UNTITLED by Andrew Penland M.L. 'Max' Roth I
Born of this garden Forgetful Dropped upon our earth Only a wet sack whose water broke The insane passion of a slow smoky dance What box step my beginning and end All the value of a saxophone climax A gob of spit, and then. First we are abused Blinded in the womb to work and worth Building blocks thrown, grit in our eyes Buggered between the sheets before pubic hair STANZA CONTINUED: No skeleton to hang what hat And you from every street corner Behind hidden fences You from the backs of alleys Hocking in our eye hoping In your infinite love that we will see the light The blossoming of some great calla lily.

I have my degree in Library Tech. and am a former critic for Canadian Content magazine!

add invective for Stephen Cain
Beethoven's Sonatas in the Phallic Key share more in common with his later work than with the era in which they were composed. Phallic winters prove the bitterest. The lamentations of the bereaved mothers could only be described as phallic. The critical assessment of Gertrude Stein's work after the rise of "ecriture feminine" has been plagued by an overemphasis on the details of her phallic life. nhennessy@uwaterloo.ca

Five in the morning says to most of us "roll over and go back to sleep;" it's like the borders of the world begin at six or six-thirty, or whenever most people go out to warm up the car. Beyond those borders is a nether world, home only to sanitation workers and insomniacs. Even the early morning television news doesn't start until 5:30, and the really popular morning programs like Today aren't on until 7, well after sun up. But there is a real world on the move while most folks are buried deep under blankets. It's a place quite different from the Hartford you live and work in. Sure, the landscape is the same, but the people at work before dawn have a totally different way of looking at the workday and the city. It's like there's a separate culture for those people who are in full swing hours before most alarm clocks crackle to life. One of the voices inside some alarm clocks is Connecticut Public Radio morning host John Dankosky, the local voice of National Public Radio in the Hartford area. From 6 to 9, Dankosky relays news, weather and traffic to bleary-eyed commuters around the state. "I'm kind of a morning person," says Dankosky, who has been at CPR for over four years. But being a radio host isn't exactly the ideal job for a morning guy. "I like to see a little bit of sunlight out, hear the birds, see the frost, watch the

A HAND TOO LARGE FOR MATCHING Averil Bones A hand too large for matching marks my wall. Its padding is too wide, digits too tall. Its presence brings forth echoes of the night, so details in your handprint sound delight. A SILENT POOL Averil Bones A silent pool lies drifting, stilled by stars' reflections and shimmered times by wind. ***** It draws me in 'til gasping fills my liquid skin, and, growing gills from lungs, I swim. - BLACK SNAKE Averil Bones Black snake whip cracked by rubber blends grey on black bitumen's slate. And the shivery rustle of his snake's scales scutters up my leg from poking toe. Now, the snake is gone, ascended on witherings of angel down, and I can only pray that in heaven the roads are far from hungry for the taste of black snake's bite. =================================== WHAT WE MEAN BY "NOTHING" by
