanhope. He has volunteered for the British Army, looking for escape and adventure. What he finds is hell. (As a Southerner, one suspects he refused to listen to General Sherman's statement along these lines.) Kim Stanley Robinson summarized it well in "A History of the Twentieth Century, with Illustrations": 54,000 men who died over a fifteen-year period are remembered on the Vietnam Memorial. Imagine one of those for the Triple Entente losses every *six weeks* of the Western front of World War I, or thirty-five Vietnam Memorials in all, lined up in a row. Along the Western front, there were 7500 casualties each day, not in battle, but from sniping; this was called "wastage." This is particularly noteworthy, because it is as a sniper that Stanhope comes to Flanders. Stanhope is an outsider: an American in the British Army, a Southerner constantly called "Yank," a reader of the Romantic poets in a company of men more interested in more earthly delights, a man blessed (or cursed) with "second sight." As such, he finds himself attracted to other outsiders, and Anthony does a good job of showing us the many faces of the outsider. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY compares this book to Erich Remarque's ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. I also saw a lot of parallels between FLANDERS and Stanley Kubrick's classic film PATHS OF GLORY. There is the heartlessness of the distant commanders in their commands. There is the insular attitude, the use of the outsider as scapegoat. What there is more of in Anthony's novel is the hell of war, a hell that could not be brought to the screen in the 1950s. She lays it all outnot just the battles and sniping and "authorized" killing, but also the disease and the maggots and the hardening of men's hearts and souls.

She entered H-wing of Ellis Unit past Barry Swotts, the young freckled-faced guard, and Frank Best, the balding older man. She knew they must dread her coming. Still, they were Texas-polite, tipping their caps. "Hey, how’s it going, Miz Jessup? Sure is a fine one outside."
She said, "I’m here. So what did you want?"
Jimmy Lee lifted his head and she could see the blankness of death in him. He was, she imagined, mulling things over.
With a compassion that annoyed her, he asked, "Didn’t get no sleep?" His imposing size was what she remembered from the trial. Yet since the first time they had sat face to face, his blue eyes struck her as too gentle for mass murder.
"I didn’t come all this way for you to patronize me," she snapped.
He seemed mildly puzzled. "Yeah, it’s bad, not getting no sleep."
"You a Christian?" Jimmy Lee asked.

Patricia Anthony
by Sara Martin
Patricia Anthony is the author of seven novels: Brother Termite Cold Allies (for which she won the Locus Award in 1994), Conscience of the Beagle Happy Policeman Cradle of Splendor God's Fires , and Flanders, as well as the short story collection Eating Memories
Formerly a classified advertising phone rep for the Dallas Morning News , a job she held for fifteen years, she now divides her time between writing and teaching Creative Writing at Southern Methodist University in Texas. Here Anthony answers questions about two of her novels, the first and the most recent: Brother Termite and Flanders Flanders , a mainstream novel dealing with WWI, has marked a departure from the s.f. - or, as she prefers, "speculative fiction" - genre. It is difficult to say whether her future work will combine speculative fiction and mainstream but, given Anthony’s comprehensive view of fiction, this seems likely. The forthcoming adaptation of Brother Termite and Flanders for the screen should, if all goes through, bring her a whole new audience . . . .and leave many readers puzzled as to how the same writer can create such vastly different fictions.

Last updated May 1st, 1998 As everyone knows, science fiction and fantasy literature are fickle fields. Authors come and go, bursting on the scene one moment, and then disappearing from sight the next. Many authors who show great promise in their writing live up to that potential, of course, but more often than not the author's work pales as time goes by. Patricia Anthony is a writer who is relatively new to the scene, having appeared in science fiction circles with her first novel, Cold Allies , in 1993. This book was actually her second written novel but the first one published. Anthony's writing is witty, solid science fiction, and she has gotten better and better as time goes by. I'm very fond of her first novel, but her second work, Brother Termite , was even better than the first, and Conscience of the Beagle was totally different than either of the first two novels. Anthony has the ability to tell very strong, character-oriented stories, as evidenced by all of her novels to this point. Her having written some short fiction in the past shows, since she's a writer who has a strong *feel* of how to write good characterisation, liberally spiced with descriptive prose that are to the point. The following is the listing of Patricia Anthony's fiction to this point:
Cold Allies (1993)
Brother Termite (1993)

Happy Policeman (1994)
Cradle of Splendor (1996)

Patricia Anthony, Flanders (Ace, 1998) There are few things more depressing in life than to see brilliance punished. The fact that it happens with disturbing regularity makes it no less palatable, and when it happens to a writer as overwhelmingly talented as Patricia Anthony, it's downright criminal. Flanders is, simply put, a marvelous work filled with bleak imagery and raw emotion that garnered wide acclaim and landed on many best-of-the-year lists when it came out. It also killed Patricia Anthony's career as a novelist. Ace, her publisher, specialized in straightforward science fiction and struggled with the marketing of Anthony's previous novel, God's Fires Flanders was, if anything, an even worse fit for that publisher, and things, as they say, went rapidly downhill from there. But if Flanders was so good, why couldn't it overcome those handicaps and find an audience? Well, it isn't science fiction to start with. Not even close unless one defines science fiction as anything that isn’t unambiguously mainstream. But that Flanders has both feet planted squarely in the fantastic, there is no doubt. Call it what you will speculative, fantasy, supernatural or magic realism the audience existed for this novel, and it’s a shame Ace didn’t look harder.

75. Patricia Anthony, God's Fires
patricia anthony, God s Fires (Ace, 1997). Of course, patricia anthony isn t your average writer, and God s Fires is not your average alien abduction novel.
http://www.greenmanreview.com/god's_fire.html
Patricia Anthony, God's Fires (Ace, 1997) It doesn't take long to figure out what's going on in God's Fires God's Fires is not your average alien abduction novel. For never before have aliens faced the Inquisition. Father Inquisitor Manoel Pessoa arrives in the small Portuguese village of Quintas and is immediately confronted by strange confessions of abductions and fornication with angels, of pregnant virgins and lights in the sky. Pessoa, a man of tentative faith and even less respect for his priestly vows, attempts to quell the wild talk lest more zealous prosecutors of heresy take interest. To this point, Anthony plays coy with her setup, using writer's sleight-of-hand to offer teasing glimpses of the supposed "angels", and the book plods deliberately along. But then the aliens pull a Roswell, plowing their silver acorn of a space ship into the side of a mountain, and all bets are off. Portugal's idiot King Afonso sees the fiery crash, takes it as a sign from God, and mounts a quest after the falling star from heaven. Inquisitor-General Gomes hears of the King's quest, mysterious grey "angels" and other heresies, prompting him to travel to Quintas to open a full inquiry of his own. Pessoa is caught in the middle, desperate to protect villagersignorant of their perilwho defy his protection; baffled by the strange, silent, grey "angels" within whose eyes some see paradise and others see damnation; and Inquisitor-General Gomes, who's hell-bent to burn the entire heretical village at the stake and none too discreet about his desire to consign the Jesuit-trained Pessoa to the flames as well.
