Anderson's fairy tales were not meant merely for children but for adults as well. He has also written plays, novels and travelogues.
Hans Christian Andersen was born in the slums of Odense, Denmark. His father was a shoemaker and his mother worked as a washerwoman. Andersen received little early education, and as a child he was highly emotional, suffering all kinds of fears and humiliations because of his tallness and effeminate interests. Andersen's hysterical attacks of cramps were falsely diagnosed as epileptic fits.
In 1816 his father died and Andersen was forced to go to work. He was for a short time apprenticed to a weaver and tailor, and he also worked at a tobacco factory. At the age of 14 Andersen moved to Copenhagen to start a career as a singer, dancer or an actor - he had a beautiful soprano voice. The following three years were full of hardships although he found supporters who paved his way to the theatre. Andersen succeeded in becoming associated with the Royal Theater, but he had to leave it when his voice began to change.
In 1822 Jonas Collin, one of the directors of the Royal Theatre, gave Andersen a grant to enter the grammar school at Slagelse. Other pupils were much younger 11-year-olds, among whom the seventeen-year-old Andersen was definitely out of place. However, in 1828 gained admission to Copenhagen University, where he completed his education.

About the Author
Hans Christian Andersen was born in the slums of Odense. His father was a shoemaker and literate. His mother, who worked as washerwoman, was uneducated and superstitious, but opened for his son the world of folklore. Andersen's half-sister worked as a prostitute for a time. Andersen received little education, and as a child he was highly emotional, suffering all kinds of fears and humiliations because of his tallness and effeminate interests. Andersen's hysterical attacks of cramps were falsely diagnosed as epileptic fits. Encouraged by his mother he composed his own fairy tales and arrange puppet theatre shows. In 1816 his father died and Andersen was forced to go to work. He was for a short time apprenticed to a weaver and tailor, and he also worked at a tobacco factory. Once his trousers were pulled down when other workers suspected that he was a girl. When he was casually referred as a poet it changed his plans: "It went through me, body and soul, and tears filled my eyes. I knew that, from this very moment, my mind was awake to writing and poetry." He then began to write plays, all of which were rejected.

Hans Christian Andersen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Hans Christian Andersen April 2 August 4 ) was Danish author and poet famous for his fairy tales He was born at Odense , Denmark, on the April 2 . He was the son of a sickly young shoemaker of twenty-two and his several years older wife: the whole family lived and slept in one little room.
Upbringing
Hans Christian showed imagination early, which was fostered by the indulgence of his parents and by his mother's superstition. In the shoemaker died and the child was left entirely to his own devices. He ceased to go to school; he built himself a little toy-theatre and sat at home making clothes for his puppets, and reading all the plays that he could borrow; among them were those of Ludvig Holberg and William Shakespeare At Easter he was confirmed at the Saint Canute's Cathedral Odense , and began to turn his thoughts to the future. Andersen wished to be an opera-singer and so went to Copenhagen in September . There he was taken for a lunatic , snubbed at the theatres , and nearly reduced to starvation, but he was befriended by the musicians Christoph Weyse and Siboni , and afterwards by the poet Frederik Hoegh Guldberg ). HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN
Danish author (1805-1875)
Biography:
Hans Christian Andersen was born on April 1805 in Odense, Denmark. After his father's death in 1816 and her mother's remarriage, he left all alone to Copenhage to try his luck. But that was a failure. In 1822, thanks to the interest of a theatre manager called Jonas Collin, he got a scholarship which allows him to study. He began to publish in 1830. He visited France and Italy. In 1835 he published Fairy Tales, Told for Children , a successful compilation of tales which included Little Match Seller The Tinder Box Little Tiny or thumbeling The Little Mermaid The Princess and the Pea The Emperor's New Suit The Brave Tin Soldier The Snow Queen The Swineheard and The Ugly Duckling , among others.
Andersen also wrote travelogues ( Shadow Pictures from a Journey to the Harz Mountains and Saxon Switzerland , 1831), plays ( Love in Saint Nicholas Curch Tower , 1829)), poems ( Fantasies and Sketches , 1831) and novels ( The Improvisatore , 1835 and The Two Baronesses
Andersen and his tales:
Andersen's basic work, which gave him worlwide recognition, are his tales. He found his sources of inspiration in popular tales, taking his characters and plots from legends, history or everyday life. He wrote 164 tales meant not only for children but also for adults, because of their poetic imagination and the morals hiden in every tale. The "official" Andersen illustrators were two Danish artists chosen by him to illustrate the collected Danish editions of his stories. They were Lieutenant Wilhelm Pedersen (1820-1859) and Lorenz Frolich (1820-1908).

Movie Synopsis ACT ONE
Act One: The scene is an 1830s village square in Odense, Denmark. There we see a schoolhouse, a town hall, and the cobbler shop of Hans Christian Andersen. Nearby stands a two-wheeled cart, which is large enough to hold all his equipment, and a smaller cart that can be pushed by a young boy. In “I’m Hans Christian Andersen” he introduces himself as a world-class storyteller, who will, “mend your shoes and fix your boots when I have a moment free.” The towns’ children gather round him. At the end of the song, Hans leads them around the stage a la the Pied Piper, ending up in front of his shop for story time.
The schoolmaster rings the bell to announce the beginning of school—the children gather closer to Hans. He rings it again and the children continue to ignore him. In a rage, this dry, angry, apoplectic little man returns to the schoolhouse, puts the bell on his desk, picks up his hat and storms into Town Hall.
Hans begins work on a shoe, and Peter, whom Hans rescued from an orphanage, is worried sick about losing Hans. Hans criticizes Peter’s handiwork and wonders if Peter really wants to be a cobbler. In the background, the children sing a repetitive, rote recital of their addition tables and Hans picks a marigold and point out an inchworm worrying away: he sings “Inchworm, Inchworm, measuring the marigolds, seems to me you’d stop and see how beautiful you are.” Hans crosses to the schoolhouse as Peter continues singing. The schoolmaster shuts the door in his face. Hans determines to leave the town. Peter is elated to find that Hans will take him along. They load the large cart and post a sign in the shop window that he’s gone to Copenhagen. They reprise “Hans Christian Andersen” as the scene becomes the wonderful seaside town of Copenhagen.

Then he gathers a large handful of flowers, which he carries up to the Almighty, that they may bloom more brightly in heaven than they do on earth. And the Almighty presses the flowers to His heart, but He kisses the flower that pleases Him best, and it receives a voice, and is able to join the song of the chorus of bliss." These words were spoken by an angel of God, as he carried a dead child up to heaven, and the child listened as if in a dream. Then they passed over well-known spots, where the little one had often played, and through beautiful gardens full of lovely flowers.

Andersen used frequently colloquial style that disguises the sophisticated moral teachings of his tales. Before achieving success as a playwright and novelist, Andersen was trained as singer and actor. Many of Andersen's fairy tales depict characters who gain happiness in life after suffering and conflicts. 'The Ugly Duckling' and 'The Little Mermaid' are Andersen's most intimate works. " He now felt glad at having suffered sorrow and trouble, because it enabled him to enjoy so much better all the pleasure and happiness around him; for the great swans swam round the new-comer, and stroked his neck with their beaks, as a welcome." (from 'The Ugly Duckling') Hans Christian Andersen was born in the slums of Odense. His father, Hans Andersen, was a poor shoemaker and literate, who believed he was of aristocratic origin. Andersen's mother, Anne Marie Andersdatter, worked as washerwoman. Although she was uneducated and superstitious, she opened for his son the world of folklore. Later Andersen depicted her in his novels and in the story 'Hun duede ikke'. Anne Marie declined into alcoholism and died in 1833 in a charitable old people's home. Andersen's half-sister Karen Marie may have worked as a prostitute for a time; she contacted her famous brother only a few times before dying in 1846.

Below is the complete list of Andersen’s 168 tales, in the chronological order of their original publication. Title variations and Danish equivalents may be found in the cross reference Andersen’s tale “ Danish Popular Legends ” was first published in The Riverside Magazine for Young People , Vol. IV, pp. 470-474, New York, October 1870. It has never been published in Denmark. The hypertext is based on an etext found in the Andersen Homepage of the Danish National Literary Archive. It may be somewhat surprising to learn that a number of Andersen’s tales were published in America even before being published in Andersen’s native Denmark. According to Jean Hersholt’s introduction to The Andersen-Scudder Letters , University of California Press, 1949, ten tales were published by Horace Elisha Scudder, Andersen’s American editor, publisher and translator, in the above mentioned Magazine , in the years 1868-1870.
