Five years a widow and in control of her fortune and her estate, Louisa revels in the freedom of riding the open rolling hills of her estate and living as she chooses. Unfortunately, men frequently seek her hand in quest of making her beauty and wealth their own. So when she decides to come to the aid of her young niece Elsbeth in securing a match made for love and not for fortune, Louisa must conceal her own identity. She assumes the identity of her elderly aunt, the Dowager Duchess of Roth, and escorts Elsbeth to London for her Season. Just before her departure for London, Louisa receives Lord Devon Stanton. They have not seen one another since they were children, and he is immediately captivated with the young widow. A slight accident in the library detains Devon overnight for his health, and he's immensely sorry to learn that Louisa departs for London the following morning before he can see her again. Devon follows her to London, where he encounters grave difficultly locating her. Devon does not know that he holds the power to ruin Louisa. THE DOWAGER DUCHESS is an outrageously good read with unexpected twists and delights that cannot help but charm readers. This colorful cast of characters proves to be highly entertaining with a sharp contrast between the parasites and the sincere. Indeed, author Joye Ames displays a remarkable gift for capturing the flavor of the regency era while defying conventions. Louisa's determination to maintain control of her life is greatly challenged by Devon's presence, making her long for things she never before dreamed possible. Devon's attitudes are not particularly circumspect, providing surprising room for his character to grow and change as well. A secondary love story between Elsbeth and Louisa's parasitical nephew lends the tale additional depth and complexity. Save Your Heart For Me: An Avalon Romance by Joye Ames, August 2000, Contemporary Romance Grade: F Sensuality: Kisses You've heard the expression, "Oh, it was nothing!" Well, now it comes in book form. I do not get it. This book is the most nothing I have ever read. There is nothing to it. No story. No plot. No character development. Nothing . It's a mere 50,000 words (half the size of a series romance), and they want $18.95 for it. The audacity! Carson Myszkowski (this is the heroine by the way) and Alex Langston were teenage friends. Alex moved away. Carson stayed in the thriving metropolis of Seven Springs, Tennessee to become a school teacher. One day, Alex returns during the re-enactment of a Civil War incident in which a local Southern woman secretly loved a Union officer. It's called The Butcher's Roost affair, or some such - it made no sense and started the book off on the wrong foot (there was no right foot, but that's another matter). Okay, so why has affluent software developer Alex returned to his roots? Ostensibly to fix up his late grandmother's house so he can get married and live there, but really because he loved and still loves Carson. Carson is completely unaware of Alex's love for her. This is all in chapter one. During the remainder of the book, Carson wonders: I wonder if Alex loves me? Alex spends the entire book thinking: I love Carson. I wonder if she loves me? They ask their friends: Do you think Alex loves me? I wonder if Carson loves me; what do you think? It's junior high school all over again. Not to be a spoiler, but the ending comes when Alex says: I love you, Carson and Carson says: You do? Gosh! The end.
