A to B C to E F to I J to L M to O P to R S to T U to Z Louisa May Alcott Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, on 29 November 1832 Died in Boston, Massachusetts, 6 March 1888 Page 1 Important Works: Hospital Sketches Little Women Little Men Jo's Boys and How They Turned Out Themes of Work: Alcott wrote about her experiences of family life in 19th century America. She deliberately wrote in clear, simple language which greatly appealed to readers at the time. In the 100 years since her death, literary academics have both praised her writing for its clever characterisations and detailed observations of 19th-century life and condemned it as simplistic, juvenile and even immoral. Alcott's most important book, Little Women , tells the story of four teenage sisters growing up in Massachusetts in the early 1860s during the American Civil War. Alcott drew on her own experiences to tell the story of the sisters: Meg, who dreams of being rich, aspiring author Jo, the home-loving Beth and vain Amy, who wants to be an artist. Despite difficult circumstances - their father’s absence as a soldier in the American Civil War and the family’s poverty - the four sisters create their own gaiety, drawing their rich young neighbour into their adventures. As the sisters develop as individuals they face adversity and loss and through their experiences learn to become "little women".

(from Louisa May Alcott, Her Life Letters, and Journals Louisa May Alcott was born in Germantown (now part of Philadelphia) as the second of four daughters of Abigail May Alcott and Bronson Alcott (1799-1888). During Alcott's childhood the family moved to Boston. She spent most of her life in the Boston-Concord area, and received almost all her early education from her father. His favorite moral guide was Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress . Bronson was member of the New England Transcendentalists. He was an idealistic, if impractical person, who believed in the spiritual life, as contrasted with the material life. Louisa May called him "the modern Plato". When a visiting English author criticized his teaching methods, he moved with his family to Concord. Among the family friends were Theodore Parker

Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) Almost everyone has heard of Louisa May Alcott's books, Little Women and Little Men . Although Alcott was a prolific writer with various pseudonyms, "Josiah Allen's Wife" was not one of them. SORRY, WRONG ANSWER! Trivia Quiz Home
Alcott, Louisa May. Hospital Sketches Applewood Books. 18 North Road. Bedford MA.01730. 1993. Saxton, Martha. Louisa May: A Modern Biography of Louisa May Alcott. Houghton Mifflin Co. Boston. 1977."Louisa May Alcott's story of the March family is really the story of the Alcotts - and the truth is far different from the author's often syrupy fantasy. Her father, Bronson, let his wife and daughters suffer while he philosophized. He did not believe in working for wages but he was perfectly willing to have his wife and daughters do it for him. It was Louisa's pen that would eventually save them all from starvation, but at great cost to her own health and happiness. Outwardly a self sacrificing, if slightly eccentric, New England spinster, Louisa May Alcott led a rich inner life that enabled her to deal with her father's indifference and to create, under a pseudonym, heroines who smoked hashish and exacted vengeance against uncaring males" dust jacket. Alcott, Louisa M.
