One of the best WWII diaries World War II is still turning up troves of fresh material, and here is a good example. This journal covering the European campaign from D-Day to the surrender of Germany is not only fresh but a pleasure to read. Pogue was one of the outstanding historians of World War II, author of the definitive biography of George Marshall and of The Supreme Command, an account of Eisenhower's leadership. Raw diaries contain stretches of boring material, and this is no exception ('Topete and I went to Aywaille to see 1st Division people. The 16th Regiment had moved up near Aachen to go into the line. Then went to 1st Division (rear)...'). Fortunately, Pogue later set out to flesh out his entries into a publishable memoir, a task ninety percent accomplished at his death in 1996. A Sorbonne graduate in history, Pogue was teaching college in Kentucky when drafted after Pearl Harbor. With its usual acumen, the army made him a clerk where his PhD skills were employed in 'calling the roll of recruits when there was an unusual number of foreign names....' It was early 1944 when he finally transferred to Washington to join the Army Ground Forces historical section. Readers may be surprised to learn that the U.S. army in WWII employed historians in all major commands. For their benefit, units in the field were ordered to render periodic after-action reports and preserve important documents. While the object was to learn battle lessons, the result was a flood of priceless historical material that is still being mined. This required historians to follow on the heels of combat units, interviewing participants as the fighting proceeded.

- Book Review, by Ambrose, Stephen E.

Witness to America, a marvelous anthology of eyewitness accounts to key events in American history, opens with an act of rebellion: the Boston Tea Party of November 1773, when American tax resisters dressed as Mohawk Indians boarded a British vessel and dumped its cargo of tea overboard to protest a newly imposed duty on the much-used stimulant. It closes with another act of rebellion: the attempted impeachment of President William Jefferson Clinton, the long-sought dream of the makers of the so-called Republican Revolution of 1994. The first was reported by a participant, George Hewes, the second by a journalist, Michael Kinsley; but both acts reveal much about the values of the nation with the passage of time, and both documents will be of value to anyone seeking to understand America's political history now and in the future. Editors Stephen E. Ambrose and Douglas Brinkley, who are among the best-known American historians working today, understand the importance of such firsthand accounts to chroniclers of the past. They also understand that for too many Americans, "the word history implies an arid pedantry associated with dusty libraries and musty monographs." They've chosen the documents in this first-rate anthology with an eye to proving that history need not be dull, and the selections tell much that the standard textbooks do not, whether it be the mule-meat-and-bad-bean diet of the Confederates besieged at Vicksburg or the cold-war ravings of Beat Generation patron saint Jack Kerouac. At once entertaining and highly instructive, this book belongs in every history buff's library. Gregory McNamee

Long before he entered politics, when he was just in his early 20s, South Dakotan George McGovern flew 35 bomber missions over Nazi-occupied Europe, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery under fire. Stephen Ambrose, the industrious historian, focuses on McGovern and the young crew of his B-24 bomber, volunteers all, in this vivid study of the air war in Europe. Manufactured by a consortium of companies that included Ford Motor and Douglas Aircraft, the B-24 bomber, dubbed the Liberator, was designed to drop high explosives on enemy positions well behind the front linesand especially on the German capital, Berlin. Unheated, drafty, and only lightly armored, the planes were dangerous places to be, and indeed, only 50 percent of their crews survived to the war's end. Dangerous or not, they did their job, delivering thousand- pound bombs to targets deep within Germany and Austria. In his fast-paced narrative, Ambrose follows many other flyers (including the Tuskegee Airmen, the African American pilots who gave the B-24s essential fighter support on some of their most dangerous missions) as they brave the long odds against them, facing moments of glory and terror alike. "It would be an exaggeration to say that the B-24 won the war for the Allies," Ambrose writes. "But don't ask how they could have won the war without it." Gregory McNamee
