ANDERIDA, an ancient Roman fort at Pevensey, near Eastbourne in Sussex (England), built about A.D. 300 as part of a scheme of land-defence against the Saxon pirates; repaired, probably by the great Stilicho, about A.D. 400; and after the Norman Conquest utilized by William the Conqueror for a Norman castle. Its massive Roman enceinte still stands but little damaged. ANDERNACH, a town of Germany, in the Prussian Rhine province, on the left bank of the Rhine, 10 m. N.W. of Coblenz by the main line to Cologne. Pop. (1900) 7889. Viewed from the river it makes a somewhat gloomy, though picturesque, impression, with its parish church (a basilica dating from the i2th century, with four towers), the round watch-tower on the Rhine, old walls in places 15 ft. thick, and a famous crane (erected 1554) for lading merchandise. Among other buildings are a Gothic Minorite church (now Protestant), a town hall, and a prison, formerly the castle of the archbishops of Cologne. Andernach has considerable industries, brewing and manufactures of chemicals and perfumes, and has also a trade in corn and wine. But its most notable article of commerce is that of mill-stones, made of lava and tufa-stone, a product much used by the Dutch in the construction of their dykes.

Hans Christian Andersen On one of his many journeys abroad - there were 30 in all - the Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75) was in 1854 as so often before in Germany and Italy, with a brief stay in Austria. The extremes in an incredible life appear here in sharp relief: the poor childhood home in the provincial town of Odense and the position as a European celebrity, courted by princes and kings. In an international perspective it might seem remarkable that the proletarian child Andersen, who in the course of his social progress had personally experienced the sharp divisions of the class society, made so much of his friendships in royal circles. Was he a snob? Or worse still, a traitor to his class? His friendships with princes and kings were established of course at a time when revolutions were sweeping through France and Germany, and when the bourgeois intelligentsia was in the process of gaining political power. But neither must we forget that other internationally renowned artists, such as the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen or the composers Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner (the first two were both friends of Andersen) were at home on the same luxurious surroundings. And finally it is necessary to realise that Andersen's Europe was not to any great extent that of royalty - it was the artists and the intellectuals who constituted his European circle of friends.

    About the Author
Hans Christian Andersen was born in the slums of Odense. His father was a shoemaker and literate. His mother, who worked as washerwoman, was uneducated and superstitious, but opened for his son the world of folklore. Andersen's half-sister worked as a prostitute for a time. Andersen received little education, and as a child he was highly emotional, suffering all kinds of fears and humiliations because of his tallness and effeminate interests. Andersen's hysterical attacks of cramps were falsely diagnosed as epileptic fits. Encouraged by his mother he composed his own fairy tales and arrange puppet theatre shows. In 1816 his father died and Andersen was forced to go to work. He was for a short time apprenticed to a weaver and tailor, and he also worked at a tobacco factory. Once his trousers were pulled down when other workers suspected that he was a girl. At the age of 14 Andersen moved to Copenhagen to start a career as a singer, dancer or an actor - he had a beautiful soprano voice. The following three years were full of hardships although he found supporters who paved his way to the theatre. Andersen succeeded in becoming associated with the Royal Theater, but he had to leave it when his voice began to change. When he was casually referred as a poet it changed his plans: "It went through me, body and soul, and tears filled my eyes. I knew that, from this very moment, my mind was awake to writing and poetry." He then began to write plays, all of which were rejected.
