Amado's books mixed a love of life with sharp humour
Brazil's most famous author Jorge Amado, whose books helped shape the outside world's view of his homeland, has died aged 88. Amado, whose works have been translated into 48 languages and sold more than 20 million copies, died of a heart attack in the north-eastern city of Salvador, the setting for many of his best-loved novels. Works like Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands and the Violent Land made Amado a regular candidate for a Nobel prize for literature, though he never won. Exiled for his left-wing views as a young man, he became a Brazilian icon in his later life. The Portuguese writer Jose Saramago, who won the prize in 1998, said of Amado's death: "In Brazil I think this is a cause for national mourning ... He is no longer here, but his books are".
I continue to firmly believe in changing the world and I believe literature has a huge importance
Jorge Amado Humour Amado's writing mixed a love of 'o povo', the common people in his home state of Bahia, with a sometimes outrageous sense of humour.

Jorge Amado: Becoming Bahain in Brazil
Joyce Gregory Wyels JAILED, EXILED, WIDELY TRAVELED, at home in Paris and Prague, writer-in-residence in Pennsylvania, Jorge Amado may be Brazil's most peripatetic as well as its most prolific writer. But whether penning his acclaimed literary works in London or in Rio de Janeiro, Amado invariably returns to Bahia, the land of his birth, for his characters, settings, and inspiration.
Amado's sensuous stories plunge the reader into the Bahian soul of Brazil in Salvador, into the frontier town of Ilhéus in the 1920s, and into the conflicttorn cacao plantations of southern Bahia. There, Amado writes in a foreword to The Violent Land, "I saw the end of those struggles; I could say that I was born amidst them, was nourished on them, and that they made me a novelist."
With a seven-hour bus ride ahead of me, I have plenty of time to reflect on the larger-than-life characters that people both Amado's native state and his novels. My friend Francie and I are on our way to Ilhéus, the boyhood home of Amado and the setting for Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon, his first international triumph.
Truth be told, the sign on the front of our bus reads not Ilhéus but Itabuna. However, as we discovered after we'd packed our bags, given up our room in Pousada Ambar, and arrived at the Salvador Rodoviaria, the bus to Ilhéus was full. The clerk, therefore, has routed us to Itabuna, a destination that appears on no tourist map. We take it on faith that the string of little towns we're passing through-Cruz das Almas, San Antonio de Jesus, Gandú-will lead us to Itabuna and thence Ilhéus, towns presented as neighbors in both Gabriela and The Violent Land. Besides, so far in our trip the people of Bahia have been unfailingly friendly and helpful, bus clerks no less than shopkeepers, vendors, taxi drivers, and fellow beach-goers.
