AESCHYLUS
Listen to the sad story of mankind:
At first mindless, I gave them mind and reason.
Not in disparagement of men do I speak.
But to show my gifts were governed by good will.
For seeing, they saw not; hearing, they could not listen.
All their lives they passed like shapes in dreams,
Confused and devoid of purpose. . . .
They acted without knowledge, till I came. . . .
Number, chief of sciences, I invented for them,
And how to set down words in writing,
The skill of remembrance, mother of the Muses. . . . I distinguished the divers modes of prophecy, And was the first to discern from dreams What Fate ordains should come to be. I gave the hidden sense of voices, Sounds, sights met by chance upon the road. I guided mankind to a hidden art, And read to them the intimations of the altar-flames. Prometheus Bound
AESCHYLUS During the prolonged struggle with Persia from 490 to 479 B.C., Aeschylus fought in the battles of Marathon, Artemisium, Salamis and Plataea. At Marathon he saw his brother Cynaegirus killed in an act of bravery. The brothers fought nobly enough to be memorialized by inclusion in the picture of Marathon in the Painted Porch (Stoa). Whilst no one knows when Aeschylus turned his penetrating intellect to poetic expression, he must have been relatively young, for he first competed for the prize in the Athenian drama festival of 499 B.C. at the age of twenty-six. His first recorded victory occurred in 484 B.C., and between that time and his last cycle of plays, performed in 458 B.C., he won the prize more than twelve times. According to Suidas, Aeschylus wrote ninety plays, of which titles and fragments of over eighty survive. Nonetheless, only seven complete plays remain as a testimony to his exceptional genius.

The following outline details the key learning objectives for each section of this chapter.
Aeschylus's Drama of Crime and Redemption
After studying this section of the chapter you should be able to
    • explain how, in his treatment of Agamemnon's murder by his wife, Aeschylus turns a domestic tragedy into a "cosmic event." discuss the theme of evolutionary change, both mortal and divine, in Aeshcylus's plays. explain how Aeschylus uses the ancient myth of Agamemnon's doomed house to comment on Athenian democracy.
An Overview After studying this section of the chapter you should be able to
    • explain how the Oresteia defies (albeit 100 years before they were conceived) the rules of space and time set down in Aristotle's Poetics explain how issues of blood vengeance and filial duty become, in the Oresteia , matters of civic law and religious ethics. describe the role of the chorus in each of the Oresteia's three plays.

    AESCHYLUS
AESCHYLUS (525-456 B.C.), Greek poet, the first of the only three Attic Tragedians of whose work entire plays survive, and in a very real sense (as we shall see) the founder of the Greek drama, was born at Eleusis in the year 525 B.C. His father, Euphorion, belonged to the " Eupatridae " or old nobility of Athens, as we know on the authority of the short Life of the poet given in the Medicean Manuscript (see note on "authorities" at the end). According to the same tradition he took part as a soldier in the great struggle of Greece against Persia; and was present at the battles of Marathon, Artemisium, Salamis and Plataea, in the years 490-479. At least one of his brothers, Cynaegirus, fought with him at Marathon, and was killed in attempting a conspicuous act of bravery; and the brothers' portraits found a place in the national picture of the battle which the Athenians set up as a memorial in the Stoa Poecile (or "Pictured Porch") at Athens. The vigour and loftiness of tone which mark Aeschylus' poetic work was not only due, we may be sure, to his native genius and gifts, powerful as they were, but were partly inspired by the personal share he took in the great actions of a heroic national uprising. In the same way, the poet's brooding thoughtfulness on deep questionsthe power of the gods, their dealings with man, the dark mysteries of fate, the future life in Hadesthough largely due to his turn of mind and temperament, was doubtless connected with the place where his childhood was passed. Eleusis was the centre of the most famous worship of Demeter, with its processions, its ceremonies, its mysteries, its impressive spectacles and nocturnal rites; and these were intimately connected with the Greek beliefs about the human soul, and the underworld.

    translated by Robert Potter
The electronic text version of this translation comes from the Eris Project at Virginia Tech, which has made it available for public use. The hypertext version presented here has been designed for students of Ancient History at the University of Calgary. I have added line numbers (to facilitate specific citation or to find a specific passage from a citation; note: the line numbers of a Greek text do not always fit as smoothly as one might like into a translation) and made occasional minor modifications, generally following the line ascriptions of more recent scholars; in the final discussion between Xerxes and the chorus, I have followed Potter's assemblage into two speeches, rather than attempt the almost impossible task of adapting his translation into the interplay between the two parties. Another HTML version of the complete text, with no numeration if you prefer this, is available at the Internet Classics Archive from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. J. Vanderspoel, Department of Greek, Latin and Ancient History, University of Calgary
