Joseph Addison
Profile
Poet and essayist. He was born in Wiltshire and lived in Lichfield from the age of eleven, in 1683, when his father became the Dean of Lichfield. He was educated at the local Grammar school before going to Charterhouse then Queen's and Magdalen Colleges, Oxford, where he studied classics. At Charterhouse he was to make a friend of Richard Steele, who was later to become the founder of The tatler Addison set his sights on a diplomatic career and travelled widely. He secured the post of Commissioner of Excise in 1705 through his political contacts and by especially writing a poem, The campaign (1704), which celebrated the triumph of the Battle of Blenheim. Three years later he became a Member of Parliament, a position he was to retain for the rest of his life. From 1713 he lived at Bilton Hall, in the village of Bilton , then just outside Rugby. Through his many political and literary acquaintances he published a range of his work in various periodicals including The tatler The spectator and The guardian . His blank-verse tragedy Cato was produced in 1713 and was a great success through its pertinent political comment. It was described as "rather a poem in dialogue than a drama" by

Addison, Joseph.
The Works of the Right Honourable Joseph Addison, Esq.
Volume 2
London, 1721 In the Tuesday, March 6, 1711, Spectator , Addison rails at the absurdities of Italian opera, singling out for ridicule the staging in Handel's Rinaldo . In particular, he makes light of the unleashing of sparrows in one of the opera scenes in order to enhance the setting depicting a delightful grove of trees. He asks why the birds had to be real when, in the end, their music "proceeded from a consort of flageolets and Bird-calls" which came from behind the scenes. "A little skill in criticism," Addison writes, "would inform us, that shadows and realities ought not to be mixed together in the same piece; and that the scenes which are designed as the representations of nature, should be filled with resemblances, and not with things themselves." Later in the essay Addison warns that freeing birds in the opera house may not be considered such a pleasant spectacle when they cause "inconveniences" to the heads of those in the audience. Addison, Joseph.
The Works of the Right Honourable Joseph Addison, Esq.
Volume 1
London, 1721 In Tickell's three-volume work, the first to present a collected edition of Addison's writings, we find a libretto for an opera entitled Rosamond . Addison wrote the text in 1707. During the early 1700's English opera had no one to give it musical direction in the way Henry Purcell (c.1659-1695) had done in the previous decades. Italian opera began to dominate. Thomas Clayton (c.1670-c.1730), the supposed successor to Purcell, actually helped to establish the Italian taste in the English theater. In 1706 he cooperated in the successful performance of , an English libretto written by Peter Motteux; Clayton prepared the music for the text by reworking arias he had brought from Italy. Recognizing the declining state of the English musical theater, Addison himself decided to write a libretto for an opera. Unfortunately he asked Clayton to compose the music for his words. The piece met with utter failure, for, when left to his own ingenuity, Clayton as a composer was hardly a successor to Purcell. Introduction Next Page Grace Doherty Library

Works of Joseph Addison, 1761 - In Full Red Morocco [Baskerville] Addison, Joseph
WORKS OF THE LATE RIGHT HONOURABLE JOSEPH ADDISON, edited by Thomas Tickell London John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson 1761 4 volumes. First Baskerville edition. Engraved portrait frontispiece after Kneller, 3 full page engravings by Grignion after Hayman, 13 leaves with woodcuts of coins. 4to, contemporary red morocco, expertly and sympathetically rebacked, decorated with fine gilt rolled borders on covers, black lettering pieces and gilt tooled designs on the spines between raised bands. A fine set, clean throughout. John Baskerville is generally regarded as the first "fine" English printer: he is credited with bringing the typography of the Isles up to a par with that of the continent. The beauty of his editions is frequently attributed as much to the quality of his papers and ink, but the excellence of his type cannot be denied. Dibdin says, "He united in a singularly happy manner the elegance of Plantin with the clearness of the Elzevirs..." (Introd. to the Classics).
This edition of Addison ranks among his finest productions. "A glorious performance," according to Dibdin and one of the finest productions of the Baskerville Press.

Joseph Addison La Campagne The Tatler The Spectator Caton The Spectator Ode
    The spacious firmament on high
With all the blue ethereal sky,
And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
    Their great Original proclaim.
The unwearied sun from day to day
    Does his Creator's power display,
    And publishes in every land
The work of an almighty hand.
Soon as the evening shades prevail,
The moon takes up the wondrous tale,
And nightly to the listening earth Repeats the story of her birth ; Whilst all the stars that round her burn, And all the planets in their turn, Confirm the tidings as they roll, And spread the truth from pole to pole. What though in solemn silence, all Move round this dark terrestrial ball ? What though nor real voice nor sound Amidst their radiant orbs be found ? In Reason's ear they all rejoice, And utter forth a glorious voice, Forever singing as they shine : "The hand that made us is divine !" Joseph Addison, The Spectator

Several of these hymns have come into common use, but her masterpiece is the one found in this book: Nearer, my God, to thee Addison, Joseph , whose fame is coextensive with English literature, was the son of Rev.
