Joseph Addison, Material Sublimity, and the Aesthetics of Bigness
George P. Landow, Professor of English and Art History, Brown University
Although Dennis was perhaps the most original theorist of the sublime in the first half of the eighteenth century, Joseph Addison had far more influence upon his contemporaries. In a well known passage in Spectator 412 (1712), Addison defines his notion of greatness, lists the usual sources of natural sublimity, and explains the psychological mechanism of the aesthetic reaction to sublimity: By greatness I do not only mean the bulk of any single object but the largeness of a whole view considered as one entire piece. Such are the prospects of an open champaign country, a vast uncultivated desert , of huge heaps of mountains , high rocks and precipices, or a wide expanse of waters, where we are not struck with the novelty or beauty of the sight but with that rude kind of magnificence which appears in many of these stupendous works of nature. Our imagination loves to be filled with an object, or to grasp at anything that is too big for its capacity. We are flung into a pleasing astonishment at such unbounded views, and feel a delightful stillness and amazement in the soul at the apprehension of them. Addison here makes several points that continued to be important in later writings on the sublime. First, he states that in some way the sublime requires a unified magnificence. Second, he cites the usual mountains, deserts, and seas as the most sublime parts of external nature. And, lastly, he analyzes the sublime reaction or effect in terms of a pleasure caused by attempting to fill the mind by "too big" an object. Johnson

CLARK, JOSEPH ADDISON (1815-1901). Joseph Addison Clark, preacher, journalist, and teacher, was born on November 6, 1815, in Shawneetown, Illinois, and named Zachariah by his parents, Thomas Dyson and Jane (Cunningham) Clark. He spent his childhood near Columbia and Clarksville, Tennessee. At twelve he assumed responsibility for his mother and two younger sisters when his father murdered a man in New Orleans and fled. His father was thought to have drowned in a shipwreck, but he survived and went to Texas, where he served in the Texas army after the Texas Revolution. qv Clark and his father were reunited briefly in 1840. In 1826 the family moved to Alabama to be near Jane Clark's brother. During this time Clark managed to educate himself and took the name Joseph Addison because he admired the works of the British writer of the same name. Clark moved to Texas with his sisters and mother in 1839. His mother died soon after the family landed at Matagorda. Clark and his sister Mary settled briefly in Austin, where he worked as a printer on the earlier Austin Texas Sentinel qv Delayed while attempting to return to Kentucky in 1841, Clark worked as a surveyor in East Texas. There he met Esther (Hetty) DeSpain, and they were married in 1842. They moved to Titus County because of the Regulator-Moderator War.

Advertisements are of great use to the vulgar. First of all, as they are instruments of ambition. A man that is by no means big enough for the Gazette, may easily creep into the advertisements; by which means we often see an apothecary in the same paper of news with a plenipotentiary, or a running footman with an ambassador. - in the "Tatler", no. 224 [ Journalism Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation, as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn.
