Thou silent herald of Time's silent flight!
Say, could'st thou speak, what warning voice were thine?
Shade, who canst only show how others shine!
Dark, sullen witness of resplendent light
In day's broad glare, and when the noontide bright
Of laughing fortune sheds the ray divine,
Thy ready favors cheer usbut decline
The clouds of morning and the gloom of night.
      Yet are thy counsels faithful, just, and wise;
They bid us seize the moments as they pass
Snatch the retrieveless sunbeam as it flies,
Nor lose one sand of life's revolving glass
      Aspiring still, with energy sublime,
By virtuous deeds to give eternity to Time.

And were each wish a mint of gold,
I still should long for more.

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS 6th President of the United States John Quincy Adams was the son of President John Adams , served as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and was Secretary of State under President Monroe . In the presidential election of 1824, no one candidate received a majority of electoral votes and the election was decided in Adams' favor by Congress. The election of 1828 was the first in which the candidates were chosen by state legislatures instead of congressional caucuses, making the popular vote more of a factor. Adams lost by a wide margin to the Democrat from the south, Andrew Jackson . Although he served only one term as president, in 1830 Adams was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served for the remaining 17 years of his life.

Inaugural Address of John Quincy Adams
FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 1825 In compliance with an usage coeval with the existence of our Federal Constitution , and sanctioned by the example of my predecessors in the career upon which I am about to enter, I appear, my fellow-citizens, in your presence and in that of Heaven to bind myself by the solemnities of religious obligation to the faithful performance of the duties allotted to me in the station to which I have been called. In unfolding to my countrymen the principles by which I shall be governed in the fulfillment of those duties my first resort will be to that Constitution In the compass of thirty-six years since this great national covenant was instituted a body of laws enacted under its authority and in conformity with its provisions has unfolded its powers and carried into practical operation its effective energies. Subordinate departments have distributed the executive functions in their various relations to foreign affairs, to the revenue and expenditures, and to the military force of the Union by land and sea. A coordinate department of the judiciary has expounded the Constitution and the laws, settling in harmonious coincidence with the legislative will numerous weighty questions of construction which the imperfection of human language had rendered unavoidable. The year of jubilee since the first formation of our Union has just elapsed that of the declaration of our independence is at hand. The consummation of both was effected by this

Delivered on February 24, and March 1, 1841.
  • ...I appear here on the behalf of thirty-six individuals, the life and liberty of every one of whom depend on the decision of this Court.... Three or four of them are female children, incapable, in the judgment of our laws, of the crime of murder or piracy, or, perhaps, of any other crime. Yet, from the day when the vessel was taken possession of by one of our naval officers, they have all been held as close prisoners, now for the period of eighteen long months.... The persons aforesaid, described as slaves, are Negroes and persons of color, who have been transported from Africa in violation of the laws of the United States.... The Court should enable the United States to send the Negroes home to Africa...in pursuance of the law of Congress passed March 3, 1829, entitled "An act in addition to the acts prohibiting the slave-trade."...

Library of Congress John Quincy Adams was the sixth President of the United States (1825-1829) and lifetime diarist. His father, John Adams , helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was the second President of the United States (1797-1801). John Quincy was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts in 1767. His early education, in mathematics, languages, and the classics, was by way of his father. He graduated from Harvard College in 1787 and studied law in Newburyport, Massachusetts under the tutelage of Theophilus Parsons . In 1790 he began the practice of law in Boston. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1802, served in various diplomatic posts and was President James Monroe's Secretary of State (1817-1825), in the opinion of many, one of the best to ever serve in that post. Adams was an abolitionist and opposed slavery in the newly admitted states. After completing his Presidency, Adams served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in 1848. John Quincy Adams

    Adams Documents
    (b. July 11, 1767, Braintree, Mass.d. Feb. 23, 1848, Washington, D.C.), eldest son of Pres. John Adams and sixth president of the United States (1825-29). In his pre-presidential years he was one of America's greatest diplomats (formulating, among other things, what came to be called the Monroe Doctrine); in his post-presidential years (as U.S. congressman, 1831-48) he conducted a consistent and often dramatic fight against the expansion of slavery.
    Early life and career.
In 1781, at the age of 14, he accompanied Francis Washington's administration as it faced the war that broke out between France and England in 1793. These articles were brought to President Washington's attention and resulted in Adams' appointment as U.S. minister to the Netherlands in May 1794. The Hague was then the best diplomatic listening post in Europe for the war of the first coalition against Revolutionary France. Young Adams' official dispatches to the Secretary of State and his informal letters to his father, who was now the vice president, kept the government well informed of the diplomatic activities and wars of the distressed Continent and the danger of becoming involved in the European vortex. These letters were also read by President Washington: some of Adams' phrases, in fact, appeared in Washington's "Farewell Address" of 1796. During the absence of the regular minister at London, Thomas Pinckney, Adams transacted public business with the British Foreign Office relating to exchange of ratifications of the Jay Treaty of 1794 between the United States and Great Britain. In 1796 Washington, who came to regard young Adams as the ablest officer in the foreign service, appointed him minister to Portugal, but before his departure his father, John
