Maya Angelou (1928-)
Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928. She spent her childhood in California, Arkansas, and St. Louis, and lived with her paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson, for most of her childhood years. At age 8, she was raped by her mother¹s boyfriend in St.Louis; this led to years of muteness for Maya, which she finally overcame through help from a caring neighbor, and a great love for literature. At age 16, Maya became the first black streetcar conductor in San Francisco; in later years, she became the first black woman screenwriter and director in Hollywood. In the 60¹s, she was a friend to both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X; she served in the SCLC with Dr. King, and worked for years for the civil rights movement. Also in the 1960¹s, she worked and travelled in Africa, as a journalist and teacher, and helping with several African independence movements. In 1970, she published her first book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, to great acclaim, and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for poetry the following year. Angelou has had a long and distinguished career, and is a poet, writer, civil-rights activist, and historian, among other things. She was also an accomplished actress, dancer, and singer, having performed in a touring production of Porgy and Bess , Jean Genet¹s play, The Blacks, and the acclaimed television series, Roots. Angelou is probably best known for her autobiographical works, which include I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and All God¹s Children Need Travelling Shoes, and fill a total of five best-selling volumes.

MAYA ANGELOU
"The honorary duty of a human being is to love." Birthplace

Missouri, US
Education
Public school in Arkansas and San Francisco.
Other jobs
Teacher, actor, activist Did you know? She worked with Martin Luther King (and refused to celebrate her birthday for many years because it fell on the day of his assassination). Critical verdict I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was one of the first works by an African-American woman to come to universal notice. In the last three decades she has approached ambassadorial status (writing poems for Clinton's inauguration and the UN's 50th birthday), and is adored for her ability to find hope in the most harrowing places.

Maya Angelou
Novelist, Poet Born Marguerite Johnson, Maya Angelou spent her formative years shuttling between St. Louis, Missouri, a tiny, totally segregated town in Arkansas, and San Francisco where she realized her ambition of becoming that city's first black streetcar conductor. During the 1950s, she studied dancing with Pearl Primus in New York, later appearing as a nightclub singer in New York and San Francisco. She worked as an editor for The Arab Observer , an English-language weekly published in Cairo; lived in Accra, Ghanna, where under the black nationalist regime of Kwame Nkrumah she taught music and drama; and studied cinematography in Sweden. She became a national celebrity in 1970 with the publication of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings , the first volume of her autobiography, which detailed her encounters with southern racism and a rape by her mother's lover.

"Jigging veins of rhyming mother wits."
That's how Christopher Marlowe described poetry
in his Prologue to Tamburlaine.
"Poetry is the opening and closing of a door,
leaving those who look through
to guess about what is seen
during a moment."
(Carl Sandburg) "Poetry is a comforting piece of fiction set to more or less lascivious music." (H.L. Mencken) When Webster's defines poetry it speaks in terms of rhythm, feelings, spirit. Like music, a good poem makes us think or feel something, sends out wispy reminders of something we've known or maybe just imagined. It is language of the soul.

Maya Angelou's journey takes her to director's chair
Web posted on: Friday, January 01, 1999 2:03:29 PM ATLANTA (CNN) When considering the accomplishments of Maya Angelou, the list of her credits is breathtaking: acclaimed poet, playwright, producer, professor; holder of 50 honorary degrees; speaker of seven languages; civil rights figure; unofficial adviser to presidents. So it isn't surprising that Angelou has added yet another accomplishment to her resume, directing her first feature-length film. "Down in the Delta" debuted nationwide on Christmas Day, starring Alfre Woodard as a single mom with a substance abuse problem who flees the city for a summer in the Mississippi Delta. It's the story of personal journey, a theme that Angelou holds dear. She is a woman who, at 70, has learned that the joy of life is in each step she takes. "I was thinking about that, about the journeys in the film, journey to the roots, journey to the heart," Angelou says. "We're all on journeys."

"What you looking at me for? I didn't come to stay......" I HADN'T so much forgot as I couldn't bring myself to remember. Other things were more important. "What you looking at me for? I didn't come to stay....." Whether I could remember the rest of the poem or not was immaterial. The truth of the statement was like a wadded-up handkerchief, sopping wet in my fists, and the sooner they accepted it the quicker I could let my hands open and the air would cool my palms. BIOGRAPHY - CRITICISM
Angelou's first work of literature, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings , is an autobiography. Angelou's sometimes disruptive life inspired her to write this book. It truly reflects the essence of her struggle to overcome the restrictions that were placed upon her in a hostile environment. Angelou writes with a twist of lyrical imagery along with a touch of realism. The title of this book is taken from the poem "sympathy" by the great black poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar. Sidonie Ann Smith praised Angelou, saying that, "like Richard Wright, she opens with a primal childhood scene that brings into focus the nature of the imprisoning environment from which the self will seek escape" (Smith 10). This work displays on impulse towards transcendence and is one of the most aesthetically satisfying autobiographies written by a black woman.
