Pope praised him and he was eventually appointed one of the physicians to the Queen. "The Pleasures of Imagination" (included within this collection) secured his fame and indirectly his wealth. The English Philosophical Poem: Neoclassicism to Romanticism
    T 103, 515-4163
    Course Description
Between 1680 and 1820 some of the finest examples of English verse by Dryden, Pope, Wordsworth, Shelley and others together constitute a challenge to traditional boundaries between the Neoclassical and Romantic literary periods, and between the disciplines of literature and philosophy. Throughout this period poets felt authorized and often compelled to combine metaphysical, ethical, and epistemological issues into a form known as the philosophical poem. By reading a range of better and lesser known works from this period, the class will focus on the characteristics of this form of poetry and whether the philosophical poem constitutes a genre. We will consider what the philosophical poem's formal verse features were , what cultural circumstances made this kind of poem possible, how and why it changed, and what happened to it.
    Goals:
    • -to introduce you to a tradition in which poetry was considered essential to critical thinking about one's self and the world.

    Amoret
    IF rightly tuneful bards decide,
That Beauty ought not to be tried
What fair can Amoret excel? Behold that bright unsullied smile,
We naught but instant gladness know,
Nor think to whom the gift we owe. But neither music, nor the powers
Add half the sunshine to the hours,
As memory brings it to the eye
From scenes where Amoret was by.
This shall enchant the subject heart
And she be still, in spite of Time,
Sweet Amoret in all her prime.
    The Complaint
Away! nor hope my riper age to move. Or placed thy friends above her stern decrees?
    The Nightingale
TO-NIGHT retired, the queen of heaven And now to Hesper it is given Awhile to rule the vacant sky, Till she shall to her lamp supply Propitious send thy golden ray, Let no false flame seduce to stray Where gulf or steep lie hid for harm; To them, by many a grateful song Nor seldom, where the beechen boughs We came, while her enchanting Muse The radiant moon above us held: But hark! I hear her liquid tone! Through yon wild thicket next the plain, Whose hawthorns choke the winding lane See the green space: on either hand See, in the midst she takes her stand
