Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen was born in Denmark on the 2nd of April 1805, into a poor family. Andersen very early showed signs of imaginative temperament, which was fostered by the indulgence and superstition of his parents. In 1816 his father died and he was left entirely to his own devices. Wishing to be an opera-singer, Andersen took matters into his own hands and started for Copenhagen in September 1819. There he was taken for a lunatic, snubbed at the theatres, and nearly reduced to starvation, but he was befriended by the musicians Christoph Weyse and Siboni, and afterwards by the poet Frederik Hoegh Guldberg (1771-1852). His voice failed, but he was admitted as a dancing student at the Royal Theatre. He grew idle, and lost the favor of Guldberg, but a new patron appeared in the person of Jonas Collin, the director of the Royal Theatre, who became Andersen's life-long friend. King Frederick VI was interested in the strange boy and sent him, free of charge, to the great grammar-school at Slagelse. Before he started for school he published his first volume, The Ghost at Palnatoke's Grave (1822). Andersen, a very backward and unwilling student, actually remained at Slagelse and at another school in Elsinore until 1827; these years, he says, were the darkest and bitterest in his life. Collin at length consented to consider him educated, and Andersen came to Copenhagen. In 1829 he made a considerable success with a fantastic volume entitled

A worldwide celebration
Hans Christian Andersen
Born April 2, 1805
Hans Christian Andersen 2005 is the worldwide celebration of the writer's bicentenary.
Taking place April 2 - December 6, 2005.
The purpose of "Hans Christian Andersen 2005" is to ensure that as many people as possible - both in Denmark and abroad - attain a greater and more nuanced familiarity with the writer. Through Hans Christian Andersen 2005, everyone can have access to comprehensive knowledge, information and insight into Hans Christian Andersen's works and the man himself, and the celebration offers an opportunity to take a closer look at Denmark's national storyteller and poet. It is worth considering whether the image of Hans Christian Andersen that has been established over the years has become too narrow and constrained in relation to what the man and his writings can and should communicate to us today. The idealised Hans Christian Andersen should give way to a full human portrait of the writer. He was a storyteller for children of all ages, but he was more than that. He was a critical journalist with great enthusiasm for science, an existential thinker, an observant travel book writer, a passionate novelist, a deft paper cut-out artist, a neurotic hypochondriac and a sex-fixated eccentric. He was a man with demons, dreams, yearnings and visions. He was a man of flesh and blood. Therefore, Hans Christian Andersen 2005 aims to be a broad, all-encompassing project that has room for both very large productions and projects with wide popular appeal and more marginal productions tailored toward particular target groups.

Hans Christian Andersen papercut, undated
Kept in the treasures of the Danish Royal library, this cut from Holger Laage-Petersen’s Andersen Collection shows motifs from the fairy tales. At the top Andersen wrote a verse: "Fra H. C. Andersens Sax / Sprang et Eventyr strax / Du Klipningen fik / Du er den milde Kritik!" (From H. C. Andersen’s shears / A fairy tale quick appears / The cutting’s for you / You judge kindly too!)

La heliko kaj la rozarbo
de Hans Christian ANDERSEN
esperantigis laÅ anglalingva traduko Donald J. HARLOW
"Ĉio estas tute same kiel pasintjare!
