The George Ade Collection - a description George Ade (1866-1944). George Ade was born in Kentland, Indiana, and graduated from Purdue University in 1887, where he displayed interest in the literary field. He did journalistic work in Lafayette, Indiana, until 1890, when he moved to Chicago and started work on the Chicago Daily News (which was later renamed The Chicago News Record , then The Chicago Record ). He was a prolific writer and often collaborated with college classmate John T. McCutcheon , the renowned cartoonist. While working for The Chicago Record , his foible-laden character sketches on Artie Pink Marsh (1897), and Doc Horne (1899) began to appear, which included sketches by John T. McCutcheon. Ade wrote his first successful play, The Sultan of Sulu , in 1902; he later went on to write

INDIANA'S POPULAR HISTORY :: george ade George Ade: The Aesop of Indiana Born in Kentland, Indiana, George Ade was the second youngest of seven children raised by John and Adaline (Bush) Ade. Lacking enthusiasm for manual labor, especially farming, the young Ade could usually be found with his nose buried in a book. An 1887 graduate of Purdue University, where he met and started a lifelong friendship with Hoosier cartoonist John T. McCutcheon, Ade worked as a reporter for the Lafayette Call and also wrote testimonials for a patent medicine company's tobacco-habit cure.
ADE AND THE CHICAGO RECORD In 1890 Ade joined McCutcheon on the staff of the Chicago Morning News, which later became the Chicago Record. After proving his worth as a reporter, Ade was put in charge of the column, "Stories of the Streets and of the Town,"

Ade, George (1866-1944)
American author and dramatist, born in Kentland, Indiana. His work includes examples of a modern form of fable. After graduating from Purdue University in Lafayette in 1887, Ade worked as a reporter for a newspaper, The Lafayette Call, for three years. He then transferred to Chicago, where he continued his newspaper career on the Chicago Record from 1890 to 1900. After 1893 he conducted a story column for this paper, and he derived three of his early books from the column, Artie (1896), Pink Marsh (1897), and Doc Horne (1899). His Fables in Slang (1900) and its several sequels were modelled on the fables of the ancient Greek writer Aesop. In 1900 Ade retired from the newspaper and travelled in Asia. His experiences on this trip inspired his operetta, The Sultan of Sulu (1902). He continued his career writing for the theatre with The County Chairman (1903), a satire on local politics, and The College Widow (1904). Ade's other works include The Girl Proposition (1902), People You Knew (1903), Breaking Into Society (1903), Father and the Boys (1907), Knocking the Neighbors (1912), and The Old-Time Saloon (1931). He also worked in films and in 1922 wrote the stories for Back Home and Broke and Our Leading Citizen. Back A B C ...

George Ade, "Vehicles Out of the Ordinary," in Franklin J. Meine, Stories of the Streets and of the Town: The Chicago Record 1893-1900 (Chicago: Caxton Club, 1941); 87-91. ANY one who keeps his eyes open can find a number of strange vehicles in Chicago, but he must go out into the districts where the people live, and not confine his observations to the down-town district. In the crowded business streets the trucks, delivery wagons and hansom cabs are about the only types to be seen. At a corner in the southwestern part of the city the evangelist's wagon was drawn up alongside the board walk and a small crowd had collected to listen to the music and read the inscriptions. The vehicle was something like a fancy farm wagon with a canopy top to it, except that the side-boards were not so high. It was drawn by two horses, and the driver sat in a broad seat at the front. Behind him was [end page 87] the organ, which was built as a part of the wagon, being joined to the floor and the sideboards. The scriptural quotations were painted on red cloth curtains concealing the back part of the wagon, where there were two or three chairs. When the curtains were removed and the canopy moved out of the way the back part of the wagon became a rostrum, or pulpit. The man at the organ played some introductory chords and sang a hymn in a robust voice loud enough for out-door use, and the evangelist made an exhortation.
