Nelson Algren biography
Nelson Algren earned a reputation as a street-smart writer. His books and short stories, often about the downtrodden and forgotten of society, were filled with vivid description and haunting dialogue.
To those who knew his work, Nelson Algren was one of the most authentic writers of the 20th century. He wrote things as he saw and heard them, often including dialogue between his characters that sounded authentic enough to have originated in any seedy tavern. He was talented, however, and the late newspaper columnist Mike Royko wrote that Algren's short stories were some of the finest written by anyone in America. Though he made his name in Chicago, Algren was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1909. He managed to graduate from the University of Illinois in 1931 with a journalism degree. Unable to land a job, he began hopping freight trains and hitching rides, making money at odd jobs along the way. Legend had him stealing a typewriter during one of his journies so that he could write. His experiences with down-on-their-luck people often reared their head in his writing. Algren's first two books were published in Chicago to little fanfare. bodyOffer(27030) The book which put Algren on the map was his 1950 Novel "The Man With A Golden Arm". It won him acclaim and garnered him the National Book Award for fiction that same year. Nevertheless, when it came time to make the book into a movie, Algren received a pittance for the rights, while the movie itself was a smash hit, featuring Frank Sinatra.

A Walk on the Wild Side
Author Info: Nelson Algren
Guest review by Zach Barnett Orrinís review of The Man with the Golden Arm has gotten me to ask the question, "Must I agree with the authorís politics to appreciate and value his or her writing?" But then I approach the stairwell of this speculation and find the Brothersjudd founder asleep with a die in his ear and I remember I live down the street in the house with the doors and windows. So, letís then take another look at Algren and his writing. First, whether you agree with a damn thing Algren says, you canít help but be blown away by his craft. His writing is a thing of raw, naked power. Having invested nights and nights in the back of a Chicago precinct listening to the patter of lies, confessions and delusions of the usual suspects, Algrenís dialogue is a sweet and exacting science. There is a fight going on and he is the referee, and someone is being bloodied and he is not going to blow the whistle, not going to interfere, and you are waiting and thinking, "break it up ? why wonít you break it up?" And then you look down and find your wallet is gone and youíve been cut ? badly ? and it is your blood on the barroom floor. Neon Wilderness , his collection of short stories, is a testament to the development of this approach. And whereas Orrinís take on

B C-D E ... T-Z 780. ADLER, KATHERINE KEITH. The Crystal Icicle, [by] Katherine Keith. New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, [1930.] 287p. A love triangle develops as Hal Muir realizes that Nancy, his wife of seven years, is frigid; but that Joan Peal, who works for the same newspaper as he, isn't. Troubled by his desires, he confesses to Nancy, who resorts to hysteria and threatens to leave him. As tensions mount, the affair begins to wear itself out, and Hal settles down contentedly with Nancy, who at just the proper moment, has become pregnant. Mrs. Adler's basic theme is somewhat overworked, but her style, her choice of words, and her characterization are impeccable. Although no locale is mentioned by nature, descriptions of Chicago's downtown area, the Gothic arches of the Tribune Tower, and the Muir's farm home on the prairie are so graphic that they leave no question of an Illinois setting. Book Review Digest, 1930, p. 570.
