Her suffering ended with the day,
Yet lived she at its close,
And breathed the long, long night away
In statue-like repose. A Death-Bed. James Aldrich But when the sun in all his state
Illumed the eastern skies,
She passed through Glory's morning-gate,
And walked in Paradise. A Death-Bed. James Aldrich Somewherein desolate wind-swept space
In Twilight-landin No-man's land Two hurrying Shapes met face to face, And bade each other stand.

England
While men pay reverence to mighty things,
They must revere thee, thou blue-cinctured isle
Of Englandnot to-day, but this long while
In front of nations, Mother of great kings,
Soldiers, and poets. Round thee the sea flings
His steel-bright arm, and shields thee from the guile
And hurt of France. Secure, with august smile,
Thou sittest, and the East its tribute brings.
Some say thy old-time power is on the wane,
Thy moon of grandeur, filled, contracts at length
They see it darkening down from less to less.
Let but a hostile hand make threat again,
And they shall see thee in thy ancient strength,
Each iron sinew quivering, lioness!
Egypt
Fantastic Sleep is busy with my eyes:
I seem in some waste solitude to stand
Once ruled of Cheops: upon either hand
A dark illimitable desert lies

Click to read "Old Town by the Sea" Mark Twain attended the memorial ceremony for Portsmouth's Thomas Bailey Aldrich at the Music Hall in 1908. Aldrich's novel " Story of a Bad Boy ," Twain said, was his inspiration for Tom Sawyer. That's how famous Aldrich was in his time. Today his many novels and volumes of romantic poetry go largely unread, even in his hometown of Portsmouth, NH. His reputation hangs largely on his breakthrough book "Story of a Bad Boy" about his Portsmouth childhood. It is still in print, though no threat to "Huckleberry Finn." But there's more to Aldrich worth reading; his out-of-print guide to Portsmouth bears a second look. Published in 1883, "An Old Town by the Sea," is an evocative literary picture of this region at the end of the 19th century. The Story of a Good Man Both the Bailey and Aldrich families , from which he was descended, could trace their roots back to colonial America. "I could boast of a long line of ancestors, but won't." Aldrich once wrote. "They are of no possible benefit to me, save it is pleasant to think that none of them were hanged for criminals or shot for traitors."

    The Thomas Bailey Aldrich Memorial
Thomas Bailey Aldrich was born in 1836 in Portsmouth just a short distance down Court Street from the home of his grandfather, Thomas D. Bailey. Most of his youth was spent elsewhere, first in the South where his father had business, and later in New York City where he reached manhood. Between these two periods, Aldrich returned to Portsmouth to live for several years, from 1849 to 1852, with his grandfather in this house facing Court Street. This was a formative time for Tom, a time he later remembered vividly in his The Story of a Bad Boy . Upon his death in 1907, the house became the Thomas Bailey Aldrich Memorial. Aldrich's first success came at the age of nineteen with the publication of a sentimental poem, "The Ballad of Babie Bell", in New York in 1855. He was soon accepted into the city's literary and artistic circles not only on the basis of his talent, but also because of his engaging personality and wit. One lifetime friendship to emerge from this period was that with Edwin Booth, the actor. It was Aldrich, more than any other, who stood by Booth during his ordeal of vicious threats and cruel remarks following the assassination of President Lincoln by the actor's brother. Thomas Bailey Aldrich married Lilian Woodman in 1865, and they moved to Boston the same year. Aldrich quickly attained the friendship of such notables as William Dean Howells, Mark Twain, James T. Fields (another Portsmouth son), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and James Russell Lowell. He was recognized as a man of ability and accomplishment, and in time he succeeded Howells as editor of the
