British physician, classicist, and poet, one of the minor members of the Graveyard School , Akenside is best known for The Pleasures of Imagination , published in 1744. The poem was immensely popular, almost immediately going into a series of reprintings that would continue for a century and half. (The work was popular enough that Tobias Smollet would satirize Akenside in The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle .) In the mid-1750s Akenside began (but did not complete) a revision of the poem, retitled The Pleasures of the Imagination

Amoret
IF rightly tuneful bards decide,
That Beauty ought not to be tried
But by its native power to please,
What fair can Amoret excel? Behold that bright unsullied smile,
And wisdom speaking in her mien:
We naught but instant gladness know,
Nor think to whom the gift we owe. But neither music, nor the powers
Of youth and mirth and frolic cheer,
Add half the sunshine to the hours,
As memory brings it to the eye
From scenes where Amoret was by. This gives the most unbounded sway; This shall enchant the subject heart When rose and lily fade away; And she be still, in spite of Time, Sweet Amoret in all her prime.
The Complaint
AWAY! away! Tempt me no more, insidious Love; Thy soothing sway Long did my youthful bosom prove: Away! nor hope my riper age to move. I know, I see Her merit. Needs it now be shown, Alas! to me? How often, to myself unknown, The graceful, gentle, virtuous maid But, flattering god

Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies MARK AKENSIDE (1721 - 1770) The Newcastle poet-physician was born at 33 Butcher Bank (now Akenside Hill). He trained in Edinburgh and abroad and eventually rose to be physician to the queen at the accession of George III in 1763. Akenside actually had one leg shorter than the other, so the story about his being injured by his butcher father's cleaver was no doubt just a taunt about his humble origins. He was very touchy about this and, possibly as a result, he gained the reputation of behaving roughly to the poor, especially to women. He would tour the wards in his London hospital wearing a full-bottomed wig and clanking sword, while an escort of attendants kept the patients at a suitable distance. He was not an easy man to like, despite being ready to praise other poets. He had annoyed the testy Scots novelist Tobias Smollett (q.v.) by disparaging Scotland. He was consequently satirised as the conceited and pedantic Doctor in Peregrine Pickle In Newcastle, Akenside wrote a number of minor poems for the

After one winter as a theology student, he changed to medicine. He repaid the money that had been advanced for his theological studies, and became a deist. His politics, said Dr Johnson , were characterized by an "impetuous eagerness to subvert and confound, with very little care what shall be established," and he is caricatured in the republican doctor of Smollett's Peregrine Pickle . He was elected a member of the Medical Society of Edinburgh in 1740. His ambitions already lay outside his profession, and his gifts as a speaker made him hope one day to enter parliament. In 1740 he printed his "Ode on the Winter Solstice" in a small volume of poems. In 1741 he left Edinburgh for Newcastle and began to call himself surgeon, though it is doubtful whether he practised, and from the next year dates his life-long friendship with Jeremiah Dyson (1722-1776). During a visit to Morpeth in 1738 he had conceived the idea of his didactic poem, "The Pleasures of the Imagination." He had already acquired a considerable literary reputation when he came to London about the end of 1743. and offered the work to
