J orge Amado is the greatest novelist in Brazil. His works convey the essence and colour of Bahia, with a profound knowledge of the Brazilian soul. Besides Tieta do Agreste , he has created a number of powerful female characters such as Gabriela and Dona Flor, the adaptations of which brought Sonia Braga her first success.
T ieta do Agreste displays his close awareness of the reality of the Bahian interior: people struggling to survive, defending or resisting prejudices while struggling to attain meagre ambitions. The book builds a vivid picture of the provincial conflicts which precede the arrival of signs of progress and its consequences.
J orge Amado gave his full blessing to the enterprise, even appearing at the beginning of the film reading the book's first paragraph and at the end his voice returns to read the last line. He left director Diegues completely free to adapt the novel as he saw fit, saying "You didn't interfere in my book and I won't interfere in your film."
T he most translated contemporary Brazilian author, the list of Jorge Amado's books adapted for the cinema, TV and theatre is long, including Tenda dos Milagres Jubiaba Dona Flor e seus dois maridos and Gabriela

"Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands"
Here's a twist for me, I saw the video of Dona Flor before I ever heard of this author or read this book. I got a big kick out of it, even though it seemed on the low tech side of film making. Naturally when I later discovered this writer (through Shepherds of the Night ) I was more impressed with the book than the movie. (Like who's surprised by that?) Dona Flor, a cooking instructor, finds herself widowed after her roguish husband drops dead at Carnival. For her second marriage she finds a nice man with a good job as a pharmacist. But as content as she is to be with such a considerate husband, she longs for her first husband's sensual pleasures - so powerful this longing that he comes back as a ghost making an interesting menage a trois. It's a good humored story. (Reviewed 2-10-98) Amazon readers' rating: from 8 reviews

Amado in Portuguese means loved one, beloved. Jorge Amado, Brazil's best-known novelist, whose books have been translated in more than 30 languages, has had his share of worldwide love and appreciation. Since 1984, for example, he is a member of France's Legion of Honor. In this article, Brazilian literature professor Janer Cristaldo looks at a less than flattering side of the prolific author and accuses him of selling his own soul for literary fame and petty personal gains.
    Bahia's Dr. Faustus
    Janer Cristaldo
The word "bordel" (brothel), for those who don't know, was born in Paris. During the time in which the "maisons closes" were at the bank of the Seine, when someone went in search of women, they would euphemistically say: "J'vais au bord'elle" (I am going to its bank). The Seine is not "un fleuve," but "une rivière." In other words, it is a feminine word, la Seine. Therefore, when someone said "au bord'elle" he meant "au bord de la Seine". From there, bordel (brothel). It is not surprising then that the capital that invented this word decided to pay homage during the recent 18th Salon du Livre de Paris (Paris Book Fair) to the greatest prostitute of contemporary literature. Brazil was honored in the Salon and had as honoring guest and representative of our literature, Jorge Amado. Brazil's best selling author, Amado began his career as a messenger of Nazism and continued as an agent of Stalinism and today is Roberto Marinho's (TV Globo network all-powerful owner) officious scriptwriter. Amado also received the title of Dr. Honoris Causa by Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris III. Nothing to be surprised about. The Parisians, long known for their collaborationism and Stalinist tradition, wouldn't miss the opportunity to honor, in this end of century, the colleague who since his youth fought on the same side.

Brazilian author Jorge Amado dead at 88
Jorge Amado By staff and wire reports RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil Jorge Amado, Brazil's best-selling author, died Monday, family members said. He would have reached his 89th birthday Wednesday. Amado, who had been ill for several years, died of heart and lung failure at 7:30 p.m. at the Alianca Hospital in the northeastern city of Salvador da Bahia. Born in the state of Bahia, Amado has sold more books than any other Brazilian writer, with 44 novels, some of which have been translated into more than 40 languages. One of them, "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands," was made into a popular movie. Amado was a perennial front-runner for the Nobel Prize and Brazil's best-selling author both at home and abroad, with 20 million volumes sold worldwide in nearly 50 languages. Amado was born in 1912 in the small town of Itabuna and began writing at 15 as a cub reporter covering the Salvador morgue, moving in a crowd of what he recalls were Bohemian artists and poets and publishing his first work at 19.
