Dante Alighieri
Italian poet, born at Florence, 1265; died at Ravenna, Italy , 14 September, 1321. His own statement in the "Paradiso" (xxii, 112-117) that he was born when the sun was in Gemini, fixes his birthday between 18 May and 17 June. He was the son of Alighiero di Bellincione Alighieri, a notary belonging to an ancient but decadent Guelph family, by his first wife, Bella, who was possibly a daughter of Durante di Scolaio Abati, a Ghibelline noble. A few months after the poet's birth, the victory of Charles of Anjou over King Manfred at Benevento (26 February, 1266) ended the power of the empire in Italy, placed a French dynasty upon the throne of Naples, and secured the predominance of the Guelphs in Tuscany. Dante thus grew up amidst the triumphs of the Florentine democracy, in which he took some share fighting in the front rank of the Guelph cavalry at the battle of Campaldino (11 June, 1289), when the Tuscan Ghibellines were defeated by the forces of the Guelph league, of which Florence was the head. This victory was followed by a reformation of the Florentine constitution, associated with the name of Giano della Bella, a great-hearted noble who had joined the people. By the Ordinances of Justice (1293) all nobles and magnates were more strictly excluded from the government, and subjected to severe penalties for offences against plebeians. To take any part in public life, it was necessary to be enrolled in one or other of the "Arts" (the guilds in which the burghers and artisans were banded together), and accordingly Dante matriculated in the guild of physicians and apothecaries. On 6 July, 1295, he spoke in the General Council of the Commune in favour of some modification in the Ordinances of Justice after which his name is frequently found recorded as speaking or voting in the various councils of the republic.

Dante's Inferno

Dante Alighieri, called Dante, wrote the poetic masterpiece La Divina Commedia , or The Divine Comedy , which helped establish his native Tuscan dialect as the literary language of Italy. He is not only Italy's preeminent poet but, along with Shakespeare , one of the towering figures of Western literature. This primacy is accorded him because of his profound understanding of medieval thought, his mastery of complex technical skills, and the dramatic range and originality of his imagination. Dante's life spanned the troubled years of the late Middle Ages, in which the long struggle between pope and emperor for supremacy in Italy reached its most acute phase, and in which the concept of nationalism, exemplified by the growing power of the French monarchy, was displacing the medieval vision of a united Christendom. Deeply involved in the issues and events of his day, Dante reflected in his writings the aspirations and anxieties of his contemporaries, while projecting into them a universal and timeless dimension.
Of a middle-class Florentine family with some pretensions to ancient nobility, Dante received a good education both in the classics and in scholastic Christian literature. At a very early age he began to write poetry, largely love lyrics (canzoni) in the style of Guido Guinizelli and Guido Cavalcanti. The most memorable events of his youth were his two encounters (1274 and 1283) with Beatrice Portinari, to whom he remained spiritually devoted for the rest of his life in a metaphysical transformation of the tradition of courtly love popularized by the Provencal troubadours despite his own marriage (c. 1285) to Gemma Donati (which produced several children) and Beatrice's to Simon de'Bardi. The progression of his love for her was embodied in the love poetry of his first book

About the Author
The greatest Italian poet and one of the most important writers of European literature. Dante is best known for the epic poem Commedia , c. 1310-14, later named La Divinia Commedia . It has profoundly affected not only the religious imagination but all subsequent allegorical creation of imaginary worlds in literature. Dante was born into a Florentine family of noble ancestry. Little is known about Dante's childhood exept what he himself have revealed. Dante's mother died when he was a child and his father died before the future poet reached manhood. He was thoroughly educated in both classical and Christian literature. At the age of 12 he was promised to his future wife, although he had already fallen in love with another girl whom he called Beatrice. By the time Dante was 18, he had already become interested in writing verse, sending an early sonnet to the poet Guido Cavalcanti. This started their friendship. Dante also dedicated his first book to Cavalcanti . The work, La Vita Nuova (1292), celebrated Dante's love for Beatrice. The nature of his love had its roots in the medieval concept of "courtly love" and the idealization of women.

is generally considered the greatest of Italian poets, and also one of the greatest poets that Western civilization has produced. His reputation is primarily based upon his magnum opus The Divine Comedy . He was active in politics during the early part of his life and took an active interest in church reform.
Dante was born in Florence, Italy, in 1265. Heir of a poor but noble family, he was one of the seven elected officials in charge of the government of Florence. Civil war was common in Florence at the time and the issues were further complicated by the question of Papal influence. In 1300, Dante along with his fellow magistrates confirmed anti-papal measures. When in 1302, the French prince acting under orders from the Pope captured power in Florence, Dante was sentenced on charges of corruption and opposition to the Church and exiled from Florence on pain of execution by burning if he ever returned.. He spent the rest of his life in exile, pining for his native city. He withdrew from active politics to a large extent and concentrated on his literary creations.
His first book was the Vita Nuova The New Life ), published in 1294, in which he relates how he fell in love with a young girl Beatrice. Though Beatrice and Dante both married other people, Dante's spiritual love for her persists and she functions as his chief Muse and inspiration.. In 1304 or shortly thereafter he published

Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag Autorenportrait Alighieri Dante

Dante Alighieri (1265 - 1321)
Born Durante Alighieri in Florence in 1265 to an aristocratic, but not wealthy, family associated with the guelph party (the political party in favor of the Pope instead of the Emperor). Dante himself eventually became a bianchi guelph, supporting the Emperor's politics instead of the Pope's. Around 1285, he married Gemma di Manetto Donati and the couple had several children.
Dante was a student of rhetoric, philosophy, grammar, literature and religion. As a young man, Dante was a formative part of the (Stilnovo) movement of poetics. After the death of his beloved Bice di Folco Portinari (who appears in Dante's work several times as "Beatrice"), Dante turned all of his energy to studying philosophy and religion. His first book, the Vita Nuova , blended verse and prose in honor of Beatrice, the married woman he had loved since the age of 9.
He also undertook a political career, becoming a priore in 1300. But Dante's association with the white guelphi resulted in political strife. Dante took a hard-line against one of Pope Boniface VIII's political plans...and when his side lost, Dante was fined and sentenced to two years of exile. Dante refused to pay the fine and was therefore sentenced to death.
