Washington, November 7th. -Cabinet meeting at the President's from halfpast one till four. Mr. Calhoun, Secretary of War, and Mr. Southard, Secretary of the Navy, present. The subject for consideration was, the confidential proposals of the British Secretary of State, George Canning, to R. Rush, and the correspondence between them relating to the projects of the Holy Alliance upon South America. There was much conversation, without coming to any definite point. The object of Canning appears to have been to obtain some public pledge from the Government of the United States, ostensibly against the forcible interference of the Holy Alliance between Spain and South America; but really or especially against the acquisition to the United States themselves of any part of the Spanish American possessions. Mr. Calhoun inclined to giving a discretionary power to Mr. Rush to join in a declaration against the interference of the Holy Allies, if necessary, even if it should pledge us not to take Cuba or the province of Texas; because the power of Great Britain being greater than ours to seize upon them, we should get the advantage of obtaining from her the same declaration we should make ourselves.

Adams, John Quincy
Adams, John Quincy, (b. July 11, 1767, Braintree, Mass.d. Feb. 23, 1848, Washington, D.C.), eldest son of Pres. John Adams and sixth president of the United States (1825-29). In his pre-presidential years he was one of America's greatest diplomats (formulating, among other things, what came to be called the Monroe Doctrine); in his post-presidential years (as U.S. congressman, 1831-48) he conducted a consistent and often dramatic fight against the expansion of slavery
Early life and career.
George Washington's administration as it faced the war that broke out between France and England in 1793. These articles were brought to President Washington's attention and resulted in Adams' appointment as U.S. minister to the Netherlands in May 1794. John Adams , became president and changed the young diplomat's destination to Prussia. John Quincy Adams was married in London in 1797, on the eve of his departure for Berlin, to Louisa Catherine Johnson (1775-1852), daughter of the United States consul Joshua Johnson, a Marylander by birth, and his wife, Katherine Nuth, an Englishwoman.

Adams, John Quincy Adams, John Quincy, Adams and Abigail Adams and father of Charles Francis Adams Dana In 1803 he became a U.S. senator as a Federalist, but his independence led him to approve Jeffersonian policies in the Louisiana Purchase and in the Embargo Act of 1807 ; the Federalists were outraged, and he resigned (1808). Sent as minister to Russia in 1809, he was well received, but the Napoleonic wars eclipsed Russian-American relations. He then helped to draw up the Treaty of Ghent Monroe Doctrine In 1824 Adams was a candidate for the U.S. presidency. Neither he, nor Andrew Jackson , nor Henry Clay received a majority in the electoral college, and the election was decided in the House of Representatives. There Clay supported Adams, making him president. Adams appointed Clay secretary of state, over the Jacksonians' cry that the appointment fulfilled a corrupt bargain. With little popular support and without a party, Adams had an unhappy, ineffective administration, despite his attempts to institute a broad program of internal improvements. Cold and introspective, Adams was not generally popular, but he was respected for his high-mindedness and knowledge. His interest in science led him to promote the

. He negotiated the Treaty of Ghent (1814) to end the War of 1812 Monroe Doctrine in 1823. As president, Adams was a Federalist (an advocate of strong federal government), but was ultimately unable to accomplish many of his policies because of power struggles within his own Democratic-Republican party. American System abominable tariffs imposed during his presidency, levies on foreign imports of raw materials that protected US agricultural interests but raised the prices of US manufactured goods. In 1831 Adams was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served until his death. He was especially known after 1835 for his abolitionist views, his vigorous speeches against slavery earning him the nickname

ADAMS, John Quincy jr. [1833-1894] American statesman
Relationship Cousin
ADAMS family ODT Contents: He was graduated from Harvard college in 1853, and two years later was admitted to the Suffolk county bar. He followed his profession for a short time, then, becoming interested in agriculture, he created a model farm of five hundred acres at Quincy, Mass. He served on Governor Andrew's staff during the civil war, and sat in the state legislature in 1866 as representative for Quincy. He was originally an advocate of "Free Soil," and a vigorous supporter of the war policy of President Lincoln, but changed on "reconstruction" to President Johnson's policy, which resulted in his withdrawal from the Republican party, and prevented his re-election in the ensuing year. He was nominated by the Democrats for governor of Massachusetts in 1868, 1869, and 1870, but was not elected, and again served in the legislature in 1869 and 1870 as a Democrat.

The Diary of John Quincy Adams John Quincy Adams kept a meticulous diary all of his adult life. It is an exceptionally rich source: for each day, he filled precisely one large page with his close, crabbed handwriting. He recorded in detail what he did, whom he saw, what he was reading, what political developments interested or involved him even, on Sundays, what sermon he had heard. The manuscript diary is held as part of the Adams Family Papers, in the Massachusetts Historical Society, in Boston, Massachusetts. (A microfilm edition is available in many larger research libraries.) Excerpts from the diary were published as the Memoirs of John Quincy Adams , edited by Charles Francis Adams. The Exploring Amistad Library includes both transcriptions and images of a string of diary entries in which Adams worked or commented in some way on the Amistad case. Not every day is included, but on those days the library does include, the entire diary entry is presented. Some key diary entries November 17, 1840 : After meeting with Baldwin to discuss trial tactics, Adams visits the Amistad Africans in jail. (This meeting with Cinque and the others is quite different than the scene written for the Spielberg movie.)

    The following is a speech delivered to the Schiller Institute/International Caucus of Labor Committees Sept. 5-6 conference near Washington, D.C. Let us:
    • look at the development of the independent United States of America as a great power, through the life of John Quincy Adams;
    • understand the universal mission of the country as this classically educated man came to express and carry out that mission;
    • see why America insisted on national sovereignty, against any foreign control, and how we applied our sovereign powers to industrialize, and to create a unified, continent-wide nation;
    • recognize how we spread our mission of nation-building, and resistance to British imperial tyranny, from here to other continents;
    • and see how John Quincy Adams's accomplishments prepared the way for Abraham Lincoln's victories, and the triumph of the American System.

    PREFACE.
    The facts attending the abduction of Morgan, not elicited without the most extraordinary difficulty by subsequent investigation, have been so often published far and wide as to make it superfluous here to repeat them. It may be enough to state, that from the day when the partnership between Morgan and David C. Miller, a printer of Batavia, made for the purpose of publishing the "Illustrations of Masonry," was announced, no form of annoyance which could be expected to deter them from prosecuting their design, was left unattempted. The precise nature of these forms may be better understood, if we class them under general heads, until they took the ultimate shape of aggravated crime. 1. Anonymous denunciation of the man Morgan, as an impostor, in newspapers published at Canandaigua, Batavia and Black Rock, places at some distance from each other, but all within the limits of the region in which the subsequent acts of violence were committed. 2. Abuse of the forms of law, by the hunting up of small debts or civil offenses with which to carry on vexatious suits or prosecutions against the two persons heretofore named.

    And now, friends and countrymen, if the wise and learned philosophers of the elder world, the first observers of nutation and aberration, the discoverers of maddening ether and invisible planets, the inventors of Congreve rockets and Shrapnel shells, should find their hearts disposed to enquire what has America done for the benefit of mankind? Let our answer be this: America, with the same voice which spoke herself into existence as a nation, proclaimed to mankind the inextinguishable rights of human nature, and the only lawful foundations of government. America, in the assembly of nations, since her admission among them, has invariably, though often fruitlessly, held forth to them the hand of honest friendship, of equal freedom, of generous reciprocity. She has uniformly spoken among them, though often to heedless and often to disdainful ears, the language of equal liberty, of equal justice, and of equal rights.
