Grandson of Hugh Allingham of Fermanagh, son of Son of Hugh Allingham, (#7979) was born around 1660. See his father's family for more information All of the Allinghams of County Fermanagh, Ireland are collected for convenience under this common ancestor. An effort has been made to preserve syncronicity of generations in all of the Ireland reports, so a number of dummy ancestors have been inserted at the start of the county pages. It seems very likely that the parent of this individual is actually the first Edward Allingham of Ballyshannon, and that all of the Fermanagh Allinghams are descended from him. Where dates are unknown, 25 years are estimated between parents and children. Lacking other information, deed grantors are guessed to be about age 50; grantees about age 25. Marriages are guessed to occur around age 25. Grandson of Hugh Allingham of Fermanagh had the following child:

Now Autumn's fire burns slowly along the woods,
And day by day the dead leaves fall and melt,
And night by night the monitory blast
Wails in the key-hole, telling how it pass'd
O'er empty fields, or upland solitudes, Or grim wide wave; and now the power is felt Of melancholy, tenderer in its moods Than any joy indulgent Summer dealt. Day and Night SongsAutumnal Sonnet Autumn Till glowworms light owl-watchmen's flight Through our green metropolis. To remember for years - To remember with tears! William Allingham is known for his sonnets. Here is one of his sonnets about spring. In a Spring Grove Here the white-ray'd anemone is born, Wood-sorrel, and the varnish'd buttercup; And primrose in its purfled green swathed up, Pallid and sweet round every budding thorn, Gray ash, and beech with rusty leaves outworn. Here, too the darting linnet hath her nest In the blue-lustred holly, never shorn, Whose partner cheers her little brooding breast, Piping from some near bough. O simple song! O cistern deep of that harmonious rillet, And these fair juicy stems that climb and throng The vernal world, and unexhausted seas Of flowing life, and soul that asks to fill it, Each and all of these, and more, and more than these!

    Samuel Butler (1835)
Erewhon , (the title is the word "nowhere" spelled backwards) in 1871. Erewhon , at first published anonymously, made Butler's reputation. In it he skewered the churches, but also attacked the theory of evolution, chiefly because Butler felt Darwin had not given his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, enough credit. There followed brilliantly witty satirical works, such as The Fair Haven (1873) and his criticism of Victorian society, The Way of All Flesh (1903). Butler also translated the classical Greek Iliad and Odyssey. In his works he scarcely disguised his criticisms of Christianity, although he held the belief that there was an impersonal mind or purpose directing the universe. He once said, "An honest God's the noblest work of man," spoofing Alexander Pope's line, "An honest man's the noblest work of God." And in an essay called "Unprofessional Sermons" from his Note-Books , Butler wrote, "Prayers are to men as dolls are to children. They are not without use and comfort, but it is not easy to take them very seriously." Samuel Butler (not to be confused with the Samuel Butler who wrote the satirical poem "Hudibras") died on 18 June 1902. In

Archived: July 31, 2000 Interview with WILLIAM ALLINGHAM
This is part of a series of interviews with current field managers of cosmic baseball teams. William Allingham , field manager of the Pre-Raphaelite Baseball Club (Underleague), is an Irish poet and diarist frequently associated with the London-based Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of the 19th century. Allingham first joined the Cosmic Baseball Association
in 1983 when he was drafted as a pitcher by the Eden Bohemians , the Cosmic Baseball Association 's team of interesting writers. Allingham pitched for 5 seasons compiling a career 49-50 won-lost record and a 3.72 earned run average (ERA). His best season was 1986. He won his team's "Most Cosmic Player" award that season on the strength of his 15-9 record and 2.89 ERA. ( Allingham Cosmic Pitching Record ). The Bohemians deactivated Allingham after the 1987 season. Ten years later when the Pre-Raphaelite Baseball Club joined the Cosmic Baseball Association , Allingham was tapped to be the team's field manager. In three complete seasons (1997-1999) Allingham has distinguished himself as a shrewd skipper compiling a 272-214 won-loss record and leading his team to a victory in the 1999 Cosmic Universal Series This interview took place on June 28, 2000 in Allingham's office before his team played a night game against the visiting
