Excerpt from
Three Poems About Miriam
The trick is to catch her
at the moment she says what a cute baby,
to make the rest of the way easier.
You like it? It’s yours, at no
extra effort on your part.
For the slightest of fees we
provide the child care, keep
the kid out of your hair
those times when he can be a pain.
I cannot explain
the way I knew it then, the spell of transforming my doomed brother into Prince of Egypt even before I was given a name. Karen Alkalay-Gut's Home Page

Taking out the Trash by Karen Alkalay-Gut ( gut22@post.tau.ac.il I tell my crazy neighbor how I was as a child how I too had fights with my mother jut like her child's classhes with her. We meet by the trash bin as she tries to expel the outcome of the daughter's annual visit when the screaming in her kitchen was no longer only her own maniacal voices. "Didn't you respect your parents?" she asks in that wondering tone I know from children and inmates. And I admit I just couldn't get along with them. She thinks I am being noble, as usual, humoring her and my mother at the same time. Then she suspects I have heard her ranting to the walls in three part disharmony. For a moment she looks at me sidelong, then her shining, mad, toothless smile returns, and she is grateful for my comfort no matter which stories I tell. She leaves for her walk, almost blithely, trailing the absurd cart she is never without. I go back upstairs, moved, dissatisfied. I never like to her - it would be like lying to my diary, my secret self, my portrait in the attic Early Encounters with an Analyst I "I've given you

Oblivion may be a justifiable fate for many works, but in this case it serves only to prove the obscurity into which the author of one of the most famous children’s works even written has remained. Were Webster a one-book-author with an undistinguished biography, this obscurity might be justified, but the vibrancy of her other books and the paradigmatic nature of her colorful life makes the lack of biographical attention at best puzzling. Huckleberry Finn and General Ulysses S. Grant’s Personal Memoirs Mark Twain: Businessman . The rest of her life, in many ways, exhibited a protest against patriarchal authority, authoritative systems and authoritative individuals, and an examination of alternatives to destructive authoritative systems is her constant concern in almost every aspect of her life and writing. Just Patty Daddy Long-Legs , believed with Webster in the need for social reform (they were the only socialists in their class) and the possibility of women enacting this reform.

KAREN ALKALAY-GUT -
THOMAS UNGAR, who managed the computer laboratory of the School of Mathematics at Tel Aviv University until his untimely death in 1997, had written a great deal of poetry in Czech before he began to sit in on my classes on Women's Poetry. Under the influence of Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton and some of my own poems, he began to write about himself, and about the inner world. When he became ill with a virulent cancer, he found this discovery useful and comforting – "I'll write a sonnet a day," he said, "and it will be like an apple keeping the doctor away." He would e-mail me these sonnets and I would comment, absurdly, trivially, but knowing that he just needed to know I was reading him in order for him to grasp each time a greater and greater control over a more and more uncontrollable situation. After he died, I wrote a poem to him, and discovered his influence on me was much greater than mine on him.

INTERVIEW WITH KAREN ALKALAY-GUT
BY AUGUST HIGHLAND AUGUST HIGHLAND:
You were born in London. How old were you when you moved from London to the USA? Why did you move to the states? Where did you live in the US? What did you do while you were here? KAREN ALKALAY-GUT:
AH: When did you move to Tel Aviv? What university are you teaching at in Tel Aviv? KAG: I was 26 when I moved to Israel - and I thought I could be helpful in building a new and peaceful society… I teach at Tel Aviv University. AH: When I read your work I am impressed by these elements: your sexual identity, your jewish identity, your sensitivity to the inter-relationship of all living beings, your intimate relationship with death as though you and death well-acquainted and that death was more afraid of you than you were of death. Are any of my impressions close to the mark? As for Jewish culture - I am very Jewish, but most of the cultures I've encountered and most of the peoples I've met excite me. Sound like too vast a subject? Let me narrow it down. Take dance for example. I've never seen or danced a dance I didn't like: belly dancing, waltz, hora, samba, trance. And sex, well sex is an incredible miracle. And it demands and increases the sensitivity to inter-relationships.
